Where do I start!!! When walking thru the front door, the strong smell of dog shit is the first indication that you should turn around! The lady at check-in was rude and uninviting. She sent us to our second floor room where we found the oldest furniture in Illinois! The edge of the bed digs into your legs. The rest of the bed was easily 100 years old and very uncomfortable. The tv turns on and off by itself! The thermostat doesn't work. The wall unit air was so loud, that you can't hear the tv. Oh and the tv volume must be preset because it cannot be adjusted. The chair in the corner has enough dust and dirt to have its own address! We woke up in the morning- back aching- the tv is on...again, the air unit is making noise, and we smell burnt toast. We went downstairs for breakfast to find freshly peeled uncooked potatoes, half cooked sausages, and the pancake machine only made quarter-sized pancakes. The lady/man said, that's how they are. "I can't help YOU PEOPLE!" The website needs to be updated to include the rude attitudes that the guests will encounter! P.S. The pool and hot tub are still not available???!!! News flash....They're not broken anymore....they no longer exist! We expected better from IHG! The experience should be rated less than 1!!! read more

Our go to is Holiday Inn Express when we travel. The hotels are reasonably priced, clean, and they serve breakfast in the morning.

Nothing special about this place, but it was not in poor condition. Television choices were limited, with no special channels (such as HBO or Showtime). However, there was a laminated channel list. The A/C unit continued to run continuously when set above the outdoor temperature, and even after I turned it "Off". I eventually had to unplug the unit from the wall in order to get to sleep. My colleague had the same issue in his room. Towels were mismatched - half were new and soft, and the others worn, scratchy and/or tattered (at home these would be called "cat towels"). All of the other bathroom amenities were in good shape, and included shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, and lotion. I could hear quite a bit of TV noise and walking from adjacent rooms. A breakfast buffet is included in the cost of your stay, which I normally appreciate as I tend to eat a banana every day (a staple at most hotel breakfast bars), however, there were no bananas at this property during our entire stay. Finally, it seems that IHG does not email receipts out after your stay like other hotel chains, so I have been trying to get in touch with the hotel without success (via both phone and email). On my next visit to Mattoon, I will be staying at another hotel property. read more

I thought this place was terrific, despite the pool being unavailable for the foreseeable future. The food was good, there is 24 hour free coffee and tea, and the staff went out of their way to help my kid when they had a question. If you have sensitive skin you might need to sleep with your own blanket as I had a reaction to whatever detergent they use, but that was my skin's fault and not theirs as so one else in my family had that issue. We booked two adjoining rooms well in advance (prob 1.5 months beforehand). Got here at 3 to check in and were told the rooms were not ready yet. We took the kids bowling and when we came back 2 hours later, only of of the two rooms was available. The second room was NOT adjoining. We had booked it so the girls could have a room of their own and a sense of their own space with me close by to chaperone. So the girls will have a bed to sleep on, and I will either be sleeping in a chair or the bathtub because someone didn't know how to do his/her job. There was no apology, discount, or anything offered. For the price tag of one room, I really expected better accommodations. You've got outdated everything, a filthy pool/hot tub area, and a very apathetic staff member at the front desk. read more

Matt is a very customer focused manager! I stayed there again this past week and he was very engaging and helpful as always. In truth, my previous stay was marred by my idiotic accusation and insistence that an item had been stolen from my room. I later discovered the missing item was in my possession the entire time and promptly apologized to Matt and he graciously accepted it even though he had already begun the investigation process, which would obviously been very uncomfortable for him. Thank You Matt and your staff. I look forward to future stays in your hotel. read more

We staying at the HI express (my wife has instilled in me a need to shorten words!) when we came in for a weekend with the family. Upon entering we were greeted by a very friendly lady who was very knowledgable about the area and the hotel. They also had cookies throughout the day = excellent! The rooms were above average in size w/ a couple queen beds, windows that open (a plus as it's rare anymore) and nice flat screen 32 inch TVs. Standard accompaniments in the room w/ free internet - a must anymore. The workout room was a little lacking, but got the job done. An upright and a recumbent bike were present as well as a treadmill. Enough to keep you busy for a bit. The pool area was very nice and located away from the hotel actions which made it nice that people fresh out of the water weren't tracking pool water all over the hotel. The food in the morning was excellent. The sitting area is ample and the food plentiful. They offered hot options including meat, eggs, and cinnamon rolls as well as plenty of fruit, cereal, yogurt and, the show stopper, do it yourself pancakes with what seemed to be a larger, modified easy bake oven! Overall, this was a great place to spend a couple nights. A step up from many of the other hotels in the area and well worth the price of admission with the internet and breakfast. Coffee served all day made it easy to stay alert at all hours and the staff were all exceptionally friendly. This is where we'll be staying when we come to visit in the future. read more

Clean rooms but not cheap at $119 per night for a double bed room. People are nice. The breakfast is lame with stale bread, muffins and donuts, and hardly any fruit with banana and crappy old oranges. Spoon in the raisin till is dirty and gross. This place and others like it should help the fat Americans by offering more fruit and fewer cinnamon rolls! I will try it again if my local rep insists. read more

During our vacation, we have stayed at several HIExpress. All in MI were great. This one in Mattoon, IL has fallen short. Here is the list: someone's eyeglasses were left beside the bed on a nightstand when we entered the room, bar of soap was missing, no breakfast hard boiled eggs or hot breakfast sandwiches available like other HIExpress hotels, no luggage carts available (all other HIExpress' had carts), no ice bucket, front desk attendant was indifferent and not very friendly. When asked about the carts when we checked in and before we left, the attendant said he did not know where they were in the building. We never saw luggage carts. Note to management: If you put them up because of Covid, it is okay, just tell us! C'mon Mattoon Holiday Inn Express! We were counting on you! You let us down! read more

Five words: Cinnamon scented shampoo and conditioner! Too cool. I would definitely return to this Holiday Inn Express the next time I'm in Mattoon! They have an indoor pool, a fitness center, and a business center. Just off the main lobby is a large breakfast/sitting area. Breakfast has different offerings on different days. When I was there, they had scrambled eggs, link sausage, and biscuits and gravy among several other standard options. I'm told on other days, they offer pancakes and omelets. The room was comfy with a Soft and Firm pillow choice on both sides and tons of channels to choose from on TV. I loved that they had the Syfy Channel! Cracker Barrel is walking distance away, a Marathon gas station and convenience store is just across the street, and the hotel is situated just off to the side of a little shopping plaza just off the highway that consists of Buffalo Wild Wings and Stadium Grill (both decent dining locations). read more

Convenient small shelves in shower for soap, shampoo, etc. Pillows too firm for my wife but just right for me. Nice work space with plenty of electrical outlets for devices. I've stayed in a number of HIE's but none better and most not as good. So good I am writing a review which I normally wouldn't do for a chain hotel. read more

This hotel made me decide to never stay at another Holiday Inn again. I was staying there for a week and the room I was put in smelled of cigarette smoke, even though it's a non-smoking hotel. I made the front desk aware, but they did not have any other equivalent king-sized rooms. I had to put up with this smell for the week, and I tried to get a hold of the manager through the course of the next three weeks after my stay to discuss this with her. When I finally got a hold of her (she never called ME back), she said she was sorry but since I was already at 'such a low rate for this hotel, I cannot discount you any further.' So just because I was paying $80/night to stay in middle-of-nowhere Illinois, you can't discount someone who was put in a smelly room?? I called customer service, and they only offered me ONE free night's stay. So apparently the signs in all of the hotel rooms that say "if you are not happy with any part of your stay, you will not pay for it" isn't all that true. Customer service said it is COMPANY POLICY that they can and will only refund ONE free night's stay, never more. Among other problems with my stay: - Room had ants - Desk chair in the room was broken - Maids don't restock shampoo & conditioner every day - Broken TV remote Why stay at hotels if their customer service is terrible? We have stayed her twice now. Very nice staff person checking in during our recent stay. Rooms were clean and very comfortable. Only concern this trip was the discovery that our room door did not lock properly. We did report it to the front desk and probably could have moved, but we were too exhausted from our trip to pack up and relocate. How bad was it . Let me list the ways. Made reservations telling them my wife was in a wheelchair and needed a Rollin shower. When we arrived we were given a walkin tub room. After changing rooms the next problem was the carpet, wife had a problem moving by herself . Then they had put the refrigerator in the hallway by the entrance and bathroom doors so to use either doors you had to squeeze around. The bathroom door opened wrong way so a person in wheelchair had to roll up to it then back up to open then had to hold on to handle and move chair one handed to close. Not a handicap friendly room. The walls are very thin. I could hear the lady on the other side of the wall having a phone conversation. She wasn't screaming or anything but using her normal voice, but I heard every word and it echo'd through the walls. I can hear every step of the people above me as well. There was also loud banging on my first night here. Annoying when you're trying to sleep. The air controller in the room is extremely loud and even when I turned if OFF it still periodically came on waking me up and scaring the crap out of me. Also on the first night I heard someone knocking on the door next to my room and voiced that he was security. I thought it might have been related to the banging noises and someone had called to complain and security came. I called down to the front desk and asked if he knew what was going on on the second floor from the banging. He said he's not aware. I told him that I also heard someone knocking on the door claiming he was security. The front clerk just said "we don't have security guards here". So I waited for him to say that he would look into it, but instead he just said "is there anything else I can help you with?". My room was a two queen bed suite. That is what I requested and what I paid for. However housekeeping never makes the second bed. They would only make one bed. I thought the first night they forgot and so I didn't think much of it, but every night after that they never even touched it. It was always left the way I left it. I've heard of this before and I think it has something to do with only one occupancy, but c'mon, I paid extra for the double queen suite, which means it should be made up weather or not single occupancy or not. It's kinda ridiculous. They also never cleared my take out garbage that was on the kitchen table. I had used plastic cups that I left on the sink counter and they neglected to clean that up as well. read more

I've stayed here several times now. Nice, clean, newer property. Breakfast is always well-stocked the entire time. Fresh baked cookies, coffee and hot water for choice of tea or hot chocolate each evening. Front desk is always helpful when you call and when you checkin and checkout. My only downside is the exercise equipment is a bit limited. read more

We stayed for 2 nights over NYE weekend and were very pleased with this hotel. We are often in the area to visit family, and this was our first time staying here instead of the Hampton, but we will stay here from now on. Breakfast was really good - my sons liked the eggs a lot. The pool area was clean and warm. The room was spacious and clean. Fitness room had a bike and some weights instead of just a treadmill. Another family was having a reunion/party at the hotel and seemed to have a fun time in the great room together, and it was nice to see that the hotel was so accommodating of them to have that space to be together. read more

Extremely clean, very friendly staff, over-large rooms. And as a previous reviewer noted, windows that open easily, allowing something other than the usual rarely-replaced-filters that plague so many hotel air systems. Really loved the lack of bolsters and questionable bed covers; everything was white and crisp except the foot warming blanket, which appeared clean and new. Breakfast was all right, lots of options. Wifi worked well, always a plus. Good for a family, too. I'd stay again. read more
