I am a self-proclaimed presidential history nerd visiting from Texas. I've read a biography on…read moreevery president in order through Truman, and my bucket list includes visiting where each was born and their final resting places. Of course, I also make it a point to visit presidential libraries, national historic sites, etc. I've visited dozens of locations across multiple states. This museum is obviously not your "typical" presidential library (part of the national archive system), but still extremely impressive. It centers more on Stark County and its history defined by its people combined with a "hands on" science center downstairs for kids. Janet at the front told me it was because McKinley loved children and science. Listen, like I said above... I've been to dozens of presidential sites and this by far is top five most impressive! Not because of the presidential stuff...I'm talking about the museum in general. I was encouraged to see the exhibit on the segregation "that built Stark County's black community". It's nice to see these issues front and center. The exhibit honored black educators, public servants, and other important community members. The history of "red lining" was particularly informative. Even though the McKinley gallery is somewhat small...there are impressive pieces throughout. Like a rocking chair from his front porch... Including a photo of him sitting in it, a 32 caliber revolver identical to the one used to assassinate the president, a lot of campaign and inauguration memorabilia, and McKinley's top hat and cane were some of the more goosebump inducing pieces Don't miss the cool story about Ida McKinley's diamond tiara having been sold on the TV show pawn stars, But more than 400 individuals and groups donated to purchase it back. And, don't get me started on the street of shops from the 1800s. It's probably the most impressive exhibit I have seen in ANY museum in my lifetime. Every time I visit a presidential history site... I am overwhelmed with gratitude for people like staff and volunteers at these museums. I'm grateful to all who had the foresight to preserve and maintain our history. If I'm ever in Canton again... My family will definitely visit.

A disappointing experience at this museum which bills itself as the McKinley presidential library…read moreand museum. It is neither. It is a kids' modest science center with a big dose of history about the local county. I guess it's possible they have his papers somewhere but approximately 5 percent of the public museum is about him. I hate to be negative about museums but I was truly shocked. It costs $17 to get in which makes me think that hey are struggling but who knows. Worst presidential site I have been to. Go to the Garfield site- much better. (They do have a nice fake dinosaur.)

We had a blast visiting the Northern Ohio Railway Museum! It's one thing to read about trolleys and…read moreelectric railways in a book, but seeing them in person is so much better. My family was fascinated by the old streetcars and learning about how Cleveland's Rapid system started. The museum has a huge collection of restored rail cars and it's a very peaceful, outdoor setting. It's one of the best educational things to do in Medina County. If you're a railfan or just looking for a cool local spot to explore on a Saturday, put this on your list. Affordable, educational, and run by people who truly care about preserving history. Rides are only offered on the second and fourth Staurdays of each month.

Here is a trolley, interurban, streetcar museum in an area one would least expect, in fact many…read morefolks in the area do not even know of its existence. Only open one day a week, the museum has two sets of buildings containing a number of their rolling stock and another group of rolling stock exposed to the elements. I totally enjoyed talking about our experiences visiting other rail museums in the country. In the future, the museum hopes to run a track with a live overhead wire and one can see the work in progress. Each of the housed rolling stock has a placard with all the information a railfan could want. The museum is free and one is given a personal tour with a member.

It's a place that you wouldn't think about visiting but is actually very rewarding to see why and How AA started. Free admission but takes donations. The house is in great shape. Many original pieces to see and others re done. Overall a great little stop.

They have older airplanes that you can see, and different rooms dedicated to different things such as war items and art. It was really interesting to go learn and all the staff there were super helpful and more than happy to share their knowledge with us.

Hower House is a historical home in downtown Akron that is stunning and unique both inside and out…read more It's quite surprising inside with spacious rooms on three levels and gorgeous woodwork and chandeliers. The rooms are lavishly furnished and decorated. The Christmas tour is especially good this year (2025). I highly recommend a visit if you haven't seen this lovely house. There is a small free parking lot in the back (enter from S. Forge St.) and then you walk around the house to enter at the front door. The gift shop on the lower level has some very nice merchandise and is fun to visit after touring the house.

The home has lots of beautiful decor and they had recently decorated for the holidays (a little early, but I wasn't disappointed to see how lovely of a job they had done). No photos are allowed inside. I found this to be disappointing. The gift shop was closed the day I visited because the employee didn't show up. The carriage house was also closed, because something was needing to be fixed. So I can't comment on either of those two things. Apparently most days they offer coffee and tea, but not the day I was there. The house had a delicious aroma of coffee brewing, though. The Hower family was very well-traveled. I enjoyed seeing items they had brought back from the many countries they had visited to adorn the beautiful home. I couldn't figure out if the tour was supposed to be guided or not. The docents kind of followed me around and told me facts about certain things, but I could have sworn they said it was self-guided when I walked in. It was fine, and certainly a nice gesture, but sometimes I like kind of wandering at my own pace. The docents are also reluctant to talk about the ghost stories. There have been a variety of things published about this house being haunted, and I remember a couple grad students lived at the house as care-takers when I was in school. They had heard and seen some interesting things at night. When I asked a couple of the volunteers about the things that go bump in the night I got a very quick "This house is not haunted" reply. Hmmm......

Came here for Mothers Day. Worth the visit to see the house and gardens…read more We were told when you come around Christmas there are not as many rooms open for the house tour. But on Mother's Day we got to see a lot of the rooms we never saw. And got to ask more questions and take our time a bit more. All around good experience. You want to see as many of the rooms as possible. Pro tip. If you are doing a house and garden tour leave the house thru the front door. This way you don't have to back track the gardens. Out the front door take a right to head along the back of the house and the gardens. Don't miss the greenhouse. The Japanese garden and the really all the gardens are beautiful. It's a nice walk. You can definitely get your steps in. It's a nice afternoon. We spent about 2.5 hours. Could have spent longer. But we were hungry. This was a good experience overall and fun afternoon.

Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens is such a beautiful place to visit all year round. I remember going…read morehere several times as a child for field trips and I have always been fascinated with this home. Several years ago I found out that they have special tours at Christmas time where you can tour the house and each room has a different theme and you can also tour the grounds where they have Christmas light displays. I believe the tickets this past Christmas or $28 each which goes towards keeping up the estate and grounds. I feel like that's a fair price. There is so much to see in the estate and out on the grounds and I suggest coming here during the year as well for a regular tour. The Christmas decor is so beautiful each room in the estate is typically sponsored by a local business. It's so interesting to see some of the old furniture, dishes, light fixtures, truly whatever you can think of it's all so beautiful. They even have a greenhouse on the property where you can go to purchase plants, especially poinsettias for the Christmas season. They have a little concession stand where they sell things like hot chocolate, coffee, wine and beer, cookies, chili, soft pretzels, etc. Santa even stops by during certain hours where you can visit him. Overall, this is one of my favorite places to visit during the Christmas season and as a child I loved coming here during the year.

BF and I did research before coming here so we knew what to expect. They give very limited tours…read moreand the areas are not all restored or furnished as such. Knowing this, I took a day off on a Friday to come to their 1pm tour. No one else was there so it ended up being a private tour for my BF and me. Our docent Elaine was a straight G for showing us all the areas (and more!), giving us colorful background, really emphasizing the significance of the place and her passion to maintain and preserve. While it's true that the entire upstairs have been converted to offices, Christmas displays and bridal suites, the first floor, and some extras (library, dinning room, sunroom, German pub room) were all still intact and interesting to tour. The staff was very welcoming and it genuinely was interesting to learn about Alliance, the engineering company and the descendants. The admission cost is $10 per person cash and I thought it was worthwhile for the hour+ tour. The grounds had an echo chamber that greatly amused us! Recommend stopping by here and checking out the cute antique shops in downtown Alliance! I had a wonderful day trip here.

We were there for the holiday weekend tour and it was really crowded with not great crowd-management and not really much information about the home or the family. There was a brief hand-out with some basic information about each room, but really nothing really sparked my attention or jumped out here. I am still not sure what the family did or aware of any specific hidden gems in the mansion or anything significant about the architecture. The most interesting little detail were the trolls and owls carved into the molding upstairs in the library. I don't know, but maybe if we came back on a day that wasn't packed to the brim with people I would have felt more engaged? Or maybe more time to talk to the docents? For ten bucks per adult, I don't really think it was worth it. There were significant repairs needed and the house has not fully been restored. There are far more detailed and interesting tours of historic homes in the northeast Ohio area to visit. Either way, now we can say we've been and my son DID get to visit Santa Claus with virtually zero wait to do so. That's a win.
