this cemetery had been on my "to go to" list for years now, and i'm glad i finally made it to see the grand statues and headstones filled with rich history. due to the size, we drove slowly around the cemetery to do our own little tour, and i would definitely go again when the snow is gone read more

This is a do-not-miss in Burlington. Full of history, but you may have to read up a little on it before you go to get the whole picture. Lots of sculpture to check out, pretty views, interesting famous names that you might want to google, or just a sweet rolling-hilled walk on a nice day, this is worth a visit if you are in the Burlington area. Many friends who are Burlington natives recommended it to us and we were very glad we took the time to stop in here for a quick drive around before we headed back south. Hopefully someday we'll have a chance to explore it a little more. read more

Another great stop for those who like offbeat sites when traveling. This has to be one of the most unique cemeteries in the US. You have never seen more elaborately carved memorials than at this place. Given the local granite industry and history of Italian stone carvers it appears that everyone has tried to out do the others with their "headstones". This is worth a 30 minute stop to drive/ walk through to see the stone artistry. read more

This has to be the coolest cemetery ever, and that is coming from a girl from New Orleans (home of amazing graveyards). This cemetery dates back to 1895. Apparently, many Italian (and Scottish) stone cutters moved to Barre because of the large granite quarry. The tombstones are demonstrations of remarkable art. Several interesting pieces: the 8-9 foot tall string bass, the 4 foot across soccer ball, the 6 foot long race car, and my favorite--the kitty cat. There are portraits of the deceased carved in stone, Greek pillared structures, and lots of intricately carved Jesuses (Jesi?). If you are in Barre, you should really check out this beautiful cemetery. The artistry will take your breath away. read more

We were spending time in Vermont and some friends told us to visit the Hope Cemetery. An unusual suggestion but it was a good one. We stayed about an hour looking at the many works of Art that most people call headstones. It my sound strange be we really enjoyed our visit. read more

It's not often that I write a review for a cemetery but this is far more than your average. Think of Hope Cemetery as one of the finest sculpture gardens you will find in North America. There has been a tradition among the stone carvers of Barre that whenever one of their number or a close member of a family passes away, one of the sheds will donate the stone and allow workers to work on a memorial using company tools on the workers' own time. This has led to the creation of some incredible works of art. There are several replicas of well known pieces of European sculpture, in a variety of sizes. There are also an incredible variety of other memorials reflecting the lives and loves of those buried there. One of my favorites is walking around trying to figure out which angel is the most beautiful. I don't know if it might make you decide to visit but each year several plane loads of visitors, mostly from Italy, tour the cemetery in order to view the art. read more

Stopped here on our way back to Burlington. Had heard about it and wanted to experience it first hand. Drive around slowly and look at all the amazing headstone and mausoleums scattered around the vast grounds. headstone like you have never seen before. Soccer Balls, beds, race cars, pyramids. You name it they probably have it. Stop along the way. Apparently each stone carver in the Barre Quarries was given a slab to work on and wow they did. many Immigrant names. read more

Simply beautiful. Peaceful. Incredibly interesting. We toured the Rock of Ages Visitor's Center first and purchased the $5 audio file/map of the granite sculptures in the area, including a majority at Hope Cemetery. Enabled with a phone number and access code, we walked around the cemetery and located the tombs associated with the item number on the map. A voice told us the history of the people/family buried there and the story behind the original, heartwarming, and sometimes shocking headstones they had chosen. We were enthralled and spent way more time than we had initially planned there. I would highly recommend this for anyone of all ages. It was a memorable part of our entire trip. read more

Hope Cemetery can be viewed as a wonderful sculpture garden of headstones. The granite stonecutters from the quarry were given a block of granite to carve the headstones for their family. There are over 10,000 creative gray granite headstones that have been intricately carved with flowers, ships, angels, religious symbols. A MUST see if you enjoy wandering through cemeteries. read more
