Great little trail that we used the All Trails map which I highly suggest you have since the map is…read morelive even if there is no reception. You will easily get lost if you don't have it. So many trails run off from the main trail. No facilities so plan ahead and do your business beforehand. Parking: Got there at 7:30am on a Saturday. Only a few cars there. When we left at 11:00am, the parking lot was full with about 10 cars in there. Plus it's so hot. So start early on a mid September morning. Bugs: For sure bring a head net. I had one and my two friends were suffering. I'd say it was 80% if the time, the bugs were all on the trail. Our big spray seemed to attract then and not deter them. Saw a large tarantula near the one of two picnic tables. Clothes: Be sure to wear a hat. It is pretty hot with only a few trees for shade. Also wear long pants with tall socks to avoid ticks and dust. Water: Brought two 24oz water bottles and that was enough on a 80 degree morning. Food: We bought snacks like a breakfast burrito to enjoy at the picnic tables. The Trail: If you go counter clockwise, it's a slow accent. Challenging and dusty. On the way down, it's a bit slippery so I used my hiking poles. So glad I brought them!

You need a FREE campfire permit if you're staying there overnight available from the Hume Lake Ranger Station, but we just did a day hike. There is lots of climbing involved, you have to cross Poop Out Pass at 3.7 miles and I was dying to get to the lake cuz it felt like I had been hiking Forever. It's the highest point on the trip. The lake is at 9,000 ft and I could tell we were up high because of the headache I got. Took some aspirins then felt a bit better. The lake is nice, lots of small fishes that I couldn't see but they kept jumping out of the water I guess eating bugs. Had lunch there then turned back down the trail. I got to explore, fish, swim, relax, and wake up to an amazing view. This hike is hard especially with a 35-40lb backpack. Plenty of tent site if you got a permit.

It was the perfect distance for a nice day hike, at about 10 miles. Nice reward of picturesque lakes at the end, and you turn around head back. I went down to touch the water, but some people went swimming in the ice cold water! This was a very popular trail and seemed like everyone brought their dogs. Out of maybe 20 parties with dogs, 1 actually had it on a leash. I would recommend starting this hike early so you can grab a parking spot at the trailhead and avoid the heat.

First, I did not see any signs from the 180 leading to this point, but it's Panoramic Point Road,…read morethe opposite direction of Grant Tree Road that intersects 180 near Azalea Campground about 2 miles from the visitor center. If the road isn't closed, just drive up and keep going up until you get to the parking lot. The paved path is a paved, pine-tree shaded, steady uphill climb of 100 feet, a 1/2 mile roundtrip. If my dad had walked this path when he was a kid, it would have been uphill both ways. A sign reads "...high mountains and deep canyons, the rocks, the hills and valleys, the result of forces (tremendous earth upheavals, erosion, the movement of ponderous glaciers and raging rivers, the winds and changing temperatures) operating over millions of years." A display points out the Obelisk, Mount McGee, North Palisade, Eagle Peak, and Spanish Mountain (which Trump is trying to build a wall around). You can also see spires along Tombstone Ridge, bald patches caused by landslides (or wearing a hat, my dad says), and a cradled Hume Lake 2,300 feet below (12 miles away/33 min drive). The view of the Sierra Nevadas look just like the beer label. Panoramic Point is one of many sites on the north half of the park including Big Stump (which you passed to get here), General Grant Tree (the opposite side of 180), plus continuing up 180: Junction View (11 mi up), Hume Lake (12mi), the Scenic Byway and Boyden Cavern (20mi), Grizzly Falls (25mi), Roaring River Falls (32 mi), and Mist Falls near Road End (35mi).

You can choose to hike start from the trailhead at the end of Panoramic Point Road, 2 miles up from the park visitor center and market at Grant Village. We chose to drive up to the parking lot instead. It was about a 10 minute drive up on a narrow road from the John Muir Lodge. Gorgeous overlook and amazing views from the top. Highly recommended!

Essentially located right across the street from Giant Forest Museum. You can park at the…read moresurrounding museum parking lots to access Beetle Rock. Unfortunately, there was no sign indicating which rock was THE Beetle Rock, but my best guess is that it is the large curved rock that is right next to the abandoned-looking Beetle Rock Center. You can easily climb onto this rock from the portion that is almost even with the ground. The views from atop this rock are absolutely stunning. Given that this rock is so accessible and just a quick 5-minute walk from the parking lot, I highly recommend stopping by really quick if you're in the area anyway. Minus brownie points for not having a posted sign and information board on where/what exactly the Beetle Rock is.
