Parking for this is limited to parallel parking along Jefferson. Across the street from the north end is an area with multiple horseshoe pits and a water fountain. No crosswalks were marked for crossing. Likewise, no small bridge allows the south and north ends of the park to be connected. Visitors have to go to the streets to cross between sides. There seems to be plenty of space and still some large shade trees on the south end. A decent park, but a few design problems keep it from being more useful. Review #2557

Very cool sight. There were a lot of great trails including a mile long one around the buffalo area, as well as a fully paved bike trail that goes through the woods. It was a lovely ride. The bathrooms left something to be desired as usually 2/3 toilets were clogged and the hardware in general could use some renovation. There are private showers in the back restrooms which were a nice change but having to continuously hit the water button (and it pauses every time you hit it) was a different, not so pleasant experience. Overall, this was a decent campground, fairly busy. A lot of the large buildings were closed or intended for renting out. There was no nature center. There is a lake which offer paddle and other boats for rent. There is also parking for horse & buggies away from the RV sites. Outside of the horse & buggy and a summer camp area, we never found the primitive camp sites but we didn't exactly go looking for them either.

The Oakhurst Mansion was built in 1894 by George and Frances Ball in the Arts and Crafts style. The Balls were avid readers and created the Blue Book of Canning, that teaches food preservation. This remarkably maintained house is open for self guided tours. The interior contains all original woodwork, trim details and some furniture. Family history is abundant throughout the home. My granddaughter enjoyed the interactive activities throughout the house, especially canning in the kitchen and creating a family tree. Immaculate gardens surround the house. The garden is filled with oak trees and other dense hardwoods. Paths meander through the garden. There was one clerk present during our visit that checked us in and invited us to explore the house and grounds. She was friendly. Admission was included in the $15 tickets that we purchased at the Bob Ross Experience (but can also be purchased on line). There is ample parking in the lot northwest of Oakhurst. Accessible ramps are located at the east entrance of the home. They are opened Wednesday - Sunday.

There are nice paved paths that easily connect to the Cardinal Greenway or just a short jog to the White River. The paths through Oakhurst Gardens are not really long enough to do your full run, but they are a nice little detour from typical sidewalks! I would highly recommend the garden paths for an easy stroll on a nice day. This is a safe and free area to enjoy a nice walk. Even in February the gardens are well kept and the ornamental sidewalk designs provide enjoyable scenery. I am looking forward to going back as spring awakens the blooms in the garden. Another plus about parking/visiting this area for a walk or run is that the Minnetrista museum building is unlocked during business hours and you can sneak in to use the restroom!

On the south end of West Street, there is a baseball park next to the parking lot. When there isn't a game, that leaves lots of spaces for visitors to the other parts of the park. The Bark Park is located back from the parking lot in a shaded area cleared for the dogs to play without overheating. The Wilderness Park consists of a shelter, restrooms, and two trails: One for fitness with work stations to exercise; and a nature trail that goes for about 1.5 miles through the woods. Unfortunately, all the heavy rains have left the trail quite muddy and without a more artificial base for walking, I was unable to travel far if I wanted to keep from getting mud all over. Still, it may be a nice get away once the drier days of summer come along. Yes, it is nice to see a park dedicated to more adult endeavors since there seems to be plenty of places for kids to go. The aquatic center features a water slide, swimming pool, and a splash center with lots of shade tents within the fenced area. The playground on the north side of the street seems ideal for smaller children. On the south side of the street by the parking area, there is a huge two-story playground with towers and walkways and a long slide from the top level to the ground!
