My response to the owner: We were not greeted and spoken to kindly... Doesn't matter if you don't think you screamed. You raised your voice calling "No kids in here" You could have at least said "Hello" or maybe "Hello, how are you? Unfortunately we don't allow babies in baby carriers that can't walk or touch anything in our store either." If you were polite but just enforcing rules we wouldn't have had a problem. It was your tone, your facial expression and volume. The gal whom you were checking out saw us outside and said "That was rude" Referring to you... raising your voice. Your sign is not clear which is why there is confusion. No one under 18 years old would have been more clear. You can have whatever rules you want, make them clear. I've been coming here since I was in my teens. Teens are "kids" as well. So like I said on the way out, I won't be returning. I came in with my baby in a carrier, and upon entry I was screamed at "No kids in here" from the owner. I'm an adult who has been going here since I was 5 years old(back when children were allowed but I still obviously wasn't touching anything), I have loved watching this store change but do miss when had more hindi influence! Drove 20 minutes to shop here because it was recommended by a friend. I have never heard of a store not allowing children. Of course it's on your website when you click on the tiny little link that says '2021 store policies' but why would anyone think that there would be such a long list of rules for an ordinary store! I only looked after i was not allowed inside with my son. In regards to your mask policy, of course it's your choice, but please consider that most states in this wonderful country of ours do not have such a policy and even in Illinois, most stores are not enforcing it. Highly disappointed and angry! I've been a long time customer for multiple types of products In the store. I have been excited for the remodel and reopening and showed up with my money to spend and proper face covering even vaccinated at that! Horse Feathers a definite NO GO, at least not anymore.. I moved out of this area a few years ago and am back now. I used to go to Horse Feathers a lot back then. The owner and his wife were great people to deal with. And over the average years time I figure I spent about 2 grand a year there for many years. Well..... that doesn't seem to be the case with the new owner who I understand is their daughter or something. First off... the Covid scare is pretty much over with only doctors offices and such still requiring masks, but not at this store, still have to have them... but whatever, it's their store. When my 3 friends and I arrived we were going to go in but, one of my friends had her daughter with her and was told that she couldn't bring her in there due to the "Piercing" supplies that the store sold. The kid was 4 , and I'm quite sure wouldn't know what that was for even if you told her. We had all driven down there from Wisconsin specifically to go to this particular store, that we would not now go to due to the abundance of ridiculous "rules". To say the least, the store lost 4 well paying, cash carrying customers who trust me when I tell you, would have spent several hundreds of dollars there. To say the least, I know none of us will ever be back and will find a new place to spend our money. read more

I loved the store decades ago, was delighted a couple of years back and maybe the negative reviews aren't accurate. I think for me, if all I see is a reviewer posting negatives and no good reviews of any places- that speaks to them as a customer. I used to bring all my friends and family here and tell everyone all about this place. I will no longer be doing so. Today is the first time I hear about the "no children under 12" rule... we keep in touch with healers and spirit guides and what not and we needed to get a protection stone/crystal for my sister who's 7 yo. After explaining the situation to this owner she she just stood there saying "no children" over and over again. It's hard to grasp the concept that a crystal "spirituality" store does not care about things like that and won't make an exception. Love the ambience. Very cool place to visit and get some crystals. There service ticket system is a bit odd but the employees are very knowledgeable. If you are anti-mask/ refuse to wear one, you might wanna push those opinions aside. They monitor the case levels so depending on the day they may or may not make you wear a mask. This used to be one of my favorite places to go. Now they are so arrogant and have some of the strictest COVID rules i have ever heard of, and i work in the medical field. Totally stumped on the uneducated and bizarre behavior of the associates at this business. I was treated poorly. Kept getting asked can I help you repeatedly in a short amount of time by numerous associates (really creepy) and stared at. I had enquired about the names of the statues being from India and very familiar with Hinduism and the Islamic religion and received a rude response of "their buddhas". Could not understand the Hindu statues and tapestries but Muslim music, the singing of the words from the Quran???? Very disrespectful to both religions. In these types of sales of religious items it is believed you will have bad luck if crossed. Can not understand if business is so good why didn't they pay the gas bill.... it was super cold in the store obviously no heat. Inventory was over priced ($6000) "buddhas" and mostly piercings jewelry. Upon leaving the store I was followed out of the store and stared at while I crossed the street and entered my vehicle ????!Definitely not the cool store it used to be back in the day! Horsefeathers is such a great unique shop in downtown Waukegan Illinois. My family and I have shop there for many generations. They have the most unique items and the smell of the store is delightful. You can smell the incense when you're halfway down the block and know that you're getting close to a wonderful shopping experience. Family owned and operated for years it is a great part of the downtown area. I no longer live in Waukegan but when I do come back to visit I have to go shop at this store. You never know what you're going to find. It is jam-packed with goodies. And at times it's very full of customers so you do have to abide by the rules, as there are so many pocketable items. And during Covid you might have to wear a mask but at least they're trying to keep everyone safe. By keeping everyone safe they're keeping themselves safe and being able to keep the store running. I effing love this place! So so so so SOOOO much! I bought a crazy extravagant Indian pillow here for a pretty decent price. Horsefeathers is filled wall to wall, ceiling to floor with unique knick-knacks and chotchkies. Compared to other "hippie shops," they understand the importance of both retail breadth and volume. There are large arrays of items, ranging from eclectic sculptures and artwork to Jamaican inspired handbags. I love their vast assortment of jewelry, perfume, and incense. I'm pretty much slowly, but surely turning in to a hippy from this shop's influence alone. Granted, I've always been part of the 'problem'; never the 'solution'...SO YEAH A PSEUDO-HIPPY, IF YOU WILL.
