Where do I begin with this place..THEY HAVE BED BUGS AND ROACHES for starters. They keep all of the families in the filthy gymnasium in bunk beds and give them dirty linen to lay on the dirty mattresses. Some of the staff & security are rude and condescending, they speak to you like you are less than a person and with arrogance. When I spoke up about the bed bugs and roaches after my child had an outbreak from the unclean linen they quickly whisked us upstairs to a quarantine room no explanation and just shut us in there with only a case of water. There was no staff and the caseworker they had me with bullshitted me each time I asked for quarters for laundry or essentials for my little ones, it was always "We'll do it tomorrow." A kind person had given me and my little ones a couple bags full of clothing, the security told me I could keep the bags of clothes by their table because we had bags we needed to get upstairs and we'd come back down and get the bags with clothes after. We came back down stairs and they had set all of the given bags of clothes outside and allowed people on the streets to take them Including a new pair of shoes that were for my oldest daughter. When I brought it up I was ignored and the staff was very nonchalant and insensitive about it. While they make portray this place like it's the best place to go to receive help and resources and have Bible scriptures posted on the walls inside, these people lack the morality to stand behind what this program is supposed to be about. Especially for people like us who came from DV and being confined and restricted, you come here and there is no love, no understanding, no respect and they'll do their best to strip you of whatever dignity you try to have. I wouldn't recommend this program unless you desperately need somewhere to go and wouldn't mind being treated like a peon and lied to and manipulated constantly.

people are friendly, but sometimes the staff is how do I say it very eager to tell me I cat do something! I turned my music on I was told I could not listen to it, I was told no I could not sit there , No I could not buy something from the vending machine, I wanted water to take my medicine with. I was told no I could not get something from the vending machine when I wanted a snack because the worker was mopping the floor. He had already mopped by the machine I would not have been in his way. I told the lady in the office I needed to charge my phone she shook her head No. They did not issue me a security badge ,however they took my picture. They seem to want some kind of Authority over me, and that is why they are trying to reprimand me, a control thing? power struggle? I am very easy to get a long with but I feel I am due some respect! The same respect as others here. My preferred name is Queen Mary Pitt, which I am using professionally, I could make them address me as such instead of Mam , Or I could ask that I be called Princess since I do have that Royal Title from King Charles lll, I am Royalty.

This shelter is one of the worst I have ever been to. A lot back story me and my wife lost our home a few months back after my wife had a car accident. Since then we have been in a motel then the union rescue mission Let me tell u I didn't expect greatness when I got here but I did expect them to have some kind of program or something to help your transition into permanent housing since being here we have not gotten any help for housing we've had to outsource looking towards other programs to help us. On top of that this shelter says it runs a christian-based program how could they be running a christian-based program when they talk to you so disrespectfully they treat you like you are lesser than them and they house u in the most disgusting building there is no manner no cleanliness it's infested with cocker roaches and the staff do nothing about and will even tries to have you kicked out for complaining so much about it. There staff rather flirt with the single mothers than do there actual job And the old lady miss Thelma is so rude and disrespectful she will lie just to see you kicked out if she doesn't like you. Just stay away for this shelter if you can And please report them if u see or hear and abuse

I am a volunteer for Union Rescue Mission and I am currently a participant in it's inaugural 5K Walk. They do their very best to assist the community and take good care of everyone, including volunteers and those in need. They strive to fight against homelessness and truly do what they can to provide hope for those experiencing homelessness. God bless URM and may it continue improving lives.

Union Rescue Mission does a great job helping mothers and their children in their Hope Gardens Family Center. I have experienced first hand all the great efforts they make to help them. They not only give them a place to stay but also enroll them in financial classes, parenting classes. To help them get back on their feet. Most of the ladies that graduate the program never return back to the program, they come back to share their stories and help motivate other ladies who are currently in the program, to give them hope and keep them motivated. I have never experienced homelessness but yet I feel moved and inspired by their stories. You can find some of their stories on YouTube, URM Stories of skid row. I am glad I was able to witness first hand their awesome work. You can help them also by donating items to them. Personal hygiene items are in high demand. I do not work for URM, I am a security contractor for their Hope Gardens Facility. Call them, ask for a tour. You will be moved and you are going to want to be involved.

Volunteered here on Thursday (thanks Mai!) for Project Homeless Connect. As I walked through the building to the sign-in table I looked around - clean, but definitely spartan. Almost dorm (or maybe prison?) style. There were plenty of people laying around in the medical area, presumably waiting to be seen and even more in front of a big television in what looked to be a lobby. Outside there were homeless hanging out and several times I saw a guy take to the corner railings and do push-ups. The whole outside smelled like urine, I just can't even imagine my life in that world and I feel that is part of the reason it's so necessary to help out. These people are THERE and they need help. I got my t-shirt identifying me as a volunteer and for the first forty-five minutes helped escort various people to the different booths that had been set up along the street - here folks could get an ID, get some medical attention, get bus tokens and even free books. There was a very long line for the lunch bag of a hot dog, some chips and OJ. I gave mine away. As it turned out we had many more escorts (very heartening) and some folks didn't need/want help so I set out to find somewhere else to help out. I landed at the coffee station, which was the first stop for the homeless before they signed in to get tickets for food, etc. They were letting five in at a time from a very long line down 5th St. People were able to get some coffee and then head on to the next line before they got to the service booths - "organized chaos", as one volunteer put it. What really got me where the other guys who were helping out with me. They were both guys who actually lived at the mission and were going through "the program." I talked with them each a bit about their lives and was just struck at the survival instinct of a human and again how important it is that we help each other. Here were two guys on either side of me, living in 12-person bunk bed rooms and stashing away food and goodies given out because they didn't even have enough. They went to meetings, had a chaplain who was basically their boss and were waiting for the opportunity to get far enough along in the program to go out and get a job. From some of their words I remembered that misfortunes can happen to anyone at any time and you are only a few steps away from a completely different way of life. I even learned you have to pay now to get a GED. These guys were surviving though and looking to the future, they were looking to have a future. And what has stayed with me as I watched person after person come get coffee was this - they are pretty lucky themselves right now. Now that's sad. I walked away from the tent after all the coffee had been served and heard "thank you" and "God bless" so many times it made me embarrassed. So now I say "thank you" to all those that passed through that line on Thursday. Thank you for reminding me (and for being so cool.) I am one lucky chick.

I had never heard of this place before but it's truly an amazing place! The name is very fitting for the amazing work that is done here. Their store was filled with brand new items (many popular brands) fitting every style and size. They also include necessities such as backpacks, shoes, toilet paper, etc and the rule is YOU CAN TAKE AS MUCH AS YOU NEED! Usually there's a limit but not here, they provide you with trash bags and you can take as much as needed. They also have an area for groceries, toys, hot food, and so much more! It was truly amazing working here and seeing so many families being helped. There were so many volunteers and so much resources being passed out, I've never see anything like it. I recommend this place for anyone who is having a tough time, facing homelessness, job loss, etc to seek this place out. They also help with finding housing and schooling. Such a valuable place to the city of Los Angeles!
