One of the best buying experiences the staff were helpful, not pushy and very knowledgable about the products they sell.

Heart of the Rockies Campground - Our tent on site.

    Heart of the Rockies Campground

The fire pit was well done (they shovel the ashes out after you leave so it was clean and empty) and the site had a picnic table. The trailer/RV sites are wide open in the front of the campground, but in close proximity to the office and community room/bathrooms. The tent sites are on the back of the campground and separated from the trailer/RV sites by a line of trees and a seasonal creek. There is a walking bridge allowing access to the front of the campground. The walk from our tent to the bathrooms was less than 2 minutes. The community center has free WiFi, couches, TV and a ping pong table (which my kids loved). There is also a playground and horseshoe pits (both are obviously older but in good shape). The bathrooms were great. They are not 5 Star, but clean, spacious and functional. The both have 3 sinks, 3 toilets and 3 showers. In the morning and evening when temps outside dropped off, the bathroom was comfortably warm and during the day it was cool. As we were tent camping, these bathrooms were wonderful. The tent sites are a little narrow and there is not much privacy, but they have beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and the tree line does help limit some of the road noise. Our only issue was that our last full day, we were the only people in the tent area and they didn't take the locks off the water spigots, but we were able to use one at an open trailer site nearby. The best though is it is wonderfully situated halfway between Salida/Poncha Springs and Monarch Mountain. Numerous hiking trails are within a couple miles in each direction. All in all we would definitely stay here again.

We've made April trips to ski Monarch for over a decade- in fact I have stayed at this park several previous times. Because we are skiing, I asked the manager about a late checkout AND OFFERED TO PAY for such. He declined payment, agreed, and asked that we pack up the site fully before we left to ski that day. I explained that our dogs would be staying in the camper that day, so we couldn't fully break things down, and to the best of my knowledge, had an agreement. That morning before we left, we packed up the campsite, leaving outside 3 dog ties (needed to secure the dogs when we got them out of the camper!) A door mat, and a spare tire for the camper that rides in the door and is the last thing in or out. Also left on the picnic table was dog leavings in a sealed plastic bag. We returned from skiing at 3PM (agreed upon time), and Chuck the manager immediately drove up and blocked us in, instantly SCREAMING that we had violated our agreement because the camper wasn't fully broken down, and telling us he wouldn't let us leave until I paid him for an additional night- which was paid. Reminding him that we had discussed and gotten agreement over both late checkout and that we could not fully pack up didn't change the level of screaming, which quickly shifted to profanity over dog poop, both the stuff in the sealed bag on the table and others around the campsite. Cleaning up leavings is literally the last thing we do before leaving a site to make sure we get it all, and he gave us zero opportunity to clean the site before screaming at us. He screamed at us both for the dog poop bag and accused us of having no intention of cleaning up, which seems mutually exclusive. During our stay, I also heard this manager berate a person who called to ask about rates and amenities. He teased my wife because when we got there late Friday night (also arranged) we couldn't find the codes to the bathroom- and nature called. I notice that the secretary of state shows the owner of the campground is not Chuck, and the owners mailing address was the campground until last year. It looks like this place is "under new management," and not in the good sort of way. When I mentioned I would be writing a review, Chuck laughed, and also laughed because he feels he runs the only RV park in the area and people would be compelled to stay with him regardless. Well, here is my review Chuck, and let me strongly recommend the 4 Seasons RV Resort, riverside on the Arkansas in Salida. We have also stayed there several times in winter, It is beautiful and has some of the nicest management we have run into- management that has always let us check out late.

Salida East Campground - Small tent pads. Not recommended for camping with a large group

This is the closest park service campground to Salida which makes it super sweet!…read more I reserved site 21 online, which was like $28/night. However, if you just show up, other sites that are available are only $18/night. I wish I would have waited to reserve, but at least you can drive here and know by reserving early that you have a place to sleep! You also need to pay a daily state park fee, unless you have a yearly pass. (this is in addition to the campground fee) Our site was right on the river, and even though this campground is right off the main road into town or into Big Horn Sheep Canyon, when the sun sets, you will not really hear the cars and trucks going by due to the sounds of the river. It was very high when we visited. At night, depending on your site, and if you are in a tent or camper, you may see a bright light shining from a business across the street. Not to worry, as you will still be able to see a night sky of amazingly beautiful stars! It was cool to be hanging out after a long day and see people rafting down the river. The sites are pretty open, and there are only a few with shade. However, there is plenty of parking, and most people were pretty respectful. There are people camping out on the other side of the river, which was a little sketchy and strange. They didn't do anything weird when we were there, but it was a little uncomfortable. However, since I had my dog, and there were other campers nearby, I felt safe. The one recommendation I have is that they use sand or dirt trucked in for their tent pad areas. They currently have gravel! Gravel is useless with a tent, as my tent stakes could not find secure footing in the ground. I then tried to pitch the tent next to the tent pad area in the dirt, and the dirt was rock solid! I then realized why there were so many large stones in the tent pad area. I used these to help my tent stay grounded and upright for the two days and nights we were there. (When we were there, there was a truck coming into the campground area in the morning and dropping off dirt in a big gully. ) The port-a-pots were the cleanest I have ever seen!

Inconvenient, but serviceable. We had campsite 24 - which…read moreis close enough to hear the river, but not close enough to drown out the constant sound of cars passing on highway 50. The tent pad barely fit our 6 person tent, so keep that in mind if you're camping with family or friends. When the wind blows in from the west, you'll get to enjoy the sickly sweet smell of pit potties. But the biggest problem was the wind. I suspect it's not always this windy, but it was like trying to camp in a wind tunnel. And getting a fire started was a challenge which took three adults blocking the wind just to get it started. Also, we were very concerned about how close the burn pit was to the local plants. There are already several wildfires blazing in CO as I write this, and we didn't want to be the cause of another. This meant we had to extra diligent in watching our fire. A situation that was helped by the fact that the grill grate would lay right on top of the foliage if you let go of it. So if you are just needing a place to sleep, this will work. But if you want a pleasant camping experience, I recommend you look at Hecla Junction Campground or O'Haver Lake Campground
