On our last day in town, we finally had a chance to walk down here and check the place out. It turned out to be one of the more memorable spots we hit up. We were staying just above the wharf and spent about 20 minutes walking over. They had a great array of crusty, sweet and savory pastries, pies, and breakfast items. Perhaps the most impressive thing was the fact that their list of specials took up an entire chalkboard. Everything from sweet rolls too, wallaby and rabbit, pie, to some delicious eggs Benedict and a big English breakfast. They had something for everybody, and everything was really good! The place is housed in a relatively old building with a lot of character! Not so old that you're worried that you would find petrified things in the wall, but old enough that you definitely know the place has had a chance to fall over and won't. The staff was really nice, took great care of us and found us seats very quickly, despite the place being busy. All in all, this is a must check out spot whenever you are in town! read more

How could you not like this place!! This is the quintessential colonial bakery - oozes with charm in the midst of colonial Battery Point. Love this place. It has so many good things to try. You can choose to eat in or takeaway - separate counters - ordering at the counter is easy and staff have always been friendly. Order what you like from the display - the meat pies are excellent with real chucks of steak / beef. They have their own tomato relish, which is an good compliment to the savory pastries. The atmosphere, the vibe, is friendly and full of old time charm. The coffee is good. It's that simple. It's a lovely place to have a bite or more - cannot be passed by. read more

Go for the sweets, the savory pastries fell short in our estimations. There was table service though you pay your check at the counter. We found the scallops pie and beef savory pie uninspiring. Amazing food! Customer service was absurd. Definitely a take out only place :) As we were eating, while other customers were also eating, woman came up to us with her broom and told us they were closed (15minutes early) and didn't let us finish our tea. Along with this we mentioned that we did not receive our full order and once we mentioned it to the server we still did not receive our full order. To conclude this wonderful experience I was handed a cup covered in dust, hair and lint which I decided to use anyways since I was to uncomfortable asking for a new one. read more

This place is worth the short drive or walk from Salamanca Square as you will find the prices lower and the quality even better. Upon entering, you will find their takeaway section and bakery to the left. Loads of breads and sweet carb goodness await! On the right is the restaurant with two little bedrooms transformed into dining areas. A giant blackboard on the wall provides the daily menu. My party got the claypot with chorizo and beans, fritata and poached egg. It was good but the chorizo not especially spicy. The classic eggs Benedict was a reasonable size and tasty. My healthier dish of poached eggs, caramelized onions and spinach over sourdough bread along side rocket salad was perfect. Great flavour and the right amount. I would definitely be a regular here if I were a local. The only thing keeping this from five stars for me was the service. There was one waitress in particular with no patience for anyone. She rushed us through our order nearly running off and then I saw her give the same attitude to the table next to us. Other staff were more attentive given the busy time. Ordered salmon brie, scallop pie, pork bun, Nutella cheesecake and vegetables plate for 3 adults. There was a double order mistake for the cheesecake, we ordered one serving and two was served and charged accordingly. Haha we didn't know this was two portion as it was our first visit. Cup of hot water is extra charge at 1.50. quite pleased with the taste overall, especially the salmon, though the pork bun skin is tad too blah, too thick and hard. read more

During our first day in Hobart, we ventured here with the help of a Yelp search- the reviews seemed promising and we were all very keen for some fresh baked goodness. The lunch was truly flawless. The slow cooked beef pie- outstanding. One of the best pies I have ever tasted. The filling was delicious, the slowed cooked beef was so tender it felt as though it had ridden on the back of an angel's wings and the pastry was crumbly and scrumptious. My partner had the calzone (last one for the day) and my mum had the frittata, both of which were enjoyed immensely. Eager to try one of the many desserts in the window, we each chose something- and here's where the good review ends. The problem with offering so many desserts is that freshness is often compromised in order to make sure that there is enough of everything for the day. In my experience, some of the best restaurants I have been to around the world have small menus so that there is a guarantee that what is cooked is done well every singe time. My lemon meringue tart was very far from fresh- it had clearly been sitting in the fridge at least overnight so that the pastry was soggy and lacked the crumbly perfection I was seeking. The other tart ordered suffered the same fate though the brioche with cream and fruit seemed to be the best of them of the three we ordered. My advice would be to stay away from any of the tarts/desserts consisting of pastry-unless soggy is how you like it. Coffee and hot chocolate were great, though! read more

This is a wonderful little bakery come cafe. It is within easy walking distance of the Constitution Dock area, located in Battery Point, a quaint old historic part of Hobart. It has a great selection of pastries and some great hot breakfast/lunch options. The only drawback is that there is no flexibility with the menu choices. When I asked for an extra piece of toast with my poached eggs we were told that wasn't possible and was offered a bread roll instead? It does have excellent coffee! read more

I visited this excellent bakery twice on my Hobart visit & was pretty impressed each time. For starters the bakery is located in a very sweet area of Hobart, just up from Salamanca place (about a 10 min walk up hill) which feels like a quaint English village. It has a smaller takeaway area with the breads, pies & cakes on display & a large bright seating area with natural light streaming in from the large street facing windows. Everything is really reasonably priced ($12 for eggs benedict on brioche, $4.50 for a croissant with jam) & most importantly, delicious. If you're looking for something healthy, this is not the place for you. But if you're looking for exceptional pastries & sweet treats, get in ASAP. Although that being said, the portion sizes were just right & I didn't come off any of the meals feeling over-fed. The croissant was maybe the best I've ever had- so buttery & soft!! We also tried a lamb & rosemary pie (served with house made relish which was delicious), a berry cream cheese tart (spot on, not too sweet) & eggs Benedict (please remember this was two visits). Everything was excellent! My only extremely small gripes was the Benedict had a touch too much sauce & the coffee wasn't the best I've ever had (but still good). read more

Jackman & McRoss is the best neighborhood bakery I've been to, including those in Paris. The selection of breads, pastries, pies and desserts are amazing. Full breakfast dishes are both traditional and imaginative. One may dine inside or outside. Prices are very reasonable and the bakery is located in the lovely Battery Point neighborhood of Hobart. I came here as my last meal during a trip to Hobart as I had read many good things about this place, and had high hopes. While everything in the cabinet looked great our meals where pretty average. We got the scallop pie (duh) and pulled pork with kale and kumquat jam on pumpkin bread. The pie was good but we'd had several good pies during our trip and this was no better than the others. The pulled pork was a bit dry and the bread kind of like a very tough biscuit sadly as the flavours were good. The service was pretty non chalant and made you feel a bit unwelcomed. When I'm going for an extended car ride I need to pack a buffet. I'm just that kind of gal. So a stop at this highly recommended bakery was a no brainer. Try not to be so overwhelmed and stand in doorway with your mouth hanging open when you first walk in (not saying that it was me who did that but...okay, it was me) by the racks and cases full of breads, pastries, pies, tarts and eclairs. This is the kind of bakery that when you order fruit toast, you're getting a small loaf cut up, toasted and delivered to your table with lashings of butter. The pies were delicious, the tarts and slices amazing albeit too large to consume in a single sitting. The muffins were also quite good. By the time I actually made it to Port Arthur I was so full I thought I would burst. I'm actually disappointed I didn't have a chance to go back for a sit down breakfast. I dare you to try and walk in to this Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory of bakeries and walk out with a single item. As a final tip, you're an idiot if you don't try the salted caramel and dark chocolate slice. I'll just leave it there. read more

Should have listened to a local when they said this place was overhyped and touristy. I'm not sure if my friend and I just ordered the wrong things or if there's a speciality we should have gotten, but both of us were disappointed with this place. My coffee was weak and lacked flavour- I expect bakeries to have great coffee to go with baked goods but this was akin to the coffee you'd find in an airport kiosk. The bacon, avocado and egg roll that I went for tasted like it had been made off-site. The eggs were rubbery and the roll severely hard, as if it had been sitting behind the counter for several days. When I first visited Hobart, Jackman & McRoss was on my to-do list. I only had one morning in Hobart but it was occupied with the Salamanca Market followed by a traipse up a long and narrow set of stairs to Hampden Rd (worth a visit in itself for the classic architecture) to this famed bakery. I was not disappointed (and continue to not be disappointed on my return visits since I've moved here). The cabinets are full of delicious and ridiculous treats, both savoury and sweet. The buttery croissants are as big as your head. Savoury tarts come with (for example) slabs of pork belly slapped on top. Sweet tarts may be filled with things like white chocolate and mandarin. Everything is delicious and the prices aren't ridiculous. I haven't yet dined in here because it's always so busy (another good sign), but Jackman & McRoss continues to delight and excite this bakery fan. read more

Let me first preface this with prior to 2013, I had never been to Tasmania but Jackman & McRoss alone would be enough to convince me to move there. First off, lets start with the price of things. Where (in Melbourne anyway) could you get a full sized meal, drink and dessert pastry for under $20?! Secondly, the food here is easily food that you would pay more than $20 for. I went twice when I was in Tas. All of the food that I had was great - fresh produce, appropriately flavoured etc. The pie that I had was great, from memory I went with something quite traditional and it was easily one of the best pies I'd ever had. The "side" salad really was a meal in itself. All the veg. And there was the soup I got, beef and lentils, it was more like a stew and an amazing one at that. Then there's the dessert pastries. Fresh strawberry vanilla slice!? I'll stop drooling and reminiscing now. Franchise, but not, please? :) read more

So the food here is amazing. This is a little bakery/cafe. And everything is to die for. Except the coffee. The coffee here was undrinkable. I literally throw it out. But I am extremely coffee snob. So I would not depend on my word for the coffee. But the ignoring the coffee. This place is worth the visit. The almond croissant was a divine moment, where angels sing for you. We'd had a few people recommend this spot when we were planning a trip to Hobart, and I'm so glad we fit it in. Nice airy feel to the place, very bright and clean. The staff were affable, and very patient considering I had a screaming child (with her mother a few minutes' walk behind!) Great place to have a nice breakfast at. The meals are very big and well priced for their quality. The croissant I ordered was delicious and flakey not to mention it was bigger than my face and the butter to go with it was very delightful. I did not prefer the baguette as it was not traditional nor good. I recommend this to people who love a nice French breakfast. read more

We were incredibly impressed an this place should come up on Breakfast search as well. Although dubious at first as the meals looked pre-prepared in the glass, my wife an I both had incredible breakfasts. She had a delicious pie and I had a black bean, chorizo, spinach, poached egg deliciousness. Then we had some take away treats from the bakery. The choco berry tart was the best ever. We also had 2 loaves of bread which lasted longer than expected on out overland track trek. We are heading back when we come back through Hobart. read more
