I have met few people who react differently than "It must be very hard to work there - I could…read morenever do that." A hospice, for those who do not know, is a non-profit organization that specializes in the passing of the dying, providing the care and compassion and medical attention to those within six months of death. During my final two years of high school, when every student was given the week off to perform 90 or more hours of service, most chose to care for children at day cares or to make meals for the homeless or to sort clothes at a drive. I chose to work at a hospice with my best friend, and it was one of the most powerful experiences of my life, thanks to Good Shepherd, one of the nation's finest hospices (determined from working at other hospices in New York City, none of which can even compare to the staffing and funds of this top of the line Kansas City hospice.) Doreen, the volunteer Coordinator, was organized and efficient in directing us throughout the week-long training seminar on death and dying and our role as not only a volunteer for the families and the loved ones about to pass on, but also as a confidante, a care-taker, a listener, a rock through the sometimes traumatic moments. We were trained to alleviate as best we could - a roll I never imagined myself in, yet, a roll so necessary to so many area families. I had no initial idea as to the impact this hospice has made in the lives of others, and to this day, if ever I mention it to a friend or a distant somebody I know, I am always surprised by the reactions of those whose loved ones have been provided for by this hospice. Good Shepherd is not affiliated with any religion, allowing for the spiritual needs of the dying to be met with whatever faith or non-faith they wish to pass in. The women and men (mostly women) who work here are the most uplifting people I have ever met. Everyday, they held a morning meeting (often passing around muffins someone had freshly baked) to discuss the amazing progress of some of the patients, or to discuss any concerns, any hopes, any fears felt while working. The volunteers are treated as members of the working staff, and can participate in this meeting. The freedom that I had as a volunteer made me realize the great responsibility that Good Shepherd entrusts to its volunteers in general to be able to visit area patients and meet their needs with the utmost attention and respect. My friend and I worked daily after the initial morning meeting, making home visits and nursing home visits to those under Hospice watch - and most the time, the elderly were sleeping when we came in, to whom we would ensure they were comfortable and well taken care of by those on the clock (nursing homes can be so crudely kept in some counties, but that is another horrible truth I will not tell today.) Sometimes we would play music or read stories or eat with them or listen to them talk about the war or their late husbands, or their children's children - often times the stories were incredibly enlightening and worth much more than the thirty minutes spent listening. To those whom have never considered spending time in this way in your life - I would reconsider. It is not a morbid experience, working for Good Shepherd, it is an organization that has maintained the dignity and grace of the elderly through their last weeks on earth. It is eye-opening and necessary and there isn't a week that goes by that I do not think back to my time spent with the elderly of Kansas City preparing to pass on to the next life.

One girl, Carrie, commented, she did not know why Harbor Hospice Doctor was even giving my mom pain medication. To which I had to explain the illness. Thank goodness Harbor Hospice Dr. knows about the illness. Sarah, who was our main contact person...she failed to do paperwork when my mother went to 5 day respite stay (to try to convince my mom this would be better for her). Because Harbor did not fill out medication paperwork, the nursing home could not give my mom any medications. (Pain meds every 6 hours and my mom alerted me at 7:30 in the morning-- in pain). I changed hospice companies and now, Harbor hospice is lying to me about filling out paperwork for moms LTC insurance. I was told harbor did not have a corporate phone number. I googled it and found it. Now dealing with corporate to get paperwork needed. I do not recommend harbor hospice. They might be ok if your parent has 1 week to live, but find another company if longer.

For me and our family, for the hardest day we could imagine, this place felt as close to home as possible. Not at all like a medical facility, it felt like a grand and warm home, with outdoor spaces, a welcoming great room and privacy for every family-I never saw any other family though I knew they were there. Admitting team was welcoming and got mom settled and us familiarized with the facility. As COVID guidelines were in place but moms passing was imminent and we had out of town family flying in to say goodbye, they came up with solutions to follow guidelines while letting family see her. The day nurse was not great. She honestly shouldn't work here. Luckily we only had her for a few hours before shift change. Mom felt cold, part of the body shutting down we learned, so we covered her and the day nurse uncovered her and said her temp was too high. She was not compassionate or sensitive to the family, and coarsely admonished us to read a handout on the steps of passing when we asked a question (we were not provided the handout when we arrived but she brought us one). Our night nurse and assistant were great, they checked in often, and even their tone and demeanor felt warm and comforting and they explained what to expect in a caring and compassionate manner. They helped turn and check in on mom and when mom did pass helped give us privacy while supporting us at the same time. They were truly angels.

There are no words to fully describe the experience we had with Good Shepherd Hospice. We brought…read morein Good Shepherd Hospice to help my mom at her memory care facility in December of 2022. They gave so much love, attention and care to her for the last 13 months of her life. I always thought hospice was only for end of life care, which I quickly learned is not the case. It is a completely underutilized service that we pay into and it was priceless for my mom and our family. The nurses we had, Laura and Bridget, and the chaplain, John, were incredible in every way. I received phone calls on a bi-weekly basis, sometimes weekly, to give me a report on her mood, her physical activity and any concerns they had during their visit with her. If they felt a change was needed for her, whether with medication, the type of bed she had, her needing a walker to help get around or a wheelchair at the very end of her life, they made those changes immediately. They sat with us and her until her very last breath. I can't recommend Good Shepherd enough!!

I subsequently contacted them to begin hospice services. Even after three different calls, and promises for action, I never heard back from their admissions team. They simply did not respond at all. I subsequently contacted a competitor, and within 24 hours, my father was receiving excellent care. If care for your loved one is important to you, you may need to call elsewhere.
