I understand that sermons often reflect on the power of grace and redemption through Jesus, the reference to Auschwitz during a funeral service felt profoundly inappropriate and offensive. To even suggest forgiveness for someone responsible for such immense suffering, let alone to mention Auschwitz during a eulogy meant to honor and uplift-dilutes the severity of those crimes and the dignity of their victims. Figures like Hitler should never be held up, directly or indirectly, as symbols in a spiritual reflection, especially in a sacred moment of remembrance and healing. To invoke examples that glorify or give clout to such atrocities was distasteful and a disgrace coming from someone who is entrusted to offer spiritual guidance through a eulogy.
