My grandson, Benny, started art classes at Hongyun this school year (3rd grade). Our goal was not for him to become a great artist but to learn sufficient skills to independently work on school projects and illustrations needed for humanities and language arts assignments. Of course, we also hoped that he enjoys art for his own amusement and expression. Hongyun has exceeded our expectation in every aspect! Benny's teacher as well as the staff provide a nurturing environment for him to explore and learn. Benny has also developed the confidence and love to express himself through art: drawing, painting, comics, and clay sculpture. Drawing for school projects and assignments is no longer stressful for him and us! We are very grateful for the positive impacts Hongyun's art classes have to our family. She is the most appreciative of the teachers who help them understand art principles and fundamental art skills. She said the teachers and the environment make students like her feel very comfortable. You can see her latest artwork, which is herself in 4 different styles. They challenge the kids to reach the levels above and teach social skills. My daughter studied for AP Drawing at Hongyun Art from Jan 2023 until Dec 2024. She was a attending a local Cupertino high school at the time. In the AP Drawing examination in 2025 she got a 5. 1. The Hongyun teachers are very caring and encouraging. 2. If your child is a high schooler, their classes can be almost 3 hours long. High schoolers are allowed to come and go during their class time. They nip out to Starbucks for example, for a break. Nobody really monitors how many times they slip out, and how long they are gone. I think the teachers are just too busy. Of course if less work is done, you have to register for more classes to get the desired outcome. 3. When it came time to register for the AP examination, Hongyun Art could not do it for us. They outsourced this to FLEX College Prep, who charged us $300 to register. I know that most schools charge around $100 per AP examination. I also found out that competitors, like CalColor Academy, register their students as part of their services. I refused to pay $300 and I found a cheaper alternative on my own. In October 2024 I made an appointment with the owner of Hongyun Art (Tommy) to tell him that AP students need to be on task, otherwise we are paying Hongyun prices for Starbucks trips. I also told him that $300 is really too expensive for AP examination registration. Why didn't he find a cheaper way, when I managed to find one myself? Tommy didn't really have time for me. In fact he was openly impatient. This is after 18 months of paying him on time and treating his staff with respect. I'm glad my daughter did well, but if I had to do it again, I would go somewhere else. read more

Also, everyone's drawings look similar, even the little kids', which are usually more creative. In the past year and a half since my daughter started at Visionary Arts, her confidence and her art skills have blossomed. In just that short time, my daughter has been able to win a local Bay Area art contest as well as has been recognized as a young artist in the Junior Duck Stamp contest. It does help if your child is naturally interested in creativity and art, but my daughter has no shortage of that and as a result I feel that the art studio has taken my child's interests in art to new heights. We have gone on field trips with the art studio to the DeYoung museum and wildlife preserves. Both of which have been positive experiences that my daughter and I have enjoyed because Teacher Helen took time to guide the group. For my family, this has been an unexpectedly fun, positive, and educational journey in learning about art, conservation, and life skills. My daughter not only has been improving her drawing and painting skills, but she has been learning patience, perseverance, and time management skills through doing art. The art contest and art show display opportunities that Visionary Arts have the kids participate in are instrumental to this. Last year's Junior Duck Stamp contest was my daughter's first big art project that she completed from start to finish. Ever since, my daughter's confidence in being able to complete bigger projects has increased. The art studio does get busy at times when there's a deadline for submission to art contests but even during the busy times Teacher Helen manages single handedly all the kids and parents remarkably well. My daughter started going to Hongyun Art School when she was six years old. She fell in love with Hongyun and her teachings. Now seven years later she still goes there every week and loves every moment of it. Hongyun Art School has been an integral part of her education and it has played a very important role in her growth. My daughter has learned many things from Hongyun Art School. Art skills are the most direct product. All art schools teach technical skills, but Hongyun teaches more than that. What distinguishes her school is its emphasis on creativity. My daughter is able to keep her creativity alive while improving on the technical skills. This has given her an edge on school projects. A lot projects require drawing, and she can always complete it fast and well. Team work is another distinctive offering by Hongyun Art. The traditional art training, as almost all art school for children offers today, is a solitary act. However, Hongyun successfully incorporates team work into her curriculum. Kids are given opportunities to work as a group on creating books, products and even serving parties. My daughter has benefited greatly from these team projects. When she partnered with other kids for academic competitions, we received many compliments on how well she worked with her teammates. The biggest impact that Hongyun has had on my daughter is help her overcome her shyness. When she was little, she was very shy. Every teacher told me that she was too quiet in class and we should do something about it. Being an introvert myself, I didn't know how I could do to help her until we met Hongyun. Hongyun, unlike the art teacher she had in kindergarten, used encouragements rather than critiques. She marveled at her primitive drawings like master pieces. At first I couldn't help offering my true critical opinions, and then I realized that Hongyun's approach worked better. Encouragement and praises boost a child's confidence greatly. Confidence was exactly what my daughter needed to overcome her shyness. Over the years that follow, Hongyun has created numerous innovative activities for the kids. My daughter has gained many valuable skills from participating in those activities. Those skills are carried over to her school works and she is doing great in school. Every little success is a small booster for confidence. Today, I'm proud to say that my daughter has become a confident and outgoing teenager. I truly believe that her experience at Hongyun Art School has contributed a great deal to her transformation. Hongyun Art is a five star art school for children. Okay, honestly, I don't know what all these parents on yelp are being salty about, but based on my experience, this art class is 100% one of the best I have ever been to. Two of my friends had recommended this place to me since I had been a self taught artist and because they knew I really wanted to go art class. I signed up, took the tryout class, and was placed into a cloud, or a level. I disliked the idea of levels at first (because I didn't know what they were) but I realized that it was a very efficient way of practicing your skills and making sure you are learning at the right pace. Hongyun also has academic projects, as well as other projects that allow the student to explore different fields of art. There are different classes you can take, including college portfolio, digital art, or just the regular art class, but in all of them, they make sure the student gets the help they need. The main idea of Hongyun Art was to encourage creativity in students, but it also has leadership programs and can be very beneficial to students in the future. A lot of people complain about the pricing of the classes, but in all seriousness, it's because your children don't realize the money put into the classes and just goof around all class. I mean if you think that the money isn't worth it, don't take the classes. Also another reason why this place is 20/10 is because they have a dog as a mascot. I worked as a teacher and studio manager at Hongyun Art. I'm sharing my experience to offer insight to families who trust this school with their children's art education and development. I loved working with the students and built strong, positive relationships with many parents. However, I resigned several months ago due to serious concerns about how staff were treated and how the studio was managed by the owners. During my time there, I observed high staff turnover and what I felt was a lack of support and respect for the teaching team. Several instructors--many of whom were talented and committed--left due to similar concerns. I was also alarmed by the lack of required training for individuals placed in classrooms with young children, as well as the inconsistent attention to cleanliness and facility upkeep. These patterns raised concerns for me about the working environment and the integrity of what was being presented to families. Ultimately, I felt I could no longer stay in good conscience. To the parents and students I worked with: thank you for your warmth and support. You were the only rewarding part of my time at Hongyun Art. read more

Hello I am the business owner. Yelp constantly calls us to ask for money to pay for ads. We refuse each time. If you scroll all the way down to the bottom of this page you'll see a grayed out button that says "reviews not currently recommended". In this section we have quite a few great reviews from people who have been our students and customers for many years yet Yelp chooses not to show their reviews or count them in the ratings. This is highly suspicious and I honestly do not trust yelp and their business practices. They seem to favor negative reviews over positive ones in trying to get honest business to pay them advertising fees. I bet if we did this, yelp would magically start showing and weighting our positive reviews. If you ask yelp why these reviews are not recommended, they simply say "oh it's the algorithm and we have no control over this". Please be wary of this site and this company as their practices are less than transparent and they seem to focus on extorting small businesses for ad buys rather than valuing the opinion of actual customers. read more

The reason that I give Hongyun Art a 5 is quite simple. It's because my kids love the school and I love them too. My kids joined Hongyun Art more than 3 years ago. They had been learning some from the previous 4 art teachers, but Hongyun Art gives them more. I have never expected my kids to be artists as being an artist needs talent and hard work. I want them to have fun during their childhood and get some skills to help them better complete the school projects. At Hongyun art, my kids are learning more than just painting a beautiful picture, they are learning life skills from the teachers during all kinds of well-designed activities to be positive, confident, disciplined and creative. The teachers ate Hongyun Art are energetic and talented. They are like role models to my kids.They are teaching not only art, but also how to love our community and the world more, be confident and positive when facing difficulties. I appreciate all their efforts to make the school such a lovely place for my kids. I wish more kids could benefit from their education philosophy. read more

As a former teacher at this art school, I want to share a perspective that future educators and families should be aware of. I truly enjoyed teaching the kids and working alongside a team of passionate and supportive coworkers--they were the ones who made my days meaningful. However, the management was very concerning. I was asked by the owners to create demo materials outside of work hours, without any compensation. I witnessed several talented coworkers resign due to mistreatment and a lack of respect from leadership. There was little to no appreciation for the time and effort teachers put in. The owners are more concerned with generating profit than with creating a better environment for students and teachers. It's disheartening to see how undervalued teachers are here. I hope the management seriously reflects on how they treat their staff-because the students and teachers deserve better. read more

Hongyun art is great place to let students learn art and show off their creativity in a bunch of different and unique ways. Not only does HYA offer normal art classes but they also give the opportunity to someone who does not enjoy doing pencil to paper art to try something new such as digital art. I personally believe that HYA is a great place for interacting with others and a great place to learn. Not only the are the staff and other students there friendly, the student gets a great learning experience. Whatever type of art that the student enjoys, HYA has a place for them to develop these styles as well as create interests for other art types like acrylic painting. I'm always trying to get some tasty texmex at Rio and these guys have their big ol van parked in the way! A lot of the times there are parents picking up kids and just idling in the driveway - not acceptable and fair to the patrons of the other business here. Anywho, it seems like this place is popular, and as an actor, I love drawing and art and everything so Hongyun Art is great for the future of our country! Looking back on it, outside of the progress you'd expect from four years of practice, I don't think I improved that much. They teach you to copy from a reference pretty well, which would be alright if you're going for hyperrealism, but that wasn't exactly what I was aiming for, back then or now. When I look at my drawings now, I realize that I was able to get details right, but the proportions were always slightly off. Also, everyone's drawings look similar, even the little kids', which are usually more creative. Certain teachers are nice and helpful, but some of the teachers are very cold, almost scary, including Meiying herself. I'd suggest going to a different school instead.
