The service here was amazing. We came in on a Sunday night so it wasn't too crowded. We were seated right away. I ordered the buffalo chicken sliders and my boyfriend got the bacon meatballs. The sliders came with onion strings which I was excited about because I love onions. I also asked for extra buffalo sauce on the side. Only thing that I didn't like was the coleslaw that came on the sliders. I would've preferred it on the side because I'm not a fan of coleslaw. The meatballs were good according to my boyfriend. He mentioned that he just recently moved to Chicago and ended up telling us all the cool places and thing to do in the holidays that he found from a book. I gave this another shot last night and was super impressed. Last time, I sat at the bar during a busy Friday happy hour and just ordered wings and a beer. While the service and beer were good, the wings were disappointing. So last night, my boyfriend and I came for a full blown dinner, and left happy and full. I didn't try the wings again, but we did order the chicken and waffle bites and the pretzel sticks. GET THE CHICKEN AND WAFFLE BITES. They are fantastic. The pretzel sticks were excellent too, enhanced by three different dips! My favorite was the queso dip, it was really really good and I used it on my fries also. As for the entrees, I got the Southerner wrap, which had fried chicken and chipotle dressing, and it was delicious AND massive. I had it for lunch the next day. It came with fries which were so hot at first I couldn't eat them (always a good fresh sign) but perfectly crispy and delicious. My bf had the "O Burger" which I didn't try but he said it was really good. I heard from a little bird that this place had Not Your Father's Root Beer on draft, so of COURSE my BF and I had to stop here for some drinks and grub during our Chicago trip. We arrived a little after 6pm and were greeted by a very friendly bouncer whose name escapes me at this time. The place was very dimly lit when we entered and decorated for Halloween, which was awesome. Who doesn't love staring at a creepy skeleton while they eat (totally not being sarcastic)? Unfortunately, I didn't particularly care for the place we were seated since my stool was wobbly and I am extremely short so it was a bit difficult to get up onto the seat. However, that is something I experience at most bars/taverns. Our waitress, Brooke, was awesome. She was fast, attentive, and super friendly. The bar got pretty packed but she still swooped in and refilled my water as soon as my cup was empty. I would like to point out that they have a very impressive list of beers on draft. I am not a beer drinker, but I was impressed by the variety. We both ordered Not Your Father's Root Beer, which was about $8 a glass. It was super delicious and about twice the alcohol content. My BF ended up ordering a local beer as well, which was recommended by Brooke. Aside from the root beer, the best part about Hopsmith Tavern was the food. Hands down. And we ordered a ton of it. For our appetizer we ordered the nachos with chicken. We were definitely not expecting them to be as huge as they were! They probably could have fed three people and they were delicious. Super spicy, though! For our entrees, I ordered three tacos (it was taco Tuesday). I got the Nashville hot chicken taco, the fish taco, and the brisket taco, which was my favorite. My BF got the mushroom and Gruyere burger with truffle tater tots. I did not try the burger but the tots were to die for. #24 So where the heck does one go at 3-something-AM in the Chicago area if they want a drink, fun people, amazing music and maybe food? Yeah, Hopsmith Tavern, you guessed correctly. Now, the reason I know that they are open that late is not because I stumbled in drunk and sloppy that late in the evening, but because I stumbled in wanting to get drunk and sloppy around Happy Hour and they told us about the "open til 4AM" thing and invited us back. We will be back to check that out, do not fear sweet bartender. Cool to know, they like to allow you to taste the beers if you are not a beer person, like myself. I am Sooooo not a beer person, but Hopsmith Tavern's killer bartender helped me become one, even if it was just for the evening. I tried about three and finally decided on an unfiltered, citrus tasting beer. We had a few things to eat with our drinks: Hopnuts (you gotta try 'em) Sesame Chicken Salad Cobb Salad Fish Tacos Sliders (both chicken and pork) Hummus (which was really great) They have an upstairs area too, very crowded late in the evening--yes, we came back--but filled with people who want to have a good time, so we felt right at home. There was a DJ later that night causing many people to dance (even in spots that were not 'okay' with the staff) and it was a great time all around. Hopsmith reminds me of college in a good old nostalgic way. I've only been here at night (read: after 10:30 pm), so I had no idea this place even served food. But at the wee hours of the night it's so packed with people you can barely move, and everyone sings along to songs just like you're back at your favorite college bar. There's lots of beer, both in people's hands and on the floors, and the big wraparound bars both upstairs and downstairs make it pretty easy to get a drink. Come earlier on in the night, and you might even get a table. This isn't my favorite bar in the whole wide world, but it's a-okay for grabbing a few drinks with friends late at night. Made a reservation a week and half in advance just to be stuck outside in a tent that has 4 heaters. We specified indoor seating during reservation both over the phone and online. They were offering a $2 sliders special (minimum order of 3), which was perfect for someone who was having a hard time choosing my beer. We tried the pork belly, cheeseburger and the coney dog. The coney dog was actually my favorite, which feels weird to say given that its not really what I'd consider a "slider." Sliders were served with complimentary onion strings. Great value! We were seated and waited for almost 15 minutes while another table of Caucasians were seated after us and received service right away. If you pay with cash they do not make change. So if your total is $12.60 and you give them $13, don't expect $.40 back, because they round up. This is a new thing when I was there November of 2019 they gave me the correct change. They beer prices do not included tax, so if you have two $7 beers you total will be $15.68. It is annoying because here in Chicago most bars set the menu prices to include the tax, so the menu price is the total you pay. Other than that it is ok.
