As a tavern I had a great time. Friendly bar staff who make you feel very welcomed. I tried the Hot Buttered Run which was a unique cocktail of warn apple cider, Captain Morgan rum and a special buttery mix. Sitting at the bar I watched at least 30 people specifically come up to the bar and request that drink. I was tempted and tried it. It was soooooo good and smooth!!!I could have had several. Great atmosphere! The only slight negative element, the kitchen closes at 7:45pm and depending on the night they close somewhere between 9pm-10pm. In all I had a great time.

We heard about the old Jim while on a tour and another part of the city. It is reportedly Tasmania's oldest operating pub, having opened in 1807. That sort of history, we figured the fish and chips had to be really good! After walking over, we found our way into the pub side. We were quickly greeted and grabbed drinks, including a spectacular, hot buttered rum, and a local beer. After a few minutes, we were ushered away to the dining room, which sat just on the other side of the wall. As expected, it's seafood, heavy, with a good number of options. We had fish and chip, which were honestly some of the best we had in all of Australia. Everything was crispy, inside and very flavorful. The baked scallops were absolutely phenomenal! The presentation was right on, they were great to look at even better to eat. They had charred broccolini that was fantastic. It was a nice red sauce on it. Didn't add a tongue, but the whole thing was delicious. A little bit of char goes a long ways. As a man dish, we shared a beef cheek, Wellington. We're always on a lookout for things we haven't seen before, and this was it. It was done perfectly. The pastry on the outside was a good mix of crunchy and chewy, and the beef cheek inside was spectacular One of the kids had the pork belly, and it too was quite nice. The service was friendly, and the whole ambience of the place was very nice. We were really glad to have heard about this place from someone at our hotel, and it was well worth the trip over for a pretty casual dinner that felt more upscale than it was. If we find ourselves back in Tasmania, someday, this is going to be a spot we won't go to again!

    Seafood chowder! Excellent!

Was in town for two days as our ship docked in Hobart for 48 hours. Decided to come in and check this place out because it's known for being one of the oldest liquor license bars in Australia.. I had the fish and chips which were very good! My husband had the seafood chowder and it was amazing.! It's very nautical looking. The only bad thing we could say about the place is that the bartender/owner who wasn't the friendliest to us. Although all of the Australians that came in, he was talking with and joking with. This was surprising because all the Australians we know on the street and ownership have been more than friendly.

Great spot near the harbor! Seafood chowder in a bread bowl was amazing; topped it off with a pint for a perfect little lunch.

NOTHING was available for a table of six! In the end we managed to get an Irish pub in the city. When we turned up, it was a case of taking a look, shuddering and going 'Great. What now?' Thankfully, one of us had the temerity to ask the staff there where there was something a bit... Nicer. They recommended the Pumphouse just up the road. We walked up and to our delight, found a really nice, clean hospitable environment with a spacious aesthetic. Sitting next to the window we ordered some drinks. I ordered a mojito (a fond favourite from my time in Northern Italy) and it was quite nice, slightly too sweet for me but from my experiences with mojitos, it was a good one. I just don't have a sweet tooth so I prefer the more limey ones as opposed to the more sugary ones. Only a minor quibble. We then started ordering our dinner. I decided on the wallaby porterhouse (medium rare) with chimi churri and pangrattato ($17) and a side smashed potatoes with herb salt. ($9) It was amazing but the very small serve of wallaby was not great value for $17. When you say 'porterhouse', you usually think of a nice thick steaky chunk of meat not a half palm slice of meat. The flavours were just right and the aoili-style condiment with the meat went down very nicely with the smashed potatoes which were (I suspect) double fried to perfection. Golden, crunchy exterior with a lovely soft buttery inside. The only reason it didn't deserve a five star review in my opinion was the meat came alone. If it was a super-posh place that serves each dish alone, well, fine, be all wanky and all that but this was just an upper-class pub. It should have at least come with some kind of salad or string beans or SOMETHING. Or been bigger. 4/5.

Then again perhaps they just don't do vegan food well there and can only be trusted to do well on their specialties. That's why I gave this four stars -- because I get a sense that most of their menu items they probably do well, but there's a few duds on the menu are that are probably not in the chefs wheelhouse.

I'd seen so many photos of the hip fitout that I had my assumptions about the menu, and those assumptions were way off. What St Albi is, secretly, but far more accessibly for the locals, is a gastropub. The menu is tried and true pub style, fancied up around the edges. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, and once my dining pal and I had gotten our heads around this, our meals were awesome. I'd go so far as to say my steak was the best steak I've had in Hobart. Yep, I'm gonna make that call. But having said that, I didn't head to St Albi that night expecting to eat a steak. My friend and I started with an entree and a half each, because we both needed to try the chowder but also another thing each. The chowder was out of this world delicious, and I'm pretty sure it had some sage in it (or just the right combination of other herbs and spices that tricked me into thinking it was sage), but I've been back since just for the chowder and it didn't have quite that same flavour to it. I was a little disappointed, but the chowder is still super, super delicious and comes with an enormous prawn hanging out in it (entertaining but awkward to eat, nobody look at me please). I won mains hands down with my steak, which I forced my friend to try as well (ok I didn't have to force her very hard). I chose the Cox coffee rub for it because I was intrigued. I chose medium rare because that's how steak should be cooked. And I chose some duck fat potatoes and honey brown mushrooms for sides because I couldn't not. Seriously, so good. But so much food. Because this is a gastropub, not a fine dining restaurant. If someone had explained this to me before I went, maybe I wouldn't have had 1.5 entrees before my enormous main, leaving less than zero room for my dessert (yes, even my dessert stomach abandoned me) and giving me actual pains because I was so full (and yet still got most of my sides to take away and devour the following day with some scrambled eggs because I'm a genius). I love you, St. Albi, now that I properly understand you. Maybe next time I'll know how to leave room for one of your desserts?

The gin selection is exceptional and there's always a gin of the week, which is a great opportunity to try a gin you may not have encountered before. Society also now makes their own tonic syrup in house, and I believe they're the first place in Hobart to be doing that. ALL THE KUDOS! It's such a special sort of offering and shows how much they care about their drinks. Also back to gin again, Society do gin tasting platters... correct. Half nips of four different gins (be it a Tasmanian platter, an Australian platter or a tailored platter) with a splash of tonic and a garnish to suit each different gin. The raclette was delicious and a generous portion of melted and crispy raclette cheese and prosciutto over potatoes with a bit of salad for $15.
