This is a local theater that has a cafe attached to it. Here I'm just going to talk about the cafe. The menu has a good selection of vegetarian dishes. The only non-vegetarian ingredient seemed to be smoked salmon. The service was good. I enjoyed the cute wooden plates and bowls. I had a Ferris Bueller, which was a "health bowl with souffled egg, smoked gouda, sprouts, tomato, arugula, and pesto sauce." Souffled egg was good. The ingredients were fresh but generally tasted a bit bland. Would have liked more sauce. Boyfriend had The Big Lebowski, aka Super Salad, which had arugula, smoked salmon, sprouts, tomatoes, avocado, chevre, capers, onions, and macademia nuts. I liked this one better than the Ferris, but the smoked salmon (our only non-veg ingredient) was...flaked, like from a can. That was kind of :/ We also ordered a soy chai latte and a Mexican hot chocolate. I found the soy chai to be too sweet, but Mexican hot chocolate was appropriately spicy and very good. The Mexican hot chocolate almost seemed a bit watery, but otherwise it would have been too heavy so I have no complaints. Liliko'i (passionfruit) cheesecake was delicious! White chocolate macademia nut cookies were too sweet in my opinion. 75c for 2 chocolate-and-toffee-covered mac nuts were delicious :) read more

This theatre is FANTASTIC!!! It's got old world charm, organic coffee treats, and incredibly friendly staff! They show movies, have theatre classes , and also feature every different kind of musical performance one could dream of. DO NOT MISS it if you are going thru Honokaa. Yes! I love this place and miss it everyday since I moved back to Seattle. The bagels are great for breakfast, lunch or a snack. 6 dollar films in a charming old theater. And the popcorn was delicious and cheap. Can't do better than that!

If you know what to expect, you will have a good time. Here are 10 tips that hopefully help you get the best experience. 1. It is old. Or you could say historical, or quaint. It's the original wooden building, which the website says was built in 1930. 2. It is new. The lobby has been reconstructed, with some decorative antiques and sofas for lounging. They have a website, too. 3. It is big. This is not a multi-plex that squeezes you into small viewing rooms where you can hear the special effects explosions of the action movie playing next door. Compared to those, this screen is huge and the auditorium seems cavernous. 4. It is small-town. Don't expect LED light strips in the aisles or uniformed ushers. The cashier who sold you the ticket may also be the guy who starts the movie, so be patient. Use the flashlight app on your cellphone to find your seat if they haven't turned on the lights yet. 5. As they recommend on their website, CALL AHEAD the day you plan go. We did, and it turned out there was a missed shipment so the movie that night was cancelled! Thank goodness we called. 6. Most evenings, they show a movie at 5:00 and one at 7:00. If the first movie is more than 2 hours, you have to wait until it is done even though your iPhone shows 7:00. If you see a lot of people waiting in the lobby near the inner door, ASK them, don't just barge in on others enjoying the last part of their movie. 7. It is a bargain. The highest ticket price is $7 for adults, it's less for seniors and students, and even less for children under 12. 8. The snack bar menu is more extensive than anything at Regal, AMC, or Mann. Where else can you get smoothies, popcorn (with a variety of add-ins -- including arare or furikake), sandwiches, salads, boba tea, ice cream, espressos and lattes, and much more. Oh, and there is ONE line for snacks, if you are wondering. 8. To find the bathrooms, from the main entrance go straight through the lobby, through the door into the hallway that runs along the back length of the auditorium area. Men's is to the left, women's to the right. 9. Another customer told us that sometimes they show previews before a movie, sometimes they don't. So get your group seated and send one person out to get the snacks. Or better yet, buy your snacks while you are waiting for the first movie to finish, because the snack line gets long right before the movie. 10. Relax. Be flexible. Enjoy a night out without a long drive to Hilo or Kona, with a mix of locals and visitors who are all interested in seeing the movie with you. Take it easy, braddah! read more

We LOVE this theater and it's rich history and the fact that it is still showing first run movies - also BEST popcorn ever! It's so chill, they flicker the lights before the movie begins. Everyone seems to be able to deal with no drink holders, kids and cell phones without freaking out - too bad more theaters don't have this friendly feeling. read more

This is a great place! They have great coffee in the cafe during the day and the movies allow me to take my family out for a treat without breaking the bank. We are able to see movies here for about half the cost of going to Hilo or Kona. read more

We had the Buster Keaton, a smoothie and a bagel sandwich all of which were delicious. The service was excellent and the servers were super friendly. An excellent place to stop for lunch (or any meal) on your way to Waipio Valley. read more

Favorite theatre, and now that they serve food, it's our new favorite date night! Had the superman, hubs had the buster keaton and both were absolutely scrumptious!!! Super fresh and oh so yummy. Best movie atmosphere ever. The theatre is super dark so it's hard to move around once the movie starts, it echos a lot in the building, and you can hear noises from outside. But something about it made me feel like I was watching a movie at home with my family. Super friendly atmosphere, and so chill. Almost wrecks me from going to other movie theatres. Also I got my ticket, popcorn, chocolate bar, and a soda for 11 bucks. read more

if you have some place to be do not come here. this is the second time I came here. my first experience was fine, but extremely slow. This time stood out more since I was planning on being in and out. I walked in with only one person in front of me ordering, I was never acknowledged for the 8+ min I was sitting there. Then on top of that two ladies walked in behind me and immediately were greeted and started talking story. I left promptly. This trip sadly will be my last to this joint. read more

This place is the Center of Honoka'a.....heck, of Hamakua! Stop on in, get some tasty local coffee, or sandwiches, ANYTHING they make is wonderful! The eggs, the Avo, the bread, all local! The desserts are fantastic as well. Grab a table outside and watch as Honoka'a goes by! Stay for a movie and get Ono Popcorn with some local toppings! This place is like no other. Honoka'a Peoples Theatre rocks! This little gem is so adorable, so hip and really special. The theatre has been remodeled to its original glory. Unfortunately this does mean no comfy seats. Wooden seats with no cup holder, just like the old days. Be sure to take a look at the ceiling and the lobby. It is really beautiful. There are movies here, although the showing times are somewhat limited. The best thing are the concerts. The atmosphere and staff are so laid back, the scene so cool, it is almost like stepping into your own movie. Going to a concert at Honoka'a Peoples Theatre is the ultimate cool. There is no age discrimination. You will see all ages and everybody just has a great time. An added bonus is the coffee shop in the mornings. It is cozy and coffee shop comfortable on the inside but I like to sit outside at the little tables. Vegetarian breakfasts are good, although not always consistent in taste quality. Allow extra time as nothing is made up in advance. They serve local Hamakua coffee, outrageously good, maybe.. yes.. even better than Kona coffee. The only problem is that the coffee is so delicious, it goes down fast and refills are not free. Sip slowly and enjoy the vibe. read more

This is a small town theater and my grandfather was a little boy when it was built. I go here once or twice every week. Prices are super cheap compared to any other theater on this island. Most theatres cost around 10-30 per ticket, the snacks are ridiculous, and they use fake cheese butter. Honoka'a charges Adults $6, $4 for seniors 65 and older, and $3 for children. A large soda is about $2.50, a large popcorn is $4 bucks, and candy selections are a dollar each. Real butter is used and you choose whether or not you want it and how much... yum! Within the last two years the theatre has transformed the outdoor and concessions area into a café. They have movie themed foods that cater to a lot of people (allergies, vegetarians, and people dieting). The theatre is open through out the day as a café and a theatre at night. Tickets can be bought in or outside so don't be shy, the staff sure isn't. The people who work there are outgoing and very good at their jobs. New workers are constantly being trained so be patient and watch these shy people blossom into very efficient workers. I would also like to bring attention to the fact that my small hometown theatre has a projector and is trying to raise $60,000 dollars to buy the new digital player that will soon be necessary to play movies on. Please help support this wonderful and historical theatre stay in business and continue to bring movies that people would otherwise not see for a very long time if it wasn't here. read more
