You'll see Shell Mountain and the lake is at the base of it. You can try fishing, sit by the lake, or go swimming. Great Location & Warm Water, But Pack Light and Bring Bug Spray…read more Well, it's time for my family's annual camping trip! This year we wanted to check out Bass Lake, CA. There are several spots around the lake, but since we were booking through Recreation.gov, we landed on Spring Cove. I always try to book campsites close to the water, and on paper, this campground looked perfect. The Good Prime Lake Access: The location is super close to the water. You just have to cross the main road, walk down a little hill, and there you are! We selected sites nearest the road to ensure easy access to the lake, which is our main source of entertainment. The kids absolutely loved it. The water was warm enough to swim for hours, but cool enough to be refreshing in the summer heat. Bonus Perks: We loved that our parking permit came with a 15% discount for boat rentals at Miller's Landing Resort (just about a mile down the road). We used it to book a half-day boat rental, and it was easily one of the highlights of the trip! Awesome Camp Host: Shout out to Patrick for being incredibly cool and helpful. The Not-So-Good The Bathroom Situation: The flushing toilets were shut down, meaning we had to use porta-potties. Yuck! I am not a fan and found it pretty stressful. Thankfully, Miller's Landing was close enough to "take care of business" when needed. Yes, I'm weird, but I just can't with the porta-potties. Tiny Sites: The sites themselves are small. We are used to the larger, less crowded campgrounds up north at higher elevations, so we had to seriously adjust our layout for our party's three campsites and varying tent sizes. When the website says "small tent," they really mean small tent. Don't try bringing a mansion tent here unless you want to be moving picnic benches around just to make it fit. Mosquitoes: There were a lot of them. Be sure to pack plenty of bug repellent options. Despite the tight squeeze and the bathroom bummer, it was a great trip. I think we might have just found our new annual spot!

Fun lake experience which makes for a great "beach day" when you're camping in the local area…read more There are many coves and areas to park and setup camp next to the water. On the north side of the lake are three pay parking lots. All three are viable and you don't need a 4x4. We set up around lot 3 one day and had a great time. Secret place. There's a free small parking lot in front of the Lake Watersports Marina. However if you drive south less than a mile from this marina you'll see a nondescript gravel road. Drive down this road then take the first left road and you'll see a small parking lot. This lot is right above the secluded beaches. Parking here will put your car much closer to your perfect beach spot. Tips - There are a few marinas on thia lake but I would NOT recommend the Sierra Marina. Their equipment, specifically their Kayaks are old and broken down. Also, they're not located in a good Kayak spot. I'd much rather recommend Shaver Lake Watersports for Kayaking.

Kings Canyon was completely full, but Recreation.gov showed that Island Park Campground still had 2-3 sites available. We weren't familiar with the campground, but it was kind of on our way between Kings Canyon and Santa Cruz, CA -- our next destination. Sited on a lake, it looked good in the photographs, so we made a reservation for one of the available tent sites where we would stay in our Class B RV. Our GPS took us along a picturesque, but narrow and windy road, and we eventually came to beautiful views of the lake. (Route out, towards Fresno was easier). Our site was interesting. The paved parking space for our Class B RV was significantly sloped. However, there was a flat tent site, fire ring, and picnic table directly overlooking the beautiful lake. We peacefully sat at the table enjoying the afternoon sun, and watching a few kayakers. We later walked around the campground. There was a section with larger RVs, with families that seemed to know each other. Kids were swimming and freely running around. People were walking their dogs. Others were cooking dinner on their grills. Upon further inspection, we were surprised to discover that there were campsites and a port-a-potty that were under water! (A ranger later confirmed that there had been recent flooding). Being Memorial Day weekend, the campground was full, and became increasingly noisy as the evening elapsed. However, the strangest thing happened around 2 am. We were fast asleep in our small RV when we were both awoken to the crackling of a fire just outside our backdoor. It turned out that the tent campers in the site adjacent to us decided to start a large fire in their fire pit at that crazy hour and it was right next to where we were trying to sleep. Pros. Beautiful setting with views of the lake and hills. Water activities. Friendly and helpful rangers. Well-priced, especially with NPS discount for seniors with passes. Free showers. Pleasant temperatures in late May. Cons. Noisy and crowded on Memorial Day weekend. Many sites are too close together. Lake itself was flooded, with some campsites under water. Ladies bathroom near sinks was flooded, which attracted bugs.

My cousin even had a close call when he accidentally slid off the trail, ran down 100 feet, and narrowly missed hitting trees. (Slipper snow) Despite the challenges, the reward at the top was well worth it. It was a beautiful, secluded lake. Some of us tried a little fishing, while the girls jumped into the freezing cold water for a swim. The water was so "pristine" that my hair felt conditioned afterward. It was magnificent, the water felt untouched and almost holy! This past summer, we hiked it again for the 4th of July, and it was so much easier because I had lost 20 pounds, haha! I'd say the hike is about 13 minutes up, around 2 miles round trip, and great for all ages. Just make sure you're in decent shape and don't have any serious health concerns. When I was 20 pounds heavier, the hike felt like a 10/10 in difficulty. Now, it's more like a 3/10, a total breeze!
