A 9 hole pitch and putt type of a golf course with the longest hole probably 200 yards. Now I am sure there will be a lot of people who say it isn't worth playing a course like this (the Golf nuts predominately) but I disagree for two reasons. Not all of us are golf nuts and secondly this must be good practice for the short game. They have a fully stocked shop, a driving range and you can also get lessons from a PGA pro. So if you want a knock about, a lesson or to practice those 9 irons into the green then Dukes Meadow on Chiswick Bridge is the place for you.

There must be a hundred bays but evenings are packed so expect to wait. The pros there are great and well worth a visit to hone your skills. I use Bruce who I highly recommend although I'm still rubbish at golf so there's something wrong there. There is a lovely and challenging par three course over the other side. It's £15 a pop but I consider that decent value considering how the course is laid out and kept. It's really very good. Tight greens, lots of traps and lots of water. And it's very picturesque. And where Duke's Meadow have really upped their game is in the cafe where you can now get decent drinks and very good grub ranging from burgers to chicken caesar salad and nice home made cakes. A far cry from where it used to be. It says in the prelim that it's not suitable for kids. I couldn't disagree more and there are loads of kids there. I bring my own and he loves the range, the putting green and the muffins! you can sit outside in the sun and watch people teeing off on the first and losing their balls straight away and it's all rather lovely. A little haven in the middle of London. Pricey but worth it.

As I work in the city, I also find it a great place to escape the office and just hit some balls for 30 mins. I've had two good experiences using Waterstock Golf Course as a driving range. My little brother…read more(11) and I decided to learn Golf, so booked a driving range lesson with Paul Bryant. Arriving at the course was a doddle - it's just off the M40 after the Wheatley turning (when heading east), and there's loads of free parking. The guys at the club house were very friendly, and had obviously catered for children before. Handing us our 6 irons, and tokens for the ball machine, we headed over to the driving range building. It was raining, so we got a bit damp walking over, but the range itself was covered so this wasn't a problem. Paul was a superb teacher - very knowledgable, and a cheerful enthusiastic manner. I would strongly recommend asking for him if booking a first lesson. My brother and I learned a huge amount in the 30 minutes we were with him, managing to smack the balls up to 150 yards (having never hit a golf ball before)!! We then had plenty of free time after the lesson to hit more balls on our own. The only critism I have is that I've since seen machines that put the balls on the tees for you - at Waterstock I was always bending over to put the next ball on the tee, which got a bit tiring and hampered my learning to swing the club. The lesson cost around £30 for both of us. The balls cost £3 for 50, £5 for 100, or £14 for 300 (which we did), and the range wasn't crowded at all. We had a drink in the clubhouse bar afterwards - not too pricey or busy. All in all a rewarding, convenient and inexpensive morning's entertainment.

The best value for money offer by far came from Paul Warner - the professional at Mytime Golf who manage the courses at Hollingbury and Waterhall. After making sure he was aware that we were absolute beginners who had never even swung a golf club before (so he had his work cut out) we had our first lesson at the beginning of July. Paul was absolutely fantastic, despite us being truly awful to start with - his lessons are well-paced, easy to follow and comprehensive. After a month or so we played our first round (albeit badly) and after our final lesson a couple of weeks ago we're now confident enough to go out on the busier, more popular courses. Although I have yet to play the course at Hollingbury (I'm sticking firmly to courses with lots of Par 3s at the moment) we've spent a lot of time up there. They're currently undergoing some much-needed refurbishments including their bar area and pro shop so the place is starting to look really good. The staff are always smiling, friendly and welcoming and there seems to be a good sense of community up there. The course has probably has the most stunning views in Brighton (well, what I've seen from standing on the first tee anyway) and I'm really looking forward to playing there once my shots are going far enough to tackle the longer holes!

They've got a really friendly little sandwich shop here too so worth popping in and feeding up before heading to the green!

It is not normally busy but they do have a membership scheme in operation so it is worth phoning to make sure they do not have an event on. The course is challenging in places but should allow for a good score once familar with the layout. The first and last holes are the most difficult - the tree in the middle of the first fairway is particularly fun! It is not a long course but is quite hilly, providing a good work out (unless you opt for the buggy option). The clubhouse is a newly built Scandia-Hus building with a great little bar/coffee area. There is a nice terrace with fantastic views north. The pro/owner is a nice friendly chap too. My only criticism is that the bar is often closed by 8pm in the height of summer which is their loss really as I have a drink in the local pub instead.
