We parked and walked through the park and learned about the history of the place. It's all dated back to 1847. There was a huge oak tree planted here which died in 1987 and was cut down. The Oak of Peace played an important role in the history of California. it's a historic spot to be at it feels very serene here beautiful trees and plants all around picnic tables and restrooms available I also learned that you can rent it out and do private parties here. How nice would that be, specially kids birthday parties where they can be in nature, explore and run around. Very lovely find.

The Pondella Building is a castle like huge home converted into collection of offices, shops and…read moresmall businesses. Made up of Bavarian architecture w/ a lot of Victorian character it's a huge staple of Sherman Oaks and LA Valley local flavor - established in the late 70s (1977). I've walked, driven and bussed by more times than I can count. Gazed at the gorgeous spiral staircase, side alley storage place and brick stone pathways leading in as well as out. Two stories high of local services including insurance, therapy (both physical and mental - including acupuncture) self care (lashes, brows & permanent via Ladies Boom LA), eyecare (attached nextdoor), birthing and infant services to name some, but there is a few more. If driving by down Riverside Drive it's something that will often hold your eye. Parking on the street or in a shared lot just before the corner off Riverside/Woodman Avenue. They have their own spaces in back - through their alley which you can access from either street or side.

I believe the style to be Victorian. It certainly looks old enough and has enough original features for it to actually be from that time period. The building is immaculately maintained, clean, freshly painted and if for any reason you get to go into the offices of some of the people that work there be prepared for a treat because there is a lot of cool architectural features. Exposed wood beams, bricks inside, wood fan flooring. It would be really cool to get an office here and work from inside. Quiet, quaint, classic, you certainly feel like you have been transported elsewhere.

There's a good selection of restaurants, some bars, and a few shops here and there. Mainly more eateries than the others. It pretty much street parking along the main roads or neighborhoods. There's a huge parking lot a block away where the red line station is. Crowds are alway pretty mellow. Not stuffy like the city scene. Majority of time if we're in the area, it normally for a meal and then a drink afterwards.

Or from the Vineland Avenue perspective you can cruise to places like Idle Hour (the wheel barrel bar), TeaPop (cafe meets art gallery) and that crazy multiple intersection with Lankershim + Camarillo Street that only a creative mad genius could have been ambitious enough to design O.O and place in the NoHo Arts district. Getting around via any method of travel including on foot is an interesting one. There is some free residential and business parking as well as street with few restrictions and plenty along outer streets like Vineland Place, but just keep in mind during the day certain areas are limited to 2hr parking. Enjoy a slice of NoHo via these district of creative expressive bliss... More than one Starbucks because a lot of locals need their fix (plus one is drive thru and the other is walk in) but highly recommend supporting the smaller mom & pops such as Amp Coffee, Horror Vibes and Amsterdam on Magnolia near the stellar newer brewery in the area Lawless (a hidden gem must). You'd never know that it was here without prior knowledge. It's worth a quick visit if you happen to be nearby. The blog BigOrangeLandmarks provides a great summary of the life of J.B. Lankershim and the history of the monument. After his death Lankershim willed almost 20 acres of land to the Boy Scouts of America and asked that an obelisk be erected in his name and that his ashes be spread over the land. It's Time to jump into The…read moreTimeMobile & scour the Earth & take you to places from a different time that you won't believe still exist. We have set the dial to the 1960's in the town of North Hollywood CA. There is a GINORMOUS 20 foot tall Genie statue standing on top of a building here. Well let's back up a bit & start from the very beginning. In 1960 Harold & Ted Haserjian founded a carpet business & they named it Carpeteria. It started in Canoga Park & was later relocated to the Valencia area in 1989. It had over 25 stores & over 40 franchises in the California & Nevada areas. They prospered for nearly 40 years but finally declared bankruptcy in 1999. Before there were Big Box Stores there was Carpeteria. They were Famous for their Low Prices, Commercials with that Catchy Carpeteria Jingle & their 20 foot tall Carpet Genies. Their mascot was an Aladdin Magic Lamp Style Genie that wore a turban & held the Carpeteria sign above his head. The sign was in the shape of a giant rolled up carpet. It was a 2 sided mirror image figure with the same face on both sides. As a result no matter which way you were traveling in traffic you could see the genie coming & going. It was impossible for potential rug buyers & kids of all ages not to be lured into their stores. The Carpet Genie would grant your interior flooring wishes come true - wall to wall carpeting for the entire house at a Discount Price! Now what could be better than that! All you had to do is stop by one of their many locations & the salespeople would make that wish become a reality. The Carpeteria Genie evoked an image of flying carpets & a magical time long ago. There were 2 variations of the genie statues one with teeth & one with no teeth & all lips. Now during the 60's magical figures were all the rage on TV with programs like I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched & the cartoon Shazam! The magic genie theme continued later on & into today with movies like Kazam & of course Aladdin in animation & live action forms & other movie & TV shows. The Carpet Genie somewhat resembles the 1960's cartoon Shazzan! The same company that produced The famous Muffler Men statues produced these Genies too. Unfortunately The Carpet Genies have disappeared over time. There are only 5 Carpeteria Genies that are known to exist unless someone has one secretly hidden & hanging out in their garage somewhere. LOL! The only one left in California is this one in North Hollywood. There are 2 in Nevada - one in Las Vegas & a slightly smaller one in Reno. The other 2 are now located in Ohio where there were never any Carpeteria stores. They are however in a safe place at The American Sign Museum in Cincinnati Ohio for all to come & visit. Even though the company went out of business after nearly 40 years in 1999, surprisingly a few of the franchises have survived for decades & are still around today. There's a Carpeteria on 2501 E. Main St. in Ventura CA. I took some exterior photos of the store so you can see. Now the No Hollywood Carpeteria Genie stood here & was later owned by L & S Carpet & currently owned by Superior Tile. The Genie was in bad shape & needed repainting. Superior Tile repainted him in their signature colors of Apricot & Black that matches the colors in the new sign he's holding. Before coming here you should check out some of their old vintage commercials on YouTube with that famous jingle that sticks in your head for Forever. Also check out the 60's Hanna Barbera Shazzan cartoon with Chuck & Nancy, the Magic Ring & the Flying Camel Kaboobie! To make it worth your trip check out these places only a few minutes away in the same town of North Hollywood. There's The Television Hall of Fame - a Free Outdoor Exhibit with lots of Statues of some of the Legends in TV including The Lucy Cast & Johnny Carson, Betty White & many others. And right next door is Bruxie - a good chicken & waffles place. They have restored one of the oldest dining cars in California - Phil's Diner. You can stop on by to visit that too. Located on a hillside at the corner of Riverside and Fletcher Drive are concrete blocks, or…read morefootings, that local residents affectionately refer to as "Silver Lake's Stonehenge." They were once used to support a wooden trestle, called the Fletcher Dr Viaduct, that was over 450 feet long and 40 feet high. The line was decommissioned in 1955 and the viaduct was later torn down and now all that remains are the concrete block relics. In 2003 the footings were declared a Los Angeles Historical Monument, No. 770. The Red Car system was a privately owned mass transit system that ran from 1901-1961. It consisted of electrically powered streetcars, light rail, and buses. In the 1920s it was the largest electric railway system in the world. The historic footings have been used for a number of interesting guerrilla art projects. There's also a short and easy 1.6 mile hike that includes an up close view of the footings. It starts at Allesandro Way and Lake View Ave and it traverses the former Red Car route.
