Pricing is way to high, especially if the membership is only for one person. I'd gladly join again,but at $88 a month is more than twice the price and the equipment is not the best. read more

I worked out there today. The treadmills have tvs on them which is nice. Just make sure to bring your own towel.

Worse feeling ever is knowing I'm overpaying for services. Somehow every time i decide to come the court is reserved. For 3 months the kids play Monday and Thursday. My only off days. Right now there's 6 old men who have the court reserved for pickle ball. I brought my son and his friends to play and they have it reserved till 3! They also don't care for the basketball players. This happens at all the YMCA's I know but it's saddening. I pay $136 a month and can only come maybe 6 times a month. At least 2 out of 6 times this happens. There's never anything reserved about the weight area or pool? Make more room for your member and all the events you have. read more

This is a really great Y. The pool is really nice and there are usually two or three lanes roped off for laps, lessons, etc. We have come at all different days of the week, various times and have never found it to be too crowded. It is an outdoor pool but during cooler weather they put a done over it so it can be used all year. Towels and lockers are available for use. The gym is very large with tons of weights and machines. There are lots of classes you can sign up for and there is an indoor track. read more

I've been a member of several gyms, mostly big name facilities, this is *by far* my favorite. They have everything I want including machines, classes, personal trainers, pool, sports, an AMAZING summer program for kids (my son loved it), boxing bag room and spacious locker room areas. My favorite part of the gym is the indoor track. It's a 1/10 mile oval. As far as price... This is the most expensive gym I've been a member of.. ask about the 20/20, it helps especially if you need a family membership. read more

Have to give this location credit for doing a lot with the space they have. From the outside it really doesn't look that large, however once you enter you can see the two floors layout. Bottom floor has Basketball courts, weights, spin bikes, etc. Top floor is primarily machines and the track. Really clean facility especially when compared to some of the other YMCA's. Outdoor swimming pool has a large area dedicated to kids/families and play, but they make sure to have a couple lanes for people that want to swim laps. In winter they put up a tent, haven't been then so I can't say how warm the water is. Pool is always very clean. Anytime there is a chemical problem they are quick to get everyone out and take the necessary precautions to treat the water and get it back to safe levels (has only happened once while I was there). Just took my first Y-Ride class this week (same thing as spin or RPM) and the class was excellent. Great music selection and an instructor that keeps you motivated to keep working. When you get there make sure to sign up for the class, as if you forget and they run out of spots, somebody that did sign in can boot you. I really wish they had a racquetball court, however they are similar to the other gyms (Gold's comes to mind) where they have some locations with basketball, some with swimming and some with racquetball. Outside of this they are really a great location with friendly staff members. By the way if you get a Birmingham YMCA membership you get access to all of the YMCA's in the area. read more

The gym is open, nice and clean. Cardio equipment is spot on and the indoor track is great. However, they don't always make the best use of its space. There are several large rooms for classes which are almost always empty. The strength training area is set up primarily with pin style machines, and are overly redundant. The biggest issue is for those that enjoy bodybuilding style workouts. There are very few Hammer Strength machines, and those in place were poorly chosen. Pre weighted EZ curl bars and a reverse hyperextension machine would be greatly appreciated. The decline bench was removed but finally reappeared. Thanks for that! read more

When my husband and I moved to Birmingham in October 2012, we joined a different gym for a month just to check it out. It was the worst month of my exercising, adult life. Okay, that's a little dramatic but still. It was a nasty place which very little equipment and zero group exercise classes were offered. When that month was over, we decided to check out the YMCA. We were immediately given a tour of the facilities by a nice young man and I was sold. Nice cardio machines, a spacious weights area, huge group exercise rooms both upstairs and downstairs, and well kept locker rooms. Needless to say, we signed up that day and haven't regretted it for a moment. What takes this review from 4 stars to 5 for me is the Zumba class that Denise teaches on Friday mornings at 9:30. As someone who danced for 15 years (ballet, pointe, jazz, and hip hop), I've been searching for the 'perfect' dance class since college and I've been disappointed time after time. I've taken Zumba classes in Huntsville, Madison, Nashville, Atlanta, and Auburn and I absolutely mean it when I say that the Zumba class at the Hoover YMCA is the best I've ever taken. Denise is a fantastic instructor whose energy is contagious, which I feel is necessary to teach a class like Zumba. I've even arranged my work schedule to where I don't have to work every Friday morning just so I can make this class - that's how much I like it. If you live in the Hoover area and are looking for a gym, I'd say this YMCA is top notch and worth every penny. read more

We have been members of the Hoover Ymca for 2 years. It is very convenient for us. This location offers a wide variety of classes which I enjoy while my 3 boys use the gym to shoot baskets. We also take advantage of the swim team during the summer. This is a great way to get kids out of the house and get some exercise while enjoying the water on the hot summer days. The front desk is always friendly and the staff that teaches classes are great! Ymca offers a lot for your kids all year round. Great way to try a Little if everything before paying the high prices of club sports. The only thing I'm not loving is the pool location. It is pretty much right in parking lot. Wish it wS able to be located behind the building where your not the center of the parking lot. Otherwise every thing else is good read more

I visited this YMCA on 03/06/2019 and absolutely fell in love with this location. Although I live nearly 20 minutes from the Hoover YMCA, I will make it a point to visit this location more often, when I can. Passed by this place too many times before deciding to go in and join. To the eye, it looks like its packed from the outside, however once you enter you realize there is a good amount of space to allow for a positive experience. They offer plenty of classes and activities to keep your family on the move. Great staff to back up the location as well. read more

Honestly I can only think of 1 thing I would change. If it was open 24 hours that would be great. Other then that. plenty of equipment to use. Plenty of weights. Plenty of room. Plenty of classes. A pool. Basketball courts. Big locker rooms that are clean. And it is so super cheap compared to other gyms in the area. Bad bad , I feel so upset. I'd just cancelled my contract. We're not come usually but everytime me and my boys come here, the lady that work there Claudia , that's her name. She always has us problems to just past the front desk to go inside , I thinks she's racist. Because we're Asian. We're pay money to go here to have fun , relax , but she makes me and family not comfortable every times we come, look like shes not welcome us. read more

Who could ask for a more all-inclusive facility than this? Basketball gyms, free weights, machine weights, cardio rooms with ellipticals, treadmills and step machines, workout classes of all types, pool and an indoor track. What more could you want? Granted, when we went in to join there were a couple of high-school seeming kids there to take our application and sign us up, so they didn't really seem to be totally on top of things ,but who can begrudge a high-schooler a summer job at such a great place? The Hoover YMCA is a disgrace. This was my first experience with any Y and it will be my last. Opening up in Hoover right next to my house and competitive family membership rates I decided to sign up but what a mistake. The facility is decent. Few minor faults, such as co-ed whirlpool and sauna. But the workers are ridiculous. Its almost like they go out of their way to be rude to you. I am a nice guy and would never try to get confrontational with anyone but these people ask for it. From the front desk people to the managers they are all something else. Dont waste your time with this one. read more
