Eight meads for the three of us to sample.

A little unsure of what laid ahead of us, we stopped in this afternoon to explore the world of mead. First, the woman (manager? Owner?) who served us was wonderful. She was both informative and extremely helpful. She started us with the base flavor (extract?) of mead, which was kind of similar to a Pinot gris or Sauvignon blanc. From there, we named off several flavors that sounded interesting to us, and she prepared an eight-flavor flight for us to try. Along the way, we each found our favorite, and for the few none of us cared for, she voluntarily replaced them with other options for us to try. Located in a warehouse park, Honnibrook is a little different from your typical brewery or winery, and it has a unique vibe all its own. However, it's got its place in Castle Rock. We could certainly see returning when in the mood for more mead.

A coworker and I visited and both agreed the mead was excellent. Very friendly staff also. After the tasting we bought several bottles to take home and share with friends. See you again soon!

Nice meadery in the southern fringes of Castle Rock, easily accessed from I-25, nestled in a new industrial park. Broad selection of flavors in the mead, light in style, good fruit flavors. Enjoyed the Earl Grey/Lavender in particular. Generous tasting flight pours. Very friendly staff. A good place to visit.

This is actually a craft meadery! I discovered it on tap at 105West Brewery. What an amazing find! I have celiac and can't drink beer. Mead is naturally gluten free. I came directly to the meadery for some mead directly from the tap. Amazing! So good! Great flavors, lightly carbonated and fresh! I can't believe I've never been here! I highly recommend! I wish I found this sooner!

We had stopped through a few weeks back while visiting family in the area. We've been to quite a few mead places over the years, and this was among the best places we've been to. We tried to flights and also got one of the slushees, and they were all phenomenal and reasonably priced. I'd highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area and looking to try something different.

Absolutely in LOVE!!! I got a flight of eight tasters and loved every single one of them. Ended up getting a couple of crowlers to go and can't wait to crack them open. The owner and staff went above and beyond, actually sitting down to talk with us and getting to know us. 100% worth the trip. I will continue to go back and support this business.

Steven and I have practically become beer snobs overnight. With this in mind we are always looking for another brewery to try. Along the way we also got a taste for mead as well. Colorado is mostly known for their breweries but there are a handful of meaderies in the state as well. Almost all of them seem to be ran out of some body's home. Calling to see if a tasting can be arranged can be difficult. Some of the ones we tried to go to before act like they don't even want you to come over and try what they have to offer. One meadery owner acted like she was selling illegal drugs and said that she didn't want us to come over without an appointment and have the neighbor's become aroused because they see a strange car in the driveway. Hmmm. Colorado's breweries and meaderies are listed in a guide, a map if you will that indicates the various breweries in the state. The map has jumped the gun on several occasions and we went to breweries that haven't even opened yet. The brewery guide and map has been however accurate with hours of business with these places listed. Which brings me to the Black Forest Meadery. This was the only meadery that seemed to have established hours without the comment 'call for information' . This gave us the idea that this place was more established and ready to receive guests. The GPS led us through different parts of Black Forest, CO and eventually to a residence where the meadery is. There was a sign that indicated we were indeed at the meadery with an additional sign that said there was a wine tasting today. Under the sign that had the said name was a phone number to call to have a gate open to get to the residence. We called without no answer which eventually led to an answering machine saying that we reached Black Forest Meadery. Yes, we KNOW that already from the sign. There was no information stating their hours, just in case the map got it wrong again. Totally deflated we went back to the Interstate with no mead. So was the map wrong? Who knows. This leads me to my final rant of going to homes that run a business inside them. The residents can totally make up their own rules. That is fine but if customers get the idea that you will be around and you are not... well the customer feels kind of screwed. It may all be a question of seriousness too. Maybe selling puppies and making mead is more of a hobby and you aren't really open for business till you need some extra money on the side? Who knows what peoples motivations are. After some further thought it might had been a good idea that no one was there to let us through the gate. It might have been a very pressuring experience where a couple is reeeeeally pushing you into buying some mead or that puppy or whatever. Then you feel bad if you don't buy anything and they get frustrated at you because 'lil Susie had to wait fifteen minutes after soccer practice because they were dealing with the likes of you. It takes pressuring 'used car dealership' type sales to a whole new level because you are in some body's domain and not in your own or out in a neutral area. Who knows, maybe none of these stereotypes would come true at Black Forest Meadery there was no way to tell. That gate did not open.

Their patio is wonderful when it's available and the inside space has several different heights of tables with either backed chairs or backless bar stools. I am sober from alcohol so don't have much reason to drop in on my own; there is only one NA on tap and it's always a kombucha. Boring. There are so many killer NA ciders out there these days. It's up to SVC whether to welcome in the sober, the pregnant, the "I have a test tomorrow"... their choice is no, and that's fine, they pay in lost income. For those who do drink, though, there are 30+ on tap (which is why it's so disappointing they offer nothing for the rest of us). I've had their ciders before becoming sober and they have lots of options from pucker dry to knock-you-out sweet and everything in between. Lots of fun collabs with distilleries and wineries lend themselves to unique and funky batches. I love their quirky Japanese snacks and beverages, it really lends a goofy flair that gives the place a lot of charm! There are also some real food options these days as well which is nice to support effectively metabolizing alcohol so customers don't go home drunk. Ciders can sneak up on you!
