After looking at one, we switched it up to another for a 7:30am mass. Gave us more time for breakfast and our connection. So we found ourselves in St. Francis of Assisi parish, in a church with perfectly preserved murals and p paintings. The usher welcomed us in knowingly. He wasn't overbearing, asking when we were going to join. He simply laughed with us about train layovers. One time he had a layover on the east coast for 12 hours. When we went up for communion, he stood closer to our assortment of sleeping bags and carry-ons. Such a kind gesture. Physical presence does a lot to help everyone feel cared for and calm. The music was great. My kid said it reminded him of a Disney movie. I think he found it cinematic. I enjoyed singing along at full volume.

On this occasion, however, there was quite a bit of conversation taking place, which made it somewhat difficult to maintain a prayerful atmosphere. Personally, I find the Traditional Latin Mass to be especially reverent and conducive to prayer. The priests are clearly very intelligent and deliver thoughtful, meaningful homilies. My only negative experience was with some of the parishioners. Unfortunately, they seemed rather unwelcoming and somewhat cliquish. When I greeted a couple of families, they simply looked at me and turned away without responding. I have attended many different churches and have never experienced that kind of reception before. It left the impression that the community may not be particularly open to newcomers.

Very strange place to have a daily Mass. not sure why they don't have in the main sanctuary. There were about 2 dozen people in attendance. Pretty good attendance for daily Mass. Confession is after Mass on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the week. Website says to tell the Pastor b4 Mass if you want confession but there really was no opportunity. The Pastor left after Mass and I followed him and a few parishioners. Turns out confessions are heard in the chapel. I love Padre Luis as he was at St. Josephs for many years. I just think the website could do a better job of informing people where everything is at. Mass is bilingual.

Who doesn't love a go-to parish community if you've gone here frequently?! I love to hear mass, especially at different places wherever my travels take me - and it's important for me to have that spiritual nourishment, not only on Sundays, but during the week as well. It always feels good to have that alone time with the One above. :) My grandparents recently moved to their assisted living facility in the Arden-Arcade neighborhood (within the boundaries of "the only Jesuit Parish" - St. Ignatius), but I have been making sure that I particularly attend mass here - whether it be a weekday and/or a weekend, due to its home-y & cozy environment. From the moment I attended the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass here, I loved it very much. It has everything you need out of a faithful church with a devout, diverse, and close-knit community: a Pastor (Fr. Luis) that's orthodox, obedient, unafraid to speak on hard hitting topics, and gives meaningful homilies that have good flow and delivery - in addition to a humble laity; reverent, and sane liturgical practices; multiple occasions to receive the Sacrament of Penance; and Eucharistic Adoration. One outstanding factor is the variety of masses laid out during the week and weekends, ranging from English and Spanish services - that serves an active church community - both parishioners & visitors alike. It may be in an older neighborhood (less affluent Oak Park), which it may seem a bit sketchy, and unsafe - however, the times I've been (mornings) have been fine, and doesn't seem to attract a "bad" crowd - nevertheless, avoid leaving things out of plain sight inside your vehicles, and use your judgment & be cautious at all times. On the other hand, parking is a-plenty, since the church was two lots - in addition to ample parking on the street, since it seems to be solely for church parking (front row) along 1st Avenue! The exterior of the church is pretty epic, since it is an important part of history in the Oak Park neighborhood - as the parish was established in 1909. There's so much history that the interior of the church speaks its wonders - it seems to be left untouched - old, but full of history - and that's one of the many factors that I've come to love about being able to worship here. It has so many traditional features that are special, and have lots of history in them (check out the church's website - and go to their Parish History) - this parish has quite a history in the Diocese of Sacramento! Whenever I'd get the chance to visit my grandparents and/or just because I'm in the Capital City, I know forsure that there's a special place where I can get my worship on! Thank you, Immaculate Conception Parish for being a church away from home! *I can't wait to hear your pipe organ again! (not sure if they just used their organ JUST for Easter Sunday, LOL!)

But thankfully on special days like today 7.31.23, they had a special mass for their namesake's feast day! Father Tom Lucas is the pastor and tonight there were other Jesuits present but most importantly Fr. Tom O'Neill is leaving! He is moving to LA and I sure will miss him. I always got something so great from his homilies; his calm, gentle demeanor along with his direct statements and smile but most importantly his love for Jesus shows. Overall, this is one of the churches I frequent bc it's centrally located in Sacramento, specifically in the Arden area. I also like that it is clean and bright. It does get busy along Watt and Arden but nevertheless, it's still a nice church to go to especially after work when you just want to pray for all the patients, your colleagues and everyone else! Check out this church, there's also free parking unlike in downtown where you have to pay at the meter spots. And don't forget to admire the beautiful roses on display right alongside the brick wall of the church.
