The spot itself has awesome industrial vibes. high ceilings, brick walls, and a huge open wood-fired grill right in the center that immediately lets you know you're in good hands. They cook their steaks over that open fire, and the flavor is insane. Perfectly seared, tender, and with just the right amount of wood-smoke flavor. Our waiter was on another level. The guy knew every detail of the menu inside and out, breaking down the ingredients like a pro and recommending wine pairings that were 100% dead-on for what we ordered. We made a reservation in advance on a Friday night, wanting to celebrate an occasion with a really good restaurant. This seemed like the Michelin star restaurant that was the most "local" and I'm very glad we ended up here. It was way more casual than I was expecting (take that as a compliment). It had an open slightly rustic industrial feel to it without the pretention of a lot of other high end restaurants. Our servers were attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. I have to say their Old Fashioned was one of the best I ever had... and I ended up having three (the third was my dessert). We opted for the tasting menu without the wine pairing (I don't really like wine). There were a few things on the tasting menu with items I'm not usually fond of, but I figured this is the place that is going to make it work so just do it. And they certainly made it work. The food was so tasty I forgot to take pictures of most of the courses. It was all delicious, even the rhubarb dessert (I really don't like rhubarb and while I wouldn't order this dessert by choice, I was happy to eat it). Our experience overall was great. While we waited a long time to get our drink orders and the first round from the tasting menu, everything else came out at normal intervals. However, by the time we were done and contemplating a dessert beverage, we were informed that there was a time limit on the table and they'd have to check if they could get us drinks or if we'd need to give up the table. While I'm totally understanding of limiting the time because some people just loiter, I did not feel like we took a lot of extra time, so perhaps there's some timing that's a bit off. What an adventure! My husband and I made a reservation long in advance as we were coming all the way from Honolulu to Montreal! They greeted us with so much warmth, and the whole experience was a rare treat! The amuse bouche was a mussel in its shell on vichyssoise. I don't even like mussels, but this was so delicious I could have eaten a dozen for my main course ! I don't usually eat sweetbreads, but decided to give theirs a try. It was well worth it! Small portions, but every bite was divine! My brother-in-law's oysters came with a light Zabayon sauce. What a treat! The monk fish with green beans was equally divine. My husband was a bit disappointed in the duck, which had a very strong flavor and was accompanied by a skewer of two duck hearts --I guess that's just not our thing! We couldn't order the tasting menu because the whole table has to have it, and my husband's brother is a pescatarian. So we were especially impressed that the chef allowed us to have the rhubarb dessert from the tasting menu for our dessert. Delicious! I'm not sure if Michelin stars are awarded in Montreal; if they are, then Hoogan et Beaufort should definitely be on their radar. We walked in on a weeknight right around opening team and were seated immediately. We left around 7:30 and the restaurant was nearly full, so I'd recommend a reservation if dining later in the evening. Strong smokey aroma as soon as you enter the restaurant. Looked like they had a wood burning restaurant which fumigates the restaurant and leaves you smelling like the most delicious of campfires. The trip to the dry cleaners after eating here is completely worthwhile. The menu was approachable with roughly a dozen items which all seemed appealing, so we simplified the experience by opting for the tasting menu. There are a couple wine tasting pairings available, but we opted to pick our own beverages. I had the house beer with my meal while my wife had a cocktail. They had the most expensive wine list that we've come across in Montreal. The courses were quite profound. I had a tough time identifying everything going on aside from some of the more pronounced features. First course was a chopped scallop salad topped with micro greens and razor thin fruit. Second course was snow crab over an acidic green sauce. Third course was likely my favorite. It was a cheese tortolinni with grilled quail and mushrooms in a creamer green sauce. Fourth and main course was duck breast with a wedged sweet potato, razor thin fruit, and trumpet mushrooms. For dessert, we had mushroom cookies with a distinct maple flavor to them along with a sort of sophisticated sundae. They had an excellent whiskey list too, so I decided to have a glass of auchentoshan triple wood with dessert. Service was world class. Incredibly attentive and knowledgeable. I was really excited when Hoogan & Beaufort announced they were opening for takeout because I, inexplicably, have not been before. Takeout is easy, ordering and payment is done on their online site the day of and pick up at the time you request. Their entire menu sounded great but we decided to get their lobster and shrimp rolls, lobster capelacci, seafood coquille, chicken liver mousse, focaccia, asparagus and green bean salad . Everything was excellent! I can't pick a favorite dish. The lobster rolls were delicious (there are 6), the lobster pasta were exceptional and take just 90 seconds to prepare. The salads were simple but the ingredients were so fresh and perfectly prepared. I think the best value was the chicken liver mousse, I spread some on crackers and bread every day for over a week. Even though there are so many restaurants offered takeout, I will certainly order from Hoogan & Beaufort again! read more

First, take note that the restaurant is in a residential neighborhood, and not near the downtown area. It is most easily accessible by car. I came here on date night, ordered the oysters, the mushroom entrée, and three different plates of pasta and the duck (the portions were a bit small, and we are big eaters). All three plates were delicious (I forget their names), a few were a bit too salty for my liking, but overall flavorful. I also liked the selection of cocktails they offered. Amazing prix fixe meal including wood-fired food and wine and mocktails! We both did the full wood-fired prix fixe meal while one of us did the wine pairing and the other did the mocktail pairing and everything was incredible! The food was a lot of seafood, but also duck, and some amazing veggies. They all had incredible flavors and lots of stuff was smoked or charred on the wood fire and it was excellent. There were 8 courses and the portions were decent-sized (not huge, but definitely not tiny). We were both comfortably full at the end of the meal. The wines were all super interesting and tasty on their own, but also paired nicely with each course. There were wines from many different countries and vintages, which made things very interesting. The mocktails were super flavorful and tasty as well and paired really well with the food. The staff were all super nice and knowledgable with each course being presented by a chef and each wine coming with a description from the sommelier and each mocktail being described by the head bartender. The ambiance was cozy and warm with the raging wood fire at the back. We did have a bit of trouble finding the place as the nominal address pointed us to the back side of the building, but it wasn't too hard to figure out once we got there. read more

As a visitor, I definitely would not have found this place myself. A friend of ours local to Montreal recommended this place and it definitely delivered. Definitely out of the way and not in the main tourist hubs, a bit of a drive from the downtown core, but worth the mini trek. Super laid back and relaxed vibes, very contemporary yet cosy feel. I wouldn't recommend dressing up but I also wouldn't come in a shirt and shorts. We were a group of 6 and decided to go and order 2 of the breads which by the way was amaaaaaaazing, all the appies(6), all the pasta (3), and 3 entrees which were shared between each of the couples. Everything is so good!! Come here for diner to celebrate the end of this semester. Since it's my first time here I choose the tasting menu with one cocktail. What impresses me most is their foie gras, it's the best foie gras I've eaten in Montreal!! It's creamy and the bread is also delicious, the combination of the is perfect. The butter they used is good as well. I want to use more words but the only thoughts when I'm eating is "it is so good" :) it's a little expensive but it definitely worths it!! Small, hidden gem that has a wonderful shared plates menu. It's not terribly expensive and the service was really nice and thoughtful. The menu rotates regularly so you may have an entirely different experience coming here. They also have a tasting menu, available only for the whole table, that is separate and different from the shared plates menu. Our table shared oysters with a cider flavored foam, foccatia with peppered butter, lobster bisque pasta, and a big steak for three. We ordered two bottles of cider and the waiter had it chilled for us. They also came over to our table very often to pour and top us off, loved that. Great service read more

I loved this restaurant--the semi-industrial vibe that it's in, the food, the styling. We tried this restaurant during a food event MTL à Table and everything on the menu was a delight. The grilled octopus entrée stole the show. It was so tender! We had also the smoked sturgeon, homemade pasta with mushrooms, short ribs and carrot and brownie desserts. Parking in the area is easy enough to find but definitely make reservations for dining in (whenever that becomes possible again!). Considering the number of restaurants in Montreal, there are only a few places which after having done once, I'd go again and again...Hoogan & Beaufort is one of them! Having had dinner and lunch here multiple times, the food, service and whole experience has always been fantastic! My last visit here was with a group of friends for lunch where I enjoyed a beet and cheesehead entree, an octopus and chorizo tagliatelle main, and a deconstructed chocolate ganache cake for dessert. I must admit that the pasta was a little too salty due to the chorizo for my taste, I still think that the dishes here are always delicious. I enjoy the play of flavours and textures; the ingredients, which are always fresh and seasonal, allow for a varying and interesting menu at every visit. If you do have the chance to visit this spot, I recommend you let the knowledgeable sommelier help you pick a perfect wine; I'm always ecstatic with the choice. This hidden gem is probably one of the best places in the east end. If anything, this restaurant is a strong contender on my Montreal favorites list. Good: The decor is stylish and has a nice ambiance. The service was quick and attentive. You can really see the creativity and effort put into each plate as they were all unique and tasty. During the summer time, they have a nice spacious terrace for outdoor seating, and it still feels very cozy. Oh, and definitely get the oysters! What a wonderful experience! Everything about this place was top notch - the food, the service and the ambience. We had the red snapper tar tar ($16?), burrata plate with cashews ($20) and for our main, shared the lobster and pork dish ($85). Each dish was excellent. To be clear, the lobster and pork dish was meant to be shared, so that $85 was for both of us. We sat at the bar but the service we received was better than most places. Our cute waiter patiently described each of the dishes ( in English) and made some great recommendations. We felt so welcomed. I can't wait to go back! We made reservations on a Friday night at 9 pm for three people, When we got there our table wasn't ready and we had to wait. The guys were so hungry and after about fifteen minutes of waiting they decided they wanted to go eat at the pizzeria next door. I think one waiter saw that he had gone to check if the pizzeria had a table available because when he came back a waiter came up to us to tell us that our table was ready and even gave us a glass of bubbly each (it was like cava but from a different region in Spain). We had the focaccia bread. It was warm and soft. It was so good we ordered a second round but also because the duck tartare we ordered didn't come with any bread or chips. We also had the grilled octopus with fingerling potato, olives, and burnt pepper yogurt. with fermented white beet, black garlic, lemon and rice chips. I've had better grilled octopus. We also had two pasta dishes. The first was tomato farfalle with duck consommé, poultry meatballs, fennel and kale. The consommé was tasty but we didn't have spoons. I did dip the foccaccia in the broth. The second pasta dish was the garganelli pasta with lamb, cauliflower, pistachio, and cheese. The lamb was delicious but the pasta was a bit undercooked for my liking. Lastly we shared the short rib and the beef sirloin. The meats were probably the best thing we ate that night. Overall the food was good but it didn't wow me and I do not think i would go back. read more

Best meal of our eating tour around Montreal. Every aspect was solid: the wine/cocktails, the service, the space itself. But the true star was the food. We planned on the tasting menu but went ala carte because all the smaller plates looked too good to miss. A perfect brunch! This is why... Upon walking into the restaurant, we were greeted by a wonderful smell of a wood fired grill. Already it felt comforting and lovely. Not to mention the kind & polite gentleman who greeted us. Looking around(I'm an observer) I noticed how nice and different architecturally this restaurant is. Modern, but still with a cozy, and rustic to it. Not fancy, simply rustic. We had a lovely table of two looking towards the open kitchen seeing the hard working staff. Because the kitchen was quite close to our table, we had an extra hit of a fireplace smell. Lovely! We ordered(to share!) a monkey bread(Or pull apart bread) that was served alongside of a lemon sweet cream. For those that are not familiar with monkey bread, it's little sweet rounds of dough rolled in cinnamon & sugar baked together. Since it's sticky, you pull it apart with your hands. Yes it's messy.. but worth every lick of your fingers. Delicious! I ordered a hot chocolate(prepared to perfection!!) Could be a tad warmer, but it was still quite delicious. Now to eat.. I ordered a Croque Madame served with a perfectly cooked fried egg on top of two delicious crusty perfectly toasted(On their wood grill!) sandwich of Béchamel sauce and a lovely Coppa ham. Outstanding! Along side was a coleslaw(It was OK!) and a tender oh so fresh spinach salad. Delicious! We also ordered a dish which had two perfectly poached eggs, a lovely and delicate Hollandaise sauce on top of two slices of perfectly toasted country bread. Superb! Overall our experience at Hoogan & Beaufort was perfect. Two little things that I would hope they change soon, the server was a bit slow yet very kind and polite. Do keep in mind the restaurant is situated a bit out of the way and somewhat in a remote area. Don't let that turn you off. whether you go by car, foot, or any other way. It's well worth the mileage. What a wonderful evening to celebrate my husband's birthday! Everything was spot on! From the place itself, to the drinks, to the service and to the food! We were blown away! They offer a tasting menu (70$) with wine pairing (45$) but we opted à la carte because we wanted to try as much different plates as possible. Plus the wine pairing summed up to 2 1/2 glasses of wine per 45$. In the other hand, we opted for a bottle of red wine that came highly recommended by the sommelier. We were very happy with it! Here's what we ordered: Grilled focaccia, warm oysters, albacore tuna, grilled octopus, two different plates of homemade pastas and a beef strip loin. This place is incredible! What a great all around experience ambiance, service and food! If you are staying in downtown it is definitely worth the car ride! The open wood burning fire plays an important part in all of their dishes and gives off a great aroma which plays perfectly into your dining experience. I had the sweetbreads appetizer which was amazing. They were cooked perfectly with a crisp exterior and served with some radish and mustard garnish. My wife had the octopus appetizer which was great but the burnt yogurt sauce was unreal, absolutely brillant! The veal chop was my main course served with fava beans and vegetables, cooked to perfection. My wife had the Cornish hen which was also phenomenal. This is my first visit, but definitely not my last. Very impressed with the dishes I tried, the service as well the gorgeous space. The restaurant was actually a little hard to find. Tucked away in the Angus shops, we parked street side and walked over to the beautiful light up space you can spot from Molson street. As soon as we walked in, this overwhelming feeling of warmth and comfort instantly came over me. The space is tastefully decorated, with minimalism and class. Everything revolves around the open kitchen, which stands out by its burning flame. Upon arrival, the waiter explained they use the flame to "burn" the food, a technique they've mastered for adding just the right amount of flavour without the burnt taste. The menu follows an Italian inspiration, with entres, primi and secondi plates. Although I would say the cuisine was much more of international fusion, than purely Italian. That said, we started with fire grilled focaccia, which was nice. For entres we tried a fusion of the topinambour and the Quebec mozzarella, the former won this round. We then continued with the Parisian gnocchi and lamb collier ravioli. The ravioli really did steal the show here. And finally we ended with the beef short ribs, cooked to perfect with all of its juices. The portions were not huge (which I like) and the food was truly rich in flavour. My review wouldn't be complete without a compliment on the excellent service we received. A table filled with foodies and a pregnant lady, we definitely weren't easy to manage. But, our waiter did an outstanding job of answering all our questions and guiding our choices. The downside is the A/C units have a loud hum, and there's no music outside. The service was friendly and consistent, although not the most well informed about the wines. Still, the chef was very creative in offering equally delicious substitutes to accomodate a shellfish allergy at our table, since two items on the menu contained shellfish. The flavors were fresh and seasonal, different textures were thoughtfully mixed together with each service. The plating was exquisite. We were served at a pace that did justice to digestion. I called a few days prior to inquire about the Vday menu and the person on the phone was extremely friendly and helpful, he was opening the restaurant but took the time to go over the menu items with me and explain. Then we got there for dinner, we were offered a regular table or the table next to the kitchen which is open. We chose next to the kitchen so we got to watch everyone in action. We ordered the 7 course meal off the Valentine's day menu with one wine pairing. The kitchen ran so smooth, even at the end when the staff was cleaning, they did an amazing job. The chef was extremely nice he made sure he came by to wish us a good night before he left. The food was incredible and all the waiters/waitresses were very polite and efficient. I try not to set my expectations too high when I hear about a restaurant that is generating lots of buzz for fear that it won't live up to the hype. That being said sometimes I just can't help getting excited. That was the case most recently with Hoogan and Beaufort, a restaurant that had long been on my list of places to try. Hoogan and Beaufort is located in the old Angus Yards. If you are driving there is plenty of parking available on the street and it is all free. If you are coming by transit then your best bet is to go to Prefontaine metro and walk up. There might also be a bus that goes north from the metro but you'll have to check that. The interior is beautiful with its high ceilings and exposed beams. The design can best be described as industrial. They have an open kitchen so you can see the everything that is going on while they prepare your food. If you are only two you might want to consider sitting at the bar which looks directly onto the kitchen so you can see the cooks working their magic. At this restaurant the menu is small and focused. They are one of those places that likes to prepare a few dishes very well. The main appeal of the menu offerings is that lots of the food is cooked over an open fire so that imparts a smoky flavour to it. In fact you can smell that fire going from the moment you walk in. It lets you know that you are in for a treat! We started with burnt focaccia which was delicious. As you can imagine it has a charred taste to it and the focaccia itself was wonderfully fresh and almost delicate in texture. We also split some appetizers of grilled mushrooms and grilled squid. The squid's texture was perfect and there were rice chips with it that added a nice crunch. The mushrooms had a smoky flavour from being grilled. I followed this up with strozzapretti with chorizo and squid. The chorizo was spiced perfectly and the pasta was freshly made so it was very delicious. There didn't seem to be much squid but I did enjoy the meal as a whole. I finished that off with a panna cotta with short bread and mango sorbet. This was the climax to a wonderful meal. The short bread was flaky and buttery while the panna cotta had excellent texture and taste. They had used real vanilla beans to flavour it instead of extract and that definitely made a difference. Every dish's plating was absolutely gorgeous. The service was the one downside for me. We had a bit of a wait at times between courses or when we wanted to place an order. While the waiters were friendly enough they definitely could have been faster. It wasn't the worst service that I have experienced but it definitely wasn't one of the better ones either. When it comes to prices I found that the appetizers and desserts were a little expensive given their size. The mains were more fairly priced though. That being said when you want to treat yourself or celebrate a big occasion the splurge is worth it because the quality of the dishes was very high. It has been a long time since I enjoyed a restaurant meal as much as I enjoyed the one I had at Hoogan and Beaufort. It definitely deserves all the hype that it gets and is definitely worth the visit. read more

This place is amazing. We are two picky New Yorkers who have eaten at some of the best restaurants in the world...Hoogan et Beaufort would be amongst the top 10 on our list. Definitely go. Great service and delicious smells emanating from the open kitchen. read more
