Brandon D. with one of the "impersonators," during the zombie walk. He asked for a pic of us first

You'll see some girl hanging at the curb in a soiled, poofy wedding dress, trying to pass for Amy Adams' character from "Enchanted." Around her there are various men in worn-out costumes with the muscles sewn in, Captain Jack Sparrows whose drunken swaggers may or may not be real, and any number of masked Muppets, Transformers, and other characters. Some look a lot like the character they are impersonating. Most don't: http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/hollywood-boulevard-sidewalk-characters-los-angeles?select=pMQi3SVtg7ZZg3K_xyibkQ#Oe_DDi43ea0Hz367GDMnvg You may have seen "Confessions of a Superhero." You may have watched them interviewed on Jimmy Kimmel. You may have bumped into one, asked for a picture with him, and then was hassled for a $5 tip. Every now and then we get a news story about some fight breaking out between Spongebob or Chewbacca or Batman or any one of the characters who hang around outside of Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Usually the fights are over that latter item above or so-called "territory." They are in no way associated with the theatre. These are just people who discovered, that like strippers, they could make more money in tips doing this than getting a 9-to-5 job. Many of them are out-of-work actors who can't catch a break. Some of them are just downright insane. I normally don't patronize the sidewalk characters, leaving them to the hordes of tourists. Brandon D. and I did take a picture with one once back in 2006 during the first ever Southern California zombie walk, which went down Hollywood Boulevard. Bran's a huge "Terminator" fan and as we lurched by the theatre, caked in undead make-up that October night, I happened to point out the guy in the Arnold mask with the foil modifications. Amusingly the guy was actually flagging us down wanting a picture of us on his own phone first. He gladly reciprocated (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/hollywood-boulevard-sidewalk-characters-los-angeles?select=pMQi3SVtg7ZZg3K_xyibkQ#tVZ-kEhGD_HKPnn6QHUfkA), didn't bother us for money, which we didn't realize was an expected thing for most of them at the time, and we were on our way. That guy was cool. There was a time for a while there when their activity was deemed illegal and the characters were exiled from standing in front of the Chinese Theatre. That period didn't last long, though, and the impersonators returned. As I said, I normally don't do business with these people, and really it's among the most schlocky, touristy things to do in this country. But if you're into the cheese of it all, and you're willing to throw a fiver at a woman dressed like she's basing her costume off a Hong Kong-made bootleg Wonder Woman action figure, yeah, knock yourself out.

If I were the designer, I might have picked more paths just from a liability perspective? Nice water fixtures in the park. It was pretty quiet when i was there on the weekend morning. I did see some folks tending to the landscaping and cleaning while I was there, so I'm happy it's well maintained. I've heard about events being held there in the past, but I've never attended, as parking seems like it would be a bit of a nightmare. 2026: 20/100

The park itself is nice but small. A nice patch of green inside the city center. It's on a sloped hillside so there are steps to navigate. There is a sloped path on one side to roll up a stroller or wheelchair. Fountain water feature had kids playing in it. Grassy area for a blanket to sit and relax. Today there were two stages setup for the live music. Great sounding sound system and plenty of room to get up and dance. A little warm today so they had large portable fans with water misters strategically placed did what they could to cool some visitors. Quite a few food trucks and some food vendors in the park plaza as well. Great selection of hot foods. Since we arrived early there weren't too many people yet so no lines to wait for food. We had to leave early so we had to miss the July 4th drone show. I assume it was fantastic given the festive ambiance and clear skies.

However, the monument on top of the hill has triangle shaped plaques naming Burbank's sister cities, so in a way the name still works. The park itself is tiny, basically a small grassy delta at a busy intersection. Its crowning point is a hill with a statue on top of Burbank's namesake, David Burbank, who was a dentist and real estate investor. The statue is posed in a way that makes it look like he's overseeing the city he built, but most likely he never imagined what it would become since he died in 1895 and Burbank didn't become "The Media Capital of the World" until around the early 1900's. The pillar on which he and the American flag sits is carved with images recognizing important figures and eras in Burbank, like Amelia Earhart, who once lived and flew here, and the railroad and film industries that helped the city grow. At the base, including the aforementioned plaques for the sister cities, is a time capsule set to be opened in 2060. For such a small park and monument, it tries to encapsulate as much of the city's history as it can. I actually ended up staying at this park for a couple of hours while waiting for my car to be fixed since the surrounding area is full of tire stores as well as restaurants. Instead of waiting in a crowded lobby full of impatient people wanting their car back, I sat on the grass, admired the trees in full bloom, most of whose flowers had fallen and carpeted the grass, and I also got to enjoy the view of the mountains which the statue also seemed to be doing. Parking is free on the main road and side streets, or if you're like me your car is being held hostage by the tire store. If you live in Burbank, are just in the area, a history buff, or just looking for something to do, this is a nice quick stop.

WARNING: Aggressive "Free CD" Hustlers - DO NOT TAKE THE CDs!…read moreLocation: Right outside the Muscle Beach parking lot, near the outdoor gym. Be extremely careful if you are walking near the Muscle Beach parking lot. There is a group of three men claiming to be "up-and-coming musicians" running a very aggressive, coordinated hustle. Here is exactly how their scam works so you can avoid it: * The Hook: One guy will approach you and try to hand you a "free" CD. Even when we said no, he played on our sympathy, claiming it was his own music and asking us to just show some support for a starter artist. Out of politeness, we took it. * The Trap: He immediately offered to sign the CD. While we were distracted waiting for him to sign it, his two partners swarmed us and pushed their own CDs into our hands. * The Shake-Down: Once the first CD was signed, the "free" aspect completely disappeared. He demanded a donation and refused to accept small bills. When my husband took out a $20 bill to break it, the guy practically grabbed it out of his hand and walked away. * The Swarm: Then, the other two musicians cornered us, demanding money for their CDs. My husband gave one of them his last $5, and the guy actually complained that it wasn't enough. The third guy started whining about getting nothing. * The Intimidation: I tried to be nice and intended to give the last guy $5, but they started physically circling me, aggressively demanding $20. I felt incredibly uncomfortable and intimidated. I told them to just take the CDs back--we didn't even listen to that type of music and certainly weren't paying $60 for it. They refused to take them back, eventually lowering their demand to $20 to split between them. To get out of this threatening situation quickly, I handed over a $20 bill just so they would leave us alone. This whole experience was extremely upsetting. I would gladly give my money to someone genuinely in need, but being bullied and cornered into "donating" is completely unacceptable. It left such a bad taste for us, we ended up did not spend a dime in any of shops there. Not event a souvenir! Bottom Line: If anyone approaches you with a CD, do not make eye contact, do not engage, and DO NOT take the CD no matter what they say. Just keep walking!
