Beautiful Place. I booked a tour for my family online. They offer tours at 9:00, 11:00 & 1:00. Our tour guide Anthony was truly amazing. He shared his story and his journey that eventually lead him to Homeboy after being paroled. The staff here is all soo friendly and just eager to help in anyway. Right when you set foot on their property, you are transported to a land where complete strangers will offer to help carry your heavy bag or to help you find your way. The way everyone helps and works together is quite amazing. There is parking in their lot and on the street. With the help of one of the Homeboy associate, they even helped me parallel park on the street. When entering Homeboy, it is bustling with excitement. There was beautiful artwork and you can also see them making bakery goods. If you can, volunteer and support this organization. Everything about our visit was wonderful. As others have said, before you even step inside, people are helping you out. We had a great experience trying the coffee, danishes and croissants before our tour. all were delicious. Then Steve A took us on an amazing tour of the Homeboy Facilities. We had the opportunity to view the bakery, tour the offices, and he even shared his story with us. When you go, try to get Steve as your tour guide! He was the best tour guide we could have asked for! But everyone here was awesome. The guys in the gift shop, the servers, it was such a great experience. Love this place. Came to visit a few years back after hearing about how great it was at my school, I was interested in getting some tattoos removed and was told they do tattoo removals. I showed up one day and visited their cafe and man was it delicious! I had a sandwich and it came with a salad, both were bomb! I proceeded to start my tattoo removal sessions and it went by pretty quick, I came a few more times but life started lifing. I wonder if I ever come back will I be able to continue the sessions. I sent them an email February 28 for tattoo removal & I been calling multiple times trying to get in hold of someone and No one answers, it just goes to voicemail and it hangs up because their voicemail is full. Then I called the main reception for help. This person said he would have someone call me back. No one has called me. I have a buddy that knows a female friend who went to homeboy industries to remove a tattoo of her ex boyfriend name.... It's messed up they helped this girl over a that tattoo and I have a lot of tattoos around my neck, head & face I need to remove. Visiting Homeboy Industries was a highlight of my trip while I was on vacation in LA!!! We started with morning meeting, which was so inspiring. Then on to a long and informational tour led by one of the homeboys. He shared his own story and many others and showed us all around and explained how the program works. Homeboy was created by Fr Greg Boyle who is a modern day hero. Check him out on YouTube or read his books! Then we headed over to Home Girl Cafe for a delicious breakfast and got a bunch of delicious baked goods to take home. Then on to the silkscreen store to get my current favorite comfy Homeboy Industries hoodie, long sleeve T-shirt and Fr Greg's latest book. Service was great. It feels good to spend money here because you know it's going to good use to help former gang members make a better life for themselves and their families. Love this place! Love the ministry! I unfortunately have been attempting to reach the tattoo removal line for weeks. I have not been able to get through no matter what time of day I call. I call at 8:30am, 8:45 am, all throughout the day. It's really sad because I may not be the only one who is reaching out and no one answers. That can be really devastating to most seeking help. I know this organization hires a lot of probationers and parolees who may be using their job there as a facade to cover up ill intentions. My wife and I were in Monrovia last night and stopped by to pick up some pastries at their location in the farmers market. We indulged this morning and I don't know if I have ever had a better carrot cake. Moist tender flavorful. It was perfect! My wife absolutely loved their coffee cake and it was a great way to start the morning. We are looking forward to having a sandwich later on in the day with their sourdough bread. I was in the area for a weekend trip, and - having read the book Tattoos on the Heart by Father Greg Boyle - wanted to see the place for myself. I arrived right after the cafe had closed for the day, but their door was open so i walked in. The staff welcomed me but said they were closed, then promptly offered me free pastries and a smoothie! They were so gracious and kind, apologizing profusely for being closed. It was ok tho - there honestly is not too much to see in the cafe, but i got the gist. It seems that Father Boyle, Jesuit priest & founder of Homeboy Industries, feels that it is important to rehabilitate people who, for whatever reason, have found it difficult to become a productive member in our community. Whether they may have previous drug addictions, run ins with the law, made bad life decisions, if they are ready & willing to receive help, coming to Homeboys is a good place to get aid & understanding since many of the workers & volunteers also have had similar experiences. We were fortunate to be able to take a tour of the facilities and came out very impressed that there is help for those in need, but in a positive way to get them ready & proud enough to lead productive independent lives. Of course, this process is not achieved in a short time, but the tough love nurturing style of Homeboys is a lot better than just throwing released inmates, psychiatric patients, drug dependent people out onto the streets where there are little places to go to get the repairative help that is so needed. All this does is for them to go back to their old ways with their lives spiraling ever downward. Ms. K. was our tour guide, and she came from the school of hard knocks where she was a drug runner for gangs. There was always the fear of being caught by law enforcement or being ambushed by rival gangs. It was an unstable life especially for a single mother who felt she couldn't supply a safe, stable life for her children. Finally realizing she was jeopardizing herself & her children, Ms. K went to Homeboy for help in getting out of crime & into reconstructing her life along productive lines. I applaud her goal. *This review is for the LAX location* I had quite possibly the worst bagel and cream cheese I've ever had in my life. Correction... It was the worst bagel & cream cheese I've TRIED to eat in my entire life. I asked for it toasted, but whatever they did to it, it turned it into an expensive $6 ROCK. Seriously, by the time I sat in my seat on the plane, I had two halves of a bagel that were so hard, I would probably have broken a tooth trying to eat that overcooked, over-microwaved, hard as a rock, piece of dough, they passed off as a "bagel." Yesterday a friend and I went to Homeboy Industries in LA for lunch at the Homegirl Cafe. Homeboy was started by Father Gregory Boyle in 1988 to help former gang members and previously incarcerated persons. They help redirect their lives and become contributing members of their families and communities. They offer job skills training, education, tattoo removal and legal and mental health services. They operate the cafe, cooking, service, and busing. The food is fantastic. Check out the menu on their website. They also have a bakery and merchandise store. This is SUCH an excellent cause! I read up on their organization after stopping by their bakery downtown LA and fell in love with this cause and what they stand for. Father Greg Boyle started Honeboy Industries in the 80's and has helped so many gang members get off the streets and find real jobs and learn how to live regular lives again. Working at their bakery, farmers markets, events and fundraisers, a great cause to support, made me happy to see how successful they are. read more

I took a tour of Homeboy Industries last week, and was pretty blown away by the mission and ethos of this organization. If you need any of its services, knock on its doors. If you have some money lying around, for it over. Homeboy provides paths to employment for gang members and convicted felons, a segment of the population that is too often left to fend for itself after it's coughed up out of the prison system. Ex-cons don't have the best employment options, and without jobs, recidivism is often the most salient available life choice. Homeboy offers job training as well as community services like Narcotics/Alcoholics/Gangmembers Anonymous. It's an entire organization dedicated to helping people make productive decisions by giving them the resources they need. There's an 18-month wage-paying program that includes in-depth training, therapy, and classes. This program is selective and requires a pretty dedicated commitment to wholesome living, but most of Homeboy's services are available to anyone who asks. My tour guide Ricardo was four months into his stint in the program. Mine was his first tour, and he did an excellent job taking me through the Homeboy headquarters. He told me his story and said, tearing up, that meeting Father Greg and joining Homeboy was the best thing that had ever happened to him. I believed him. Thanks to Cheryl K. for setting me up on this tour, and to Ricardo for being a great guide. Everyone at Homeboy really deserves some serious applause. It's a great organization that fills a wide gap in our society's needs. If you're at all interested, the tours are open to public. Menu is kind of limited. I had tacos and my friend ordered the chilaquiles. It was good, especially the chilaquiles: super crispy chips, fluffy eggs and fresh queso. My carne Asada tacos were alright but it needed something. Didn't come with any sides or even salsa on the side. The meat was tender but on the borderline of being bland. Service was slow. I know that's their whole shtick giving convicts a chance to get work experience. To be fair, they were super friendly but you can tell there was some on the job training. Didn't fully know the menu and took forever to get the check. Overall meal was ok but nothing blew me away. I wish there were options with more meat. read more

Ths week I attended a Benefit Fundraiser at the Ford Amphitheater for Homeboy Industries. It included an enlightening preview of a documentary called G-Dog, a film chronicling father Greg Boyles life work with at-risk and disadvantaged youths, a film about gang members seeking peace, acceptance and a way to function in society. Attending USC and living in Southern Calfornia for 20+ years, the presence of gangs is always around. However, I am not going to lie, it is only a problem if you are there, present, and dealing with it. The rest of us, myself included, have away of compartmentalizing it and filing this fact away somewhere under "bad" and "never happening to me". I hope everyone gets to see this movie, see it from their eyes. Johnny Vatos' Oingo Boingo Party Band brought back a lot of fond memories of my younger years. It made for a very nice evening under the stars. I wish this event could have been a little more successful. As just a consumer and not a person that had anything to gain or lose for this event, I wish they had tried to sell me more. I wish the had made deal with the Ford to have more of their Homegirl Cafe food there. I wish they had a bigger selection of bakery goods. The chocolate chip cookies were exquisite and assorted dessert dish was delectable. They definitely could have charged more. Lastly, I wish they had advertised this as a bigger event, and attracted...or invited...a few big names with more giving checkbooks.
