Why is it worth the drive ? Cuz it's simply beautiful and way less crowded than Yosemite. Depends on the time of the year we have this place all to ourselves. Even though 180 is winding, the views of the mountains and the Kings River from this part of the road is spectacular. Just a few more miles further from Zumwalt , you'll find the trailhead to the Mist Falls Trail ( not to be mistaken from Mist Trail in Yosemite).

The winding road took us there was quite beautiful, rock formation on the side of the road, the roaring rivers on the side are quite wonderful to look at. The park ranger at the gate was so helpful and pleasant, made our long trip less tiring but exciting. The cost to visit all the beautiful parks in California was so inexpensive and the parks are really well kept, the restrooms are quite clean. The roads are smooth. We were lazy to put gas from Mojave and we're still had some gas left on top of the falls, but there aren't any gas stations for 50 miles. Luckily, it was downhills on the way down, we had enough gas to get to the gas station. Make sure you have enough gas or electricity on EV if you go to the Grizzly Falls Picnic Area. Anyhow, it was worth it to drive all these miles and winding roads to see the beauties of California.

We stopped off to ask a Ranger at the museum in front of the Sentinel tree, for some options since we'd rented snow shoes and really wanted to find some trails instead of wander around following bear tracks in the snow (which is fun too, but I wanted to see some actual trails). This was one he suggested as it was literally right across the road. It was a very easy and enjoyable hike. We were completely alone, most of our time in the park while attempting to find trails which made the experience different than high trafficked trails in national parks during Spring, Summer and Fall. We had this place to ourselves and it was incredible and a tad bit odd at times. I wondered where everyone was. We were to Sunset Rock in no time. I'd like to say out and back in around an hour or less and that was trekking through tons of snow and stopping at the rock for a bit once there. Once to the rock, which had visible patches showing through we took in the views. This was a very serene and peaceful trail in February. It wasn't strenuous at all so I'd definitely recommend it for all athletic abilities and ages. Will be nice to see it again in the Summer, sans the snow.

I have done this hike dozens of times, but have never actually gone to watch the sunset. I have always hiked to Sunset Rock well after dark to lay out and look at the stars....which I highly recommend. Not only do you get an EPIC view of the night sky, but you also get a beautiful city view of twinkling lights. Bring a blanket to lay out and if the sky is dark enough, you will get a clear view of the Milky Way and I can guarantee you will see satellites and a few shooting stars! If you decide to hike this at night, make sure to bring a good flashlight and some friends....hiking this at night can be pretty scary since the trail goes into the forest and away from the road. You will be in the pitch black. It's pretty easy to see the trail, plus there are reflective trail markers on some of the trees as you go. The memories and fun stories that come from hiking this at night are priceless!!

Marble Falls , Sequoia National Park…read more First time I did this 5 years ago it was breathtaking gorgeous. Misty , foggy , a bit dark in lush green rainforest like tropical jungle. Second time was like that also. Third time today (04.10.22) not so rainforests - like due to burns. Really sad. Almost the entire place was affected by the fires. Looked completely different from last two times I did this hike. Nevertheless the water was raging at the falls. Some sketchy areas on the trail due to washouts. Sad to see graffiti on some boulders ( they weren't there 4,5 years ago). Tons of native species like Mariposa Lilies , Ithuriel's Spears, Pink Fairy Lanterns, a few blooming Yuccas , birds eyes gills, popcorn flowers, fiddlenecks, Madia , Chinese Houses , Tritelea, California Goldfields, Brodiaea, baby blue eyes etc. First time I did this 5 years ago and second time 4 years ago , my hiking buddies and I did not see a single other hiker but today tons , too many to count. It's too crowded now. Because of the burns and the crowd , 4 stars otherwise if this was 5 years ago definitely 10 stars.

Not a difficult hike, and pretty close to the main entrance of Sequoia National Park. You have to…read morego through the Potwisha campgrounds and park your car at a small parking lot. You start by following an aqueduct and then at a sign, you turn right and start going up. It is a moderate distance, 3.5 miles to get there. The views are breathtaking and you have a waterfall reward at the end. Which actually may vary if in the dry season. Alternative: If you don't want to hike that long and still want to see a nice amount of water, instead of going left on Powisha Campgrounds, go right and park at this little construction site. Follow a small trail, that will lead you to a bridge. Before you reach the bridge, will see to your left ancient paintings and if you keep an eye on the grounds around the bridge, you will see holes in the granite (mortars) that were made by local tribes to grind nuts. We were advised not to go too far past the bridge because it "gets snaky". We didn't see any rattlesnakes, but kept close to the bridge, which was gorgeous with a swimming hole and a little private beach.

However, Horse Creek was a good introduction to the camping world. At $20 a night, you get your own campsite that can fit up to 8-10 people. We were able to fit about 4 tents. The ground was flat enough to set up camp, and the grounds to eat and chill were spacious enough. As for the bathrooms, the showers are fairly clean and the toilets aren't too shabby either. It seemed like they were cleaned on a daily basis. As for entertainment, the campsite is right near the lake so every morning I woke up to the beautiful sight of nature - the sunset was pretty as well. The lake wasn't too dirty, although I would recommend water shoes. Also, the main office has friendly staff to answer any questions. Ultimately, if you want a campground that's at the bottom of the mountain (it's only 10-12 miles away from the entrance of the Sequoia National Park) that's clean and family-friendly, this place is extremely solid. I highly recommend it.

I enjoy car camping. Not quite the serious "hike into your spot" kind of camping. But drive up,…read moreunload, pitch a tent and relax. This campground was perfectly just that. The sites are RIGHT on the shore of the lake. In fact, the site we reserved was UNDER WATER when we arrived in early May. They're not joking when they say the whole campground is closed in the summer months due to flooding. Thankfully they only allow half the sites to be reserved and they moved us to an open spot, right at the front. It also gave us an easy spot to fish from the shore in the mornings and evenings. I'm glad we chose this campground when finding a weekend getaway. I heard it gets crowded inside the main campgrounds in Sequoia Park. Sites are well spaced out. Each spot had either a canopy or a tree for shade. Of course theres a fire pit too. The bathrooms were sufficient. 1 shower inside, with hot water. The local general store is within a 5 minute drive to get firewood and supplies and Kaweah Marina is close by too to rent a patio boat to enjoy the day on the lake. They will close the gate entrance at 9pm sharp. But you can park in the dirt lot or next to the gate over night. The exit is open all night, but its got those 1 way spike strips... exit only.

You cross across some rivers by stepping on big logs. And, there are nice views of waterfalls along the way, as well as the lake itself. It is a very fun and easy hike.

I think people are so consumed with summiting Mt. Whitney that they forget there's a beautiful lake…read morejust a short distance from the main trail. It's only 2.5 miles from the trailhead, but because of the high altitude it took us longer than we expected. The lake is at 10, 050 ft. and it is absolutely gorgeous! It was also very tranquil and had we not been pressed for time, we would've liked to sit on one of the tree trunks to just relax and enjoy the scenery more. The lake is also the only place you can hike to without a permit. Don't be stupid and think you can go beyond the lake without a permit! If you get caught by the wilderness police, i.e. Park Ranger, you'll be fined $5000 and a 6 month imprisonment!!

Visited the Tunnel Log in Sequoia National Park and it's definitely one of those unique, must-see…read morespots when you're in the area. The idea of driving through a fallen giant sequoia tree is pretty surreal and makes for a great photo opportunity. The area is easy to access, and the drive-through experience itself is quick but memorable. It's fascinating to see how massive these trees are up close--you really don't grasp their size until you're right there. That said, it can get crowded, especially during peak hours, so expect a bit of waiting if you want to drive through or take photos. Also, while it's cool, it's more of a short stop rather than something you spend a lot of time at. Overall, it's a fun and iconic attraction that's worth checking out at least once if you're visiting Sequoia. Just plan for a quick visit and bring your camera.
