So much project inspiration! The owner of this adorable shop hand-selects the fabrics at a fabric show and oh my, does she have an eye for drool-worthy, high-quality fabric! They offer loads of classes and I recommend signing up for their newsletter - they don't publish it annoyingly often and when they do, it includes a list of all upcoming events. I also love that they have a cafe side to the craftiness, because all good projects are backed with a hearty dose of super-human powers... I mean, caffeine. read more

I'm in love with this fabric and yarn shop. It's one of the best I've been to. They carry some really hard-to-find fabrics like Kokka, Lecien, Heather Ross and Denyse Schmidt. As far as I know of, they're the only shop in Iowa to carry Kokka. They also have ribbons, trims, sewing notions and fabulous sewing patterns from Heather Bailey, Amy Butler, Valori Wells and more. They also have a bunch of yummy yarns, but since I'm primarily a sewer and quilter, I rarely stray from the fabric section in the front of the store. Not only do they have great fabrics and yarns, but they also offer sewing, knitting, crocheting, screenprinting and other crafty classes in a room at the back of the store. Plus, they serve drinks and yummy baked goods at a cute little counter. What more could you ask for? I love everything about this place. The atmosphere feels very cozy right when you walk into the store. The vibe is fun and creative. They have a couch and chairs if you just want to sit around and work on your latest knitting project. The two owners, Alisa and Codi are super friendly, too. This little shop is a treasure. It reminds me of a really hip shop that you might find in a much larger city. My only complaint is that I wish the shop had way more fabrics. Being a fabric addict, I can never get enough! read more

This is the premiere yarn shop in Iowa City, with out all the fuss and snobbishness of other posh yarn stores that I am used to dealing with (in California). The yarn shop is quaint and tidy, with a room sectioned off for yarn, and another area for sewing/ fabric supplies. The cashier's counter also acts as coffee bar with some baked goodies thrown in.The design of the shop is very streamlined, and very easy to maneuver around. The customer service here is also unbeatable. Two years ago my husband and his granny went in to the store to buy a few skeins of 'souvenirs' for me. The following year, my husband and I visited the store and the kind lady working actually remembered my husband and his granny from the previous year. When we move back to Iowa City, I will definitely be funneling all of my extra cash in this store. read more

The wife needed yarn to complete the v-neck sweater vest she is knitting with Andy Kauffman's face on it for me, so we cruised over to Home Ec. Who knew that such an amazing boutique existed in the Iowa City area? Their fabric selection is the hippest with truly unique patterns, woolen goodies as far as your one good eye could see and an espresso bakery counter. All staffers here are helpful, smiley, more than willing to tell you what product is available and toss a compliment or two your way. Visit Home Ec often, your newly sewn slipcovers will thank you. They have a great selection of yarns and unique how-to books in the back, fabulous fabrics up front and a craft room with sewing machines and tables you can use for a small fee. The shopkeepers are always super-friendly and I love that they serve cupcakes and tea (a perfect combo!) There is also a little sitting area where knitting and crafting groups can meet. I've been a fan of Home Ec from their very beginnings on Linn Street. Cori, Karen and all the rest are helpful, friendly and welcoming. The biggest complaint I hear is that there's not enough yarn. If they don't have what you're looking for, they will most likely be able to order it for you. And they're happy to help. Check out their new place on Jefferson Street. Knitting + coffee. What could be cozier? My sister lives down the block from this place, and we stopped by this afternoon for cappuccino. It didn't take long before I was mesmerized by their fantastic yarn. A warm and fuzzy fuchsia and lime green variety convinced me that it's time to pick up my knitting needles and try to actually finish something. First item on tomorrow's agenda: return to Home Ec. and make sure no one buys it before I do. Second item: see if I remember how to knit. read more

Great shop that has a studio space you can use for all your projects, including sewing machines. There is a great mix of fabrics for those of us who don't use yarn. I can always find something that I want to take home. Plus the staff is very welcoming and friendly. Nice job! read more

I am a knitter, not a quilter, so my review focuses only on the yarn portion of the store. I am almost always disappointed by the yarn selection when I visit Home Ec. If you like Cascade 220 (which they carry in abundance) or Malabrigo (which the other Iowa City yarn shops do not stock), this is your place. If you don't, odds are good that you won't find what you are looking for. I am often surprised by the limited selection of colors, textures, and oddly out-of-season fibers. It's a cute and cozy shop, and I do love that I can get some coffee and sit down to knit for a while, but after going here regularly for four years, I cannot shake the feeling that this shop could be so much more. That said, the knitting pattern selection is marvelous. I have found some very fun patterns for hats there, especially. They also carry a pretty good range of notions, including some excellent interchangeable needle kits. Overall, I feel that for the knitting/crocheting community, this shop is a mixed bag. Worth checking to see if they have what you need, but you'll probably walk out without buying anything about half the time. read more

Darling place! I got a gift card to here for Christmas and it was one of the best I've ever received. Granted, plenty of it was spent on hot chocolate and biscotti at the little cafe, but thats not the point. The staff are so helpful and knowledgable. There is a wide variety of classes offered that catered to different levels of skill- I am not artistically talented at all- but the staff managed to help me create projects that did not look like a 3rd grade art project. There is a gorgeous selection of fabrics and yarns and the atmosphere at Home Ec. is cozy and inspiring. They also sell some merchandise that would make great gifts. read more

Imagine a store where the staff treat every project you want to start as the most important one ever. Then imagine that they have stuff in stock that is so beautiful, you want to start five more projects. Then find out how many workshops they have to teach you new skills or how to improve the ones you have. The whole time, you feel like you're among friends in a homey place. I love this place! You can get quilting fabric, pick up yarn, take a class, or just get a cookie and coffee. They have gorgeous materials and are very helpful.
