    Blessing the children

Saint Joseph Catholic Church is known by many locals as the "church in the vineyard." It is located in Clarksburg, CA, a popular wine growing region in the Sacramento Delta. Although a majority of the parishioners are from the local farming and viticultural community, there always is a welcoming vibe extended to people who are new to the area. A few noteworthy highlights of this church include... The outreach charities, such as the Blue Mobil Mall and the Mobil Food Locker. These charities are a means to provide food and clothing to disadvantaged children and families. The annual spring craft and fair, in which local artisans set up tables in the parking lot for display of their work for all to see. A reenactment of events surrounding Easter crucifixion with a funeral and a stone covered cave And lastly, Saint Joseph church, in collaboration with the S.E.S hall down the road, hosts the Sunday mass for Trinity day. This important day includes a parade, which actually requires a chunk of River Road to "shut down" and ends with a fantastic Portuguese Festa.

    Gorgeous church.

What a charming Church this is. As much as I admit liking the pomp & circumstance of some of the larger, grander Catholic behemoths, St. Joseph's fits perfectly into it's cozy locale across the street from the rustic Sacramento River. It's a smaller church but what it might lack in size, it makes up for in devotion to the Blessed Virgin. And my yardstick for Yelp Stars for any Marian-oriented church is always this: HOW IS THE MOTHER MARY SHRINE? Is it placed amid a serene scene surrounded by nature? Are the grounds tidy and neat around it? Most importantly, are there roses? Remember, Mother Mary is often called "Our Lady of the Roses" because these beautiful flowers are one of her symbols. Fragrant roses have long served as symbols of the Virgin Mary, and appear in some of the miraculous Marian apparitions that people worldwide have reported. Mary is known as the "mystic rose" or the "rose without thorns" among some Christians, because of her esteemed role as the mother of Jesus Christ so roses are a must. Here at St. Joseph's, our beloved Mother is properly adored. Venture beyond the Memorial Walk & Prayer Garden arch and a brief walk down a garden path brings you to the stone Marian memorial and yes, it is framed in front by a line of rose bushes. Thus proper decor for Our Lady's shrine means an automatic 5 Yelp Stars from this dutiful Catholic.

No pipe organs here - the sacred music is guitar and vocals. It's fun to sing along or just tap your feet to the talented church band. Pastor Marc is a gem too. I like City Life, because the community there is built to welcome people whether they are including lifelong believers, those mired in doubt or even those who are feeling hurt and/or openly hostile towards the church. I also really love their current meeting place which is sublet from Sol Collective, a great community arts non-profit.

Although much of the congregation embodies warmth and desire Christlikeness, some of the counseling team and specific pastors fail to acknowledge and take responsibility for the harm caused. There is a severe lack of support for women, specifically those who have experienced mistreatment within marriage. Though the elders believe they are upholding the sufficiency of scripture, women have felt unheard, disbelieved and further harmed in their "care". Furthermore, we have been disheartened in advocating for structural change and accountability in the counseling provided, as of recent. Counselor's may become certified through ACBC (Association of Certified Biblical Counselors), but not all are. I highly recommend asking questions regarding topics of abuse and what they believe to be scriptural "grounds for divorce". It would be beneficial to have this in writing to reference, for your protection. The understanding of modern fields of science, such as psychology (cognitive/personality disorders and neurodivergence) and relational abuse/trauma are discredited and mishandled. Women have suffered health issues from being pressured to remain and return to destructive marriages, without proper support. Guilt, fear and shame are used and disguised as a "call to obedience" and allegiance to God. As a member, you may face church discipline or excommunication if directives are not followed. The way I was treated made me distrustful of church leadership, the exercise of power, authority and Biblical control. If you think you may be experiencing abuse (even if not physical), please seek help from a trained & licensed therapist who specializes in trauma.

When I came to them in an emotional and relational crisis, I was met with judgment and authoritarian counsel rather than compassion and support. Multiple friends have shared similar experiences. When I raised concerns about this and other harmful practices within the soul care ministry, I was met with dismissal and responses like "we're sorry you feel that way," rather than a desire to understand or grow. My experience ultimately made the gospel and God's Word feel unapproachable and burdensome. While a "winsome" approach to evangelism is encouraged from the pulpit, I did not see that same posture extended to congregants. Matthew 23:4 reflects my experience during my final year at Redeemer Bible Church: "They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them."

The other pastors are also kind and welcoming. They have a wonderful staff at Harvest. I've attended churches in the Sacramento area for many years, including one I attended for over 11 years, and never once did I feel as welcomed and embraced as I did at Harvest Church. What really stood out to me is how much this church pours into the community. From grief counseling, marriage classes, care giver support classes to mission trip opportunities, you can truly see their heart for serving others and giving back. I believe that is exactly what a church should do, not only receive, but also help, support, and love the community around them. I highly recommend Harvest Church to anyone looking for a place to worship, grow spiritually, and genuinely feel at home. I'm so thankful that my family found this beautiful church so close to our home.

Let me remind you I am Christian but I try not judge anyone or make assumptions about others as I have learned you never know the path they have walked or what is actually going on in their life. My fiancée and I have attended this church in person about 5 or 6 times in the past couple of years and every time we're so uncomfortable every time we walk in. I have not been able to attend church every Sunday due to my work until this last year work has changed and we could attend in person but then COVID. But the looks and the negativity these people give off when we walk in makes us want to run and hide every time. (Definitely the opposite of welcoming) So instead we would watch Sunday service on our local channel they had or stream them to our tv. My family has known the pastor and his wife since my grandma started taking us as kids. He was even the pastor for my fathers funeral when I was 12. I have been baptized and saved at this church so it means a lot to me. I have never attended another church. Recently my fiancée and I decided to get married and wanted Pastor Rich to marry us. So my mom reached out to the pastors wife and received no response so she reached out to the pastor himself. He had the nerve to say I don't marry anyone who does not attend church. I'm sorry but just because I don't attend in person how do you know I don't attend service streaming to my tv from my home. I now work in emergency services and with COVID no I'm not going to attend in person. And why jump to conclusions? Instead why not test us and ask us whAt was discussed in church on certain Sunday's, as I take notes every Sunday. I have recently wrote a message myself to the pastor which he has till not read it. But that's is ok! My fiancée and soon to be husband will find a new church and a new pastor. If you are looking for a judgmental church full of snobs this is perfect for you!

It would be hard to attend a service at this church and not feel the love in that place. It's real! After attending for almost a year now, I feel that I'm part of the community and look forward to getting more involved. God bless you in your search for the right community of believers and in seeking God in your life.

Inside the building, there's a café selling pastries and specialty coffee with comfortable seating areas. Restrooms were clean, bright, and spacious with plenty of stalls. The women's restroom also includes a nursing/changing room for mothers and babies. The worship center itself has very high ceilings and feels bright, airy, clean, and well air-conditioned without being overly cold. The church appears to have a very organized and fully functional volunteer team including worship, musicians, ushers, kids ministry, and even a rotating sign language interpretation team for both worship and sermon. Worship music is modern contemporary Christian music (Elevation Worship, etc.). A nice touch was that after each song, they displayed the song title and credited the artist on screen. They provide printed sermon notes, which helps the congregation stay engaged and take notes during teaching. On the back side are weekly Life Group discussion questions and prayer note sections for the upcoming week. At the end of service, there is a prayer team (around 10 people at the front) available for anyone wanting personal prayer. This week they also launched church merchandise: hats for $20 and t-shirts for $16. The sermon itself was Bible-based and taught in depth. Their Life Groups include categories for adults, marriage & family, men, women, and elders. A couple areas for improvement: - I didn't notice any traffic coordinators in the parking lot. - The OHP/lyrics coordinator missed several song lyric transitions during worship, which made it harder for some people unfamiliar with the songs to continue singing along smoothly. Overall, the church felt welcoming, organized, and focused on both worship and biblical teaching.
