I was first introduced to swanky Home House in 2005 when I was living in London by a former butler of this refined establishment which serves as a private club that is as well a hotel and restaurant for discerning travelers. Designed for Elizabeth, the Countess of Home in 1777, Home House stands as one of Scottish neo-classical architect Robert Adam's finest examples of a smart London Townhouse. Each room carries the distinctive Adam trademarks of balance and color, and the spiraling Italian marble staircase -- one of two imported from Italy by Adam to England (the other stands in Old College at the University of Edinburgh) with a glass domed ceiling creates the feel of stately elegance for both casual and formal affairs. Each room at Home House has been meticulously restored (not remodeled) to original Adam plan, while many have been updated to provide all the amenities expected in a fine private British club. The garden patio is covered with tents on humid summer days, my favorite spot for a visit to Home House and time of year. To be biased, with all that said, my review of Home House has to do with its Cheese Burgers. Yes, Home House could have finished the multi-million pound restoration and turned its nose up towards visitors with boring bloating menu items, but instead these wonderful people chose to let their hair down and provide a menu and atmosphere that is fun, welcoming, and affordable. The finest Cheeseburger in all of London (and this is coming from a guy from San Francisco used to Niman Ranch Beef) served on a buttered and toasted bun with carmelised onions and a dash of Grey Poupon Mustard -- delicious! The chips (french fries) were lightly salted and the service from the bar was impeccable. The full bar, wine and beer list and appetizers ensure that everyone can find themselves at home. I think Home House is a bit of a quandary -- it attracts those who are looking to be noticed, and those like myself, who come for the ambience and amenities. It is one of my favorite places in all of the world. For a study of Adam neo-classical architecture while dining on London's best cheeseburger, Home House is not to be missed.

Before I went to Home House, I was totally against the idea of paying membership fee to join a private club.

The crowd was, obviously, all students except for one bachelorette party, so everyone was have great time. Aside from good music, nothing stood out too much. Coat check was poorly handled; the line took an hour and the girl often gave back the wrong coats only to have to dig through and try her luck until she found the right one. Also, I'm pretty sure the drinks were heavily watered down, such an annoyance. It's not bad for a night out, but if the cover is expensive, don't bother.

Honestly, pretty disappointing experience…read more First off, you have to pay a cover just to get in, which would be fine if the experience matched--but it didn't. Once inside, it was packed and really hot (especially compared to how cold it was outside), so naturally we had jackets with us. There were stools around the club and we put our jackets on them like many other people were doing. A female security staff member came over multiple times telling us we couldn't put our jackets there, even though others were doing the exact same thing and we were right next to it. The way she handled it came off unnecessarily rude and aggressive, which really killed the vibe for us. On top of that, the bathroom attendant was basically pressuring people to tip just for handing out paper towels, which felt uncomfortable and awkward. Overall, between the inconsistent rules, the attitude from staff, and the pressure for tips, it just wasn't an enjoyable experience. Definitely expected better.

Looking for obscenely decadent late night fun?…read more The Box is over the top London at its finest. It's part night-club, part Burlesque show and part weird sex performance theatre. Go with an open mind, a full wallet, and a willingness to drink heavily and you will have a rocking time. Yes you will see lots of oiled up naked women dancing above bathtubs, pre-op transvestites doing unmentionables with bottles of champagnes, and perhaps a royal or two. The Box is somewhere between ridiculously and absurdly expensive---try £3000 for a table on a weekend night. However, this gets you into a jumping venue with a great dj and of course multiple live "performances." The happening and surprisingly friendly crowd is definitely willing to party and dance the night away. Tip try not to get a front row table for the performances---its akin to the "splash zone" at Seaworld, only here there is a very good chance you will either get covered in baby powder cocaine or soiled with back-washed champagne that came out of a non-mouth orifice---yeah, don't ask!
