I am an alum and a parent of three sons that are either at Ignatius now or are themselves alums…read more All I can say is that there is no place like it anywhere nearby (perhaps simply anywhere). It is a truly unique and wonderful place. I am saddened and surprised by the reports of bullying I see in one of the posts. I can say that in my four years I NEVER saw any bullying. I ask my sons about it periodically and they tell me the same thing. Honestly, probably a sampling error in both instances. It probably happens from time to time. It is not a perfect place. I can say that if it happens it is not widespread or one of my three sons would have seen it somewhere, some time. I am sad to hear about it and my heart goes out to anyone who has been mistreated or made to feel unwelcome. There is no place for that in any community, of faith, of learning .. of anything. It just has not been a part of my experience at the school. So, what has been my experience? Good and caring faculty and staff genuinely interested in not only educating but inspiring students. The school is focused on the care of the individual person and launching Men for Others into the world. Ignatius is not interested in their students and the community just being ok. Ignatius wants its students and its community to be excellent. The connection to the near West Side is palpable. Students are encouraged - and to a certain extent required - to engage in service in the community. They are expected to invite the 'real world' into their lives and think critically about and pray for it. They are encouraged to respond to the 'real world' constructively and actively. When I attended freshman orientation for my oldest son the principal said *you give us the boy, we will give you the man. " I can say that Ignatius has delivered on that promise, contributing in a huge way to molding my sons into good, Christian men. If you are looking to continue (or to experience for the first time) Catholic education done right, send your son here. You will not be disappointed.

I just wish I'd understood that plenty of local schools are so much better. Ignatius routinely employs uncertified alumni with little experience. Two teachers and a coach were emotionally and psychologically abusive. I was a year younger than all the other students which doesn't help in this toxic environment. Homophobia and racism are endemic. Zero science during freshman year, zero opportunity to socialize with girls. Ignatius now offers a health science mentoring and internship program, probably because they noticed very few of us smarties were prepared for medical studies. They had to improve their game given the exhorbitant tuition and inferior curriculum compared to good public schools in the area that have four years of science, superior arts programs, healthier culture and don't subject young boys to four years of mandatory religious indoctrination. They actually told us there was zero networking for medical school. It seems like efforts were made to improve, but I would never send my son's here or indeed to any "Catholic" school after my experience. If your parents hold you back a year or two in one of the local "Catholic" grade schools, play football and the administration will shepherd you with better instructors and manipulate your record to improve your GPA.

First off, my family lived across the street from this gorgeous church in the late 1980s / 1990s. My parents still own my family's 4th generation upholstery business down the street. This church is a local landmark and icon of the community and has breathtaking architecture. Although I do not attend Catholic mass anymore, this church and the people that work there still visit my mother and have connections to the family. It is a non-ethnic church, as my mother's family grew up in Slavic Village and attended the Polish St Stanislaus, and then my grandmother was a founding member of the Westlake Catholic Church St Ladislas. My grandfather was Romanian Orthodox, but grew up for a brief time near the Lorain Historic District / Cudell in a mini Romanian community down the street from this church. This church has served generations of Clevelanders and its different ethnicities that came together. Very hopeful for the neighborhood and the economic development taking place in the area recently. I see the teachers dont care as much as Cleveland schools. For instance your child better be exceptionally well behaved or Mark's will go on for behavior problems. Teachers teach and are strict with their lesson plans and if children need more work in one area teachers just keep moving. Now the "community " schools are public so it will be interesting to see what this brings this school system. Its also interesting what a year makes, my child was in this school with a good principal decent teachers this next year a new principal and new teachers, hmmm... that should tell you something, when the good principal that made it concern to know each kid and some decent teachers left.

This review is for St. Charles Borromeo School, not the church. I mean, who reviews churches?…read more I grew up across the street from St. Charles and I've watched the school grow and change. In fact, the selling of our house TO St. Charles actually helped them grow, in a way. They used the space where I lived for 24 years to build a much needed parking lot. While I miss seeing my old house, I get to park where my house once stood and walk through what was once my back yard. The house on Alber behind where mine used to be on Wilber still stands as does the oak tree that was planted when I was a young kid. I can see just how much that oak tree has grown and it reminds me of how much life changes, for better or worse. I did not attend St. Charles. Instead, I went to Renwood. But I'm happy that I am able to send my kids to St. Charles because I believe it is the or one of the best elementary schools in Parma. The principal, teachers, and other staff are excellent. If only the catholic high schools had similar tuition rates! The annual St. Charles Carnival has been part of my life as long as I can remember. I live just three streets away now and I visit St. Charles more than ever due to my children's involvement with the school. The CYO sports teams and coaches are excellent. I didn't realize I could have played for St. Charles CYO when I was a kid even though I didn't go to St. Charles. Instead, I waited for 7th grade, which is when Parma City Schools allow students to participate in sports. St. Charles starts track in first grade and many other sports in third grade. If only we'd known, I definitely would have played for the school directly across the street.
