I decided to share finally in case I'm not alone. In Mid 2019 I had a crisis and was rushed to St-Mary's in an ambulance. I'd been bleeding for almost a month and that morning I woke up with the worst pain of my life. I attempted to walk it off, but I collapse and was told that by the time the ambulance arrived there was blood everywhere. I was treated with respect and care in the ambulance. They calmed me down and off to the hospital we went. Once we arrived at St-Mary's, the first nurse I saw kept asking me if I had had an abortion. I told her no, and the fact that I wasn't sexually active yet. She kept insisting on it. At that point however, I couldn't talk much because I was writhing in pain. She took some blood and send me to the waiting area. Once girl from the ambulance came to me later with a blanket to cover myself and pads and told me to hang in there. About 3-4 hours later, I was sent to a consultation room and waited another 30-40 minutes to finally see a doctor. He came in looking at his chats or whatever, asked me if I was still in pain, I told him it was better than before. I tried to tell him my medical history, about the past 30 days. He just cut me off and told me that since I wasn't in pain anymore [they gave me pain killers] to just go home and come back if I am in pain again. Mind you I was still in pain. I told him as much. I also asked what was wrong with me. About the blood work. He walked to the door still checking his clipboard and said just come back if your are in pain again and left. I had no idea what to do. I came to this country on my own not too long ago. I don't really understand how hospitals work here. I had to go to a private clinic and pay over $700 to see a doctor for a diagnosis. I was ignored. My pain was doubted. There were no tests done to find out what was wrong. I was harassed by a nurse about an abortion even though I told her I hadn't had one. I see many people go to hospitals and come back with answers or At least guidance on their conditions. None of this was afforded me. Not even basic human decency. I didn't even get a face to face with the doctor! I remember the top of his head though. I'd be careful going to institutions that treat people this way.

I laboured and gave birth there 2 months ago and the staff in the birthing center were wonderful: gentle, reassuring, and knowledgeable. Of course staying several nights wasn't particularly pleasant for me, especially when sleep deprived, but I could tell the nurses enjoyed working in that unit. I was offered plenty of support and never felt ignored. My family doctors and experiences with Cardiology, ultrasounds, and blood lab have all been positive (as much as they can be). However, there are certain staff who I've found to be less attentive, have an attitude, and generally seem apathetic. If I were an older patient or one with reduced mobility/disabled, I may not want to have surgery there based on my observation of family members treated there in the past. Certain floors seem to lack staff and resources to adequately care for patients.

She goes back and had a couple of tests and sure enough...Dr. was right..she needs plenty of rest...because she HAS CANCER!!!!.. We went from....no nothing shows...it's Viral ..to Cancer...How is it possible to have not noticed this when we were there previously thinking it was pneumonia. I have no medical knowledge but when looking at an x-ray ...I am sure I would be able to see a mass in the middle and lower part of chest...We left there with the complete wrong diagnosis., to having Cancer. They were kind and thoughtful, bringing new measures to my wife to comfort and relieve her pain and politely asked us if apprentice nurses can assist us under their supervision. Of course, we happily agreed. Sadly, the epidural didn't work as it should have as the Anesthesiologist didn't place the cataract properly and my wife's pain didn't diminish and her legs were completely frozen for the next day. Needless to state, my wife didn't pass a happy couple of hours but I guess it happens. Thankfully, the labor didn't last very long. The doctor was very sweet and did a great job during the delivery process. My major gripe with this place happened after our daughter's birth when we were placed in the post-natal unit for a few days to take care of our daughter. Simply put, the service simply felt robotic, as did most things in this hospital with unionized workers doing their bare minimum to assist us. The steady steam of nurses that came in and out of our door at all hours barely even bothered to introduce themselves and did what they needed to do and then took off before answering any questions. When naively asked questions by new parents about specific subjects of parenthood, we received in return vague and hasty answers with a quick exit. Clicking a button to ask for assistance for something has a staff nurse answering in an annoyed voice, "Yeah, what do you want?" in French. This service was a sharp contrast compared to the services of the pre-natal unit by Marie-Christine and Laurence and left a lasting mark on us during the first two weeks of parenthood. At no point and time did someone sit with us for more than 5-10 minutes to discuss things, asking us specific questions about how to feed our daughter, what to expect while nursing our child and so forth. We got a pamphlet or two, with generic answers and were sent out to the wild. Thankfully, after a few days we referred to external services at our own cost who assisted us greatly. This type of attitude wasn't solely noticed here but as well as the staff in their casse-croute. They were lazy and looked annoyed at being asked to work. Ask them to make you a chicken burger and you see them sigh heavily. Ask them a few questions about something on the menu and they answer you in an annoyed voice. What the hell? Where am I? At a 5 star hotel by snobby Parisians? They must think they are with their expensive prices (for cafeteria food). Furthermore, the furniture was ancient. In the post-natal area, we booked a private room and were provided with a 13 inch CRT screen that we couldn't even use, since it was billable... really?????????????? 13 inches? CRT? What is going on? Is this why they didn't want us to take a tour of the facilities beforehand? The fold out sofa was extremely uncomfortable to sleep in and their pillows were tiny and useless. Make sure to bring your OWN! The hospital bed for my wife was tiny as well, she's 5'6 and her feet couldn't even stretch out all the way. Long story short.... the pre-natal section was amazing, 5 stars.. but the rest of the place STUNK! You've been warned.
