We've had a wonderful experience with the digital art/painting class at CalColor. Instructor Yunli is fantastic--patient, knowledgeable, and great with kids. She encourages students to develop and explore their own creative concepts and even guides them toward applying for art competitions, which is such a confidence boost. Digital art is an excellent art form, very relevant in this day and age and extremely accessible for kids as long as they have an iPad. My kids love to draw and paint and we were looking for a way to help them refine those interests and find new ways and mediums to express themselves. They've been attending CalColor Academy for over 2 years (Exploration and Foundation), as well as summer camps and they love it. I appreciate the breadth of creative projects (e.g. Diwali lights, Lunar New Year dragons, under the sea themes, and more) and the mediums they have explored over the years - from markers to painting to oil pastels and mixed media and everything in between. The manager of this campus, Ms.Gigi, was a great teacher (she was teaching). There a cards you get from teachers before Christmas break and you only get them at CalColor (not for sale!). They included different type of techniques and skills like the color range and body proportions. For summer camps, they gave out snacks that are free(no need to pay!). They also included great lunches like teriyaki chicken but you will need to pay a little bit of money. read more

I took my 4.5 year old to a trial class here awhile back and while she enjoyed the class, I had concerns about the organization and safety for young children. My first observation is that it was such a chaotic environment. The teacher was either very late (10 min) or didn't show and had to have someone step in. There was no explanation given and they just quickly jumped into the lesson without showing the few new/trial students where to go and what to do. From a safety perspective, my biggest flag was the bathroom situation. There were several classes running simultaneously across various ages from 4 year olds through high school. Because it was her first time, I stayed near the class and noticed her telling her teacher that she needed to use the restroom. The teacher was busy and told her it was ok to go without telling her where. I walked her to the bathrooms at the back of the building and there was a line - 2 high school students and one man who I assume was a dad. Having 4 year olds wait for restrooms unsupervised especially with the range of ages present was a major flag for me. They also didn't have stools or anything and she definitely was not able to reach the sink taps without me holding her up. Also, echoing what another reviewer said. It was so hectic that day - no one in the front was paying attention to who is walking in or out. I know this is fine for parents of older children, but if you're going to have classes open to 4 year olds, there should be appropriate precautions and equipment in place. read more

Our older daughter started learning art at a competitor school at age 5. For the 3 years we were there, I didn't feel my daughter's drawing was progressing at a noticeable rate, which was why we moved her to CalColor at age 8 based on good reviews of the school. Ever since then, her art learning journey was channeled to the fast lane that was up and beyond our expectations. First, she was with Ms Lori at Foundation class, where the students were exposed to a wide range of art materials ranging from color pencil to marker, water color, oil pastel and acrylic paint. The curriculum was thoughtfully designed with many art styles and techniques, and there were even PowerPoint presentations for parents to learn together what they would be teaching during the semester. Later, she also signed up for digital art where she loved to learn how to draw on iPad using an Apple pen and Procreate. The school's website has a program pathway where students can work on fine art and digital art according to their interest with the guided schedule, which we find really helpful. A few semesters later, our daughter got into Elite Foundation class with Mr. Alvin, where her artistic talents and potential really blossomed. This Elite program is for kids who are really serious about art learning. The projects they worked on were much more challenging and sophisticated, yet Mr. Alvin miraculously managed to get his points across on the Zoom meetings (during the Covid pandemic), and these 8-9 year old kids were able to spend 6-7 weeks on a project that would completely blow me away. Honestly, I couldn't believe my daughter was able to draw what she drew. Aside from the regular weekly classes, we have always signed up for their summer camps per our daughter's request. Now she is continuing her art journey here at age 11 and we started sending our younger one in for the same high-quality art education. We have nothing but good things to say about the school, the teachers and the admin team. I was in calcolor I think when I was really young and then i moved to Los Angeles and stopped. Then i moved back to cupertino three years ago and decided that i should start art again. So a year ago i tried out drawing and i surprisingly didnt do too bad since i was placed in level 3 in Mrs Rain's class. Now im in lvl 4 and going to painting next year. Its sad to leave drawing but i really progressed a lot and every class i felt like i was getting better. I think taking calcolor is the right idea since you learn a lot of artistic skills and techniques as well as having fun projects to work on read more

We signed up for a private summer camp during COVID-19 shelter-in-place, one art teacher vs. 8 kids from the neighborhood. CalColor strictly followed "Guidance for Summer Camps" from the Public Health Department of Santa Clara County. All adults wore masks, and kids were recommended to wear masks as well. The classroom was sanitized daily. My kid had a wonderful time with her friends at the one week camp where they did several painting projects and made an animal clay pot. The art teacher, Ms. Peiju, was professional, patient and kind. We couldn't be happier with CalColor's flexibility to open private camps during this special time and our kid got to learn her favorite subject with her little buddies. read more

My son, who is 5.5 years now, has been studying at CalColor Academy Cupertino Site for almost 7 months. I noticed BIG changes from him! He has been in a very supportive daycare for almost 4 years, where the teachers provide tons of art exploration activities and opportunities through these years. But he never has interests in these activities. He seldomly draws anything by himself. He fell behind in terms of fine motor skills. Since he has been studying at CalColor since the beginning of this year, he began to draw by himself! He begins to use art as a tool for expressing himself. He begins to draw when he is sad or happy. When he feels upset, he will draw it into art. When he would like to show his affection towards me, he will draw it into art. I'm so glad and surprised to find that he now gradually has another way of expressing his feelings! His daycare teacher also noticed that he began to attend art activities at school. All these BIG changes are credited to CalColor! My son has been studying with 3 different teachers at CalColor. All these teachers are very passionate about art. Their passion has great influences on my son. His interest in art gradually developed under their influences. In additions, these teachers are very warm, kind, fun and supportive. They make the art learning journey fun and excited. They're not only great artists, but also great teachers. They know how to connect with kids. The experience of CalColor at Cupertino was horrible and I was very disappointed about this school. It is not considered as safe for any kids and the school staff are not responsible as other schools'. I contacted the school and asked whether there are any concerns regarding having a 4 year old kid at the class. They said there are plenty of opportunities and no concerns. So I registered for my son although I was a bit concerned about whether he is ready for the class. Then the first day, after about 15 minutes we sent him to the school, the front desk called us and mentioned he was crying so they decided to send him to the front desk, and asked us to pick him up. I asked whether they can have another try, and they refused. Then I went to pick him up. He was there alone and nobody was around. When I picked him up and left, nobody asked anything. I was a bit concerned if a stranger took him away, the front desk probably would not even notice - it is not even a safe place for kids. I went to the window of the classroom to take a look. The teacher was there to watch her phone, and students were just drawing something on the paper by themselves. If this is the experience for the 4 years old kid who had no drawing experience, it might be a bit too advanced for him. Then I requested a refund but they asked for a $20 processing fee and $50 registration fee. What a horrible experience - 15 minutes without even a little effort from the teacher or anyone from the school, they charge for $70. I'd not recommend this place to any friends at all. It is not even considered as a safe place for any kids. read more

My two kids have been taking Calcolor classes and camps since age 4 and 5. We have worked with a number of teachers in Cupertino and Mountain View sites and I have to say all the teachers are great! They are passionate about art, inspiring and very experienced in with young kids to cultivate creativity. My kids have been to other studios and private lessons but they both ranked Calcolor as their favorite art studio. The regular curriculum is very well structured, exploring different materials and forms, while working on projects kids love. We've tried submarines, ocean life, mermaids, pokemon, game board design and clay. During COVID, the staff worked tirelessly to transition to online zoom instruction and the result is amazing and far surpassed my expectations. It is not easy to keep young kids engaged but my 5 year old look forward to the zoom class and is able to focus for 45 minutes by herself to finish a piece of work. When county relaxed shelter guidelines in June, we also signed up for a week of in person camp. Calcolor teachers and staff meticulously planned the instruction and activities to allow the children to have fun and social interactions, yet minimizing the risk of infection. Small groups of 6-8 kids had dedicated class room, activity room and bathroom! Overall the camp was a great experience. read more

My child took the online classes during the pandemic and recently joined the computer anime/ animation summer camp for 1 week. Both were run very professionally, e.g. online classes material pick-ups, in-person camp kids drop-off, pick-ups and lunch arrangements....etc. The teachers (2 teachers during 2020~2021 online and Mr. Joseph for this year's summer camp) are professional art teachers with lots of patience for kids. Great teacher student ratio. Well designed lesson plans. During pandemic, I was especially impressed by two of the lessons that I sat alongside my child: Ukyio-e and Van Gogh. The Ukyio-e one didn't use the most famous Hokusai as example but another less famous artist, which I thought was brilliant. The teacher explained the Ukyio-e style and focus very well. The artist chosen particularly likes Birds Eye views. In the end, 6 2nd graders can draw a Birds Eye viewpoint picture with their understanding of the style. Our recent summer camp experience was great, too. My child walked in with brand new iPad and Apple Pencil, not knowing much as to how to use them. Coming out on Friday knowing how to storyboard, layers, making short animatics,...etc. it was obvious that at least 5 out of the 10 campers were already experienced in ProCreate and iMovie, but the teacher were able to give them different individual attention. read more
