Another constant was top-notch service - servers were affable, efficient, & knew the ins & outs of the menu & specials. Hole in the Wall is perfect place to go if you want to dine at a waterfront restaurant in Mathews county. It is also the only waterfront restaurant in Mathews county. Pluses are the variety of menu items, from seafood to hamburgers to soups to salads, with numerous appetizers, sides and desserts to whet your pallet. The staff is also friendly, while the vibe of Hole in the Wall is unique. Negatives are the prices can be a bit out of line with the quality of the food. Consistent quality will maybe never be one of Hole in the Wall's strengths. But even on a bad day, the food is always pretty good, if not great. You can eat indoors or outside on a large deck. When the weather is nice, it's hard to best eating on the deck while listening to and watching the wildlife go by, or people-watching the sounds of boats being launched or brought out of the water at the adjacent public boat landing. I recommend Hole in the Wall for the consistent waterfront dining experience. I would give Hole in the Wall five stars if only the food were as consistent. read more

Really disappointed with lunch today. We arrived around 3:30pm and happy there was no wait to eat outside. Wasn't particularly busy inside or out at this time. Lunch took about 25 minutes to come out. We ordered steamed shrimp, Grilled shrimp entree, crab cake sandwich, crab cake dinner entree, kids cheese pizza w/Mac & cheese and a kids drink - shark attack! Everything looked great but nothing was served hot. All the hot food was served cool - everything except the kids cheese pizza. Even the kids mac and cheese was cold. I did t finish all the steamed shrimp due to serving temp. They were not hot/warm like maybe they'd just been steamed, nor were they cold enough to enjoy as shrimp cocktail. I let our server know our food was not hot and he said he brought everything when it was placed in the window. He did apologize for the food temperature. Grandchild spilled her drink. I asked if we could have half a cup of soda and was informed there are no refills. I noticed when we received our check that a couple substitutions resulted in additional costs. The server did not mention any up charges; we usually never mind but always appreciate the heads up. So, $150 for a cold lunch today except for kids pizza who had nothing to wash it down with. Second time here in two years. We have family in the area. We visited last year this time. Decided to give it another visit this year as well. The staff are amazing. Friendly. Conversational. Prompt. The food was good as well. We had a lot to accommodate. Age ranges from 8 to 82. Everyone came away well fed and happy. The view is phenomenal as well. YAY! One of our favorite places is open again! This time, we had the Mexican street corn oysters and the daily grinder. Both absolutely delicious! We also split an order of pickled beets, some of the best I've had. The menu is small, but the servings are big, and I suggest you order off the daily specials...always good stuff there... And the waitstaff seems to always smile, so you just feel GOOD by the time you leave. And the views. If you're not hungry, just go for the view. And....their patio is dog friendly, BONUS!! read more

Hostess was great. She was new, but because the waitress' were 'too busy', she got us seated and took drink orders. She kept having to go in and out to get our questions answered, but she really tried. Ended up that the waitress we had knew absolutely nothing about beer and never was able to tell my husband exactly what IPA he had (brand yes, but which IPA-no). At first, she kept insisting that it was a brown. My burger was very good. Fries were very good too. We called ahead of time to see if they had outdoor seating (as we had our dog) and if it was covered (was super hot). They said yes and that there were fans. Fans outside in VA heat do nothing and we were seated in the sun. Only 2 tables can really be shaded. You can only see water from a couple of the tables and high tops. read more

Finding this place was such a catch! (Get it? ) I don't live in the area, but I don't think you cod do better than Hole in the Wall. Don't trout me and just go! I had the fried oysters, my partner had the grilled sea bass, and both were amazing! It's a lot of food with the sides, but the views over the water are fun--if you have a boat they also do boat-based takeaway--and everyone is socially distant at tables. Considering going somewhere else for lunch seems a bit fishy to me. This place is o-fish-ally a winter! I should dolphinitely scale back on the fish puns. read more

Great location by the water with fabulous views. Service is fast and friendly and there atmosphere is very casual. We both ordered specials, myself the crab and lobster mac and cheese which had a great flavor even though pasta was slightly overcooked and it came with a really nice side salad. My friend had the blackened shrimp and grits which he said was pretty good but not a lot of flavor. We ordered the breaded green beans with ranch dip as an appetizer which was tasty. I ordered the HITW island triple mojito which was also very tasty and my friend ordered a beer on tap, the waitress was great and let him sample a beer he was unsure about ordering. Review is mostly for wait staff. We had heard about this restaurant through Yelp and neighbors at the house we rented. We were really excited based on the menu we saw. The wait was about 30 minutes at dinner time. There are tables inside and outside so things moved pretty fast. We were seated inside. After that, I'm not sure I can accurately review the food. The reason why, the inside was freezing cold. Within a few minutes, my husband went out to get our jackets. Then he mentioned something to the server who said she had said something to the manager but they didn't do anything. She actually said she mentioned it earlier as well. I think the food was ok but we were so uncomfortable that it is hard to remember. I know it's hard to balance the temperature when you have the kitchen wide open, work staff and customers. The world will never know what inspired my friends to go to the butt crack of nowhere for spring break. Y'all ever heard of Gwynn's Island? We hadn't either. But wow, was the little Virginian island a welcome surprise -- lovely beaches, wide roads perfect for biking, (mostly) friendly residents who all recommended us to visit the same place: Hole in the Wall. Hole in the Wall is conveniently situated at the entrance of the island; you can't miss the big sign. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating; we attempted the latter until the winds got the better of us. There's a wooden plaque on the wall that reads: Bad decisions make the best stories. Very true. My friend and I split a shrimp basket with veggies (collard greens) and subbed-in onion rings. The serving size was alright for two -- it would have otherwise been a pricy meal for one. We opted for deep-fried shrimp at the suggestion of our waitress, which was nicely battered and paired with tartar and cocktail sauce. The sides were good, but not special. Hits the spot if you're ever in the mood for fat-infused seafood and an outlook over the ocean. read more

All signs pointed to my having found a hidden gem on Gwynn Island. Full parking lot, boats competing for spots at the dock to park and eat, a full deck of patrons. Boy was I wrong. Busy Sunday lunch visit. We were seated promptly and the waitress was very helpful and friendly answering questions about the menu. I ordered a small order of peel and eat shrimp for an appetizer for the table. They were large, well cooked and seasoned perfectly. Good start. An hour later when our entrees arrived, my opinion had shifted significantly. I passed on the Oyster platter when I was informed that market price was $32. I opted to buy a pint of oyster on the way home and cook my own. Below is a picture of my second choice - $25+ fried flounder entree. Even if the fish was even remotely edible, this is not platter worth $25. After my hour wait, I was disgusted to find that for the first time ever, I had to use a knife to cut a bite of fried fish. I don't know if my attached picture paints an accurate picture, but not only did my fish not flake, when I sliced a bite with my knife it was so dry it pulverized into almost a powdery consistency. They played about six tasty, but small, hush puppies. I was graciously ONE of the little plastic butter packages (the ones about the size of a pinky nail). I was not offered tartar sauce. This wasn't an issue for me because I don't like covering up the taste of a good piece of fish with sauces. But I had to ask the server for tartar just to be able to choke down the fish. I couldn't request a replacement because my guests had a 6 hour drive and I couldn't ask them to wait another hour for another piece of fish. Next time I'm visiting the middle peninsula I will skip the waterfront view and and have some edible seafood at Richardson's. Edit: the seating capacity of this establishment is too large to have a single restroom. I was thoroughly embarrassed when my one of my out of state guests was told if his restroom needs was urgent that he could use the second restroom - a port-a-john in the parking lot. read more

We thought about getting fish tacos but $18 for two with no sides? Nah. We got a salad with friend chicken. My husband added "crispy jalapeños" for an additional $1. Turns out they were jalapeño flavored chips. "Fresh greens" = iceberg lettuce. And "fried chicken" = cut up chicken tenders. $15. We also got the breaded fried shrimp basket. Shrimp was actually very good. Not overly breaded and perfectly cooked. Cocktail sauce resembled ketchup. However, with a side salad - $23. I knew the cost but there wasn't much more on the menu besides burgers. They were out of wings and oysters. Place has a nice vibe, tons of staff and in a nice setting on the water. We came here for the first time since the pandemic...and found a really nice relaxed waterfront atmosphere with excellent food, great service (thank you Brandi!) and a good variety of adult beverages. We went here with our family of four and two friends who are married since our research indicated the food was decent and the views of the water were great. When we entered the restaurant it was a small dining area. We got the big center table with a great view of the water. My 6 year old son got a cheeseburger and fries with Sprite. He loves cheeseburgers but said this burger was too chewy. We asked for it well done so that might have been on us but he did still eat most of the burger. My 10 year old daughter got chicken tenders with honey mustard and French fries and enjoyed it. She also got a lemonade which she said tasted horrible. Adding sugar did not help so she got water instead. My wife got the fireside burger and onion rings and enjoyed it. The Diet Coke she ordered tasted flat. I ordered the blackened shrimp tacos and they were good. I would like more shrimp and less cheese but they were good overall. Our friend got the fried catfish tacos and he agreed that less cheese and more meat would be great. Our friend's wife got a cheeseburger and French fries and enjoyed them. I ordered a Sly Clyde submersive cider and it was good. It was cool when I saw it came from my hometown of Hampton, VA. I let my friend try it and she liked it so she ordered one. I would have ordered another cider but I had to drive so I stopped at one. After we ate, my wife had a work meeting to call into so the rest of us checked out the boat parking and looked at the boats and the water. I recalled catching crabs on the pier poles as a kid and after looking at a couple of piers I spotted a decent size crab. I grabbed my net out of the car and with the kids watching, I caught that crab plus another small crab with it. After my son saw me do that, he wanted to try and although he didn't catch any of the other crabs we saw, he kept trying and got better with each attempt.
