Last night we biked out to Espace Public in Hochelaga, near Antidote and Acme, and a raft of other old school tavernes that range from divey to scary. Espace Public is neither. It's got a tiny patio out front on Ontario and then about 30 seats indoors. It's dark, warm and woody like most brew pubs, with a chalkboard menu showcasing a couple of delicious in house beers and a couple other local brew selections and some small tasteful tasty snacks. The hoppy sour wasn't my favourite but the raspberry sour was really great, and the list in general was well-balanced when I was there - cool sours, classics IPAs, stouts, a blonde - really something for everyone. Super friendly cool staff, chill local crowd, slightly punk vibe making the brew pub less folksy and twee, less hipster and more appropriate to the surroundings. Really dug it and loved exploring this area a bit more in the light of the setting sun, with the end of summer in the air.

The guy knew every detail of the menu inside and out, breaking down the ingredients like a pro and recommending wine pairings that were 100% dead-on for what we ordered. There were a few things on the tasting menu with items I'm not usually fond of, but I figured this is the place that is going to make it work so just do it. And they certainly made it work. The food was so tasty I forgot to take pictures of most of the courses. It was all delicious, even the rhubarb dessert (I really don't like rhubarb and while I wouldn't order this dessert by choice, I was happy to eat it). Our experience overall was great. While we waited a long time to get our drink orders and the first round from the tasting menu, everything else came out at normal intervals. However, by the time we were done and contemplating a dessert beverage, we were informed that there was a time limit on the table and they'd have to check if they could get us drinks or if we'd need to give up the table. While I'm totally understanding of limiting the time because some people just loiter, I did not feel like we took a lot of extra time, so perhaps there's some timing that's a bit off. B and I ended up sitting outside on the benches that were setup. It was somewhat romantic with the hanging lights. The benches were in a good layout so it didn't feel like it was too crammed etc. Definitely a great place to have a gathering with friends on a hot day. Server was very friendly. B said the beer was pretty good. He said it was not too hoppy and yes it was definitely better than most craft brewery from BC (where we are from). He was impressed. He said he would go back for sure. I have to say Montreal has some really good craft brewery and you know that they don't cut corners like many of the craft brewery back home in BC that is why their flavor is much more apparent and the beer itself is less hoppy.
