I came here on a hot summer day to enjoy the rows upon rows of bright yellow sunflowers amongst a beautiful blue sky. The fields may be small, but they are big enough for there to be plenty of flowers and to look yellow from overhead. I had a very relaxing time walking through the sunflower field, taking pictures, and enjoying nature. The farm is free to visit. Strawberries are sold by the pound, and sunflowers are a suggested donation of $1 per cut flower. There were also fresh-off-the-vine watermelons and cantaloupes for sale at $5 each when I visited. Photography is welcomed though a donation is strongly encouraged for each shoot. Overall, Berry Hill Upick Farm is a lovely little farm in Topeka, Kansas.

There are plenty of activities to entertain anyone, and rustic charm abounds. There are several areas staged for excellent photo opportunities, activities everywhere to help kids burn off some energy, concessions for the mid-day munchies or more (kettle corn, turkey legs, donuts, coffee, apple cider ((in slushy, shake, or hot)) bottled drinks). Most everything is easily accessible. The patch to the north is a bit far to walk, but there is a tractor ride that will take you there. The covered wagon has bench seating all the way around the inside, and there is a trailer behind the wagon to carry your selection of pumpkins and gourds back from the patch, with dividers to keep your goods organized and easy to grab when you get back. There is a large parking area with people directing traffic to keep it organized, which is great because this place has become quite popular. Admission price is reasonable, especially considering that most of the activities are included (barring the pumpkin shooters - $1 per shot or 6 for $5 - and the rock mining sluice, which has different priced bags available). Pumpkin prices are reasonable as well, especially with the selection available and the experience of finding that perfect one. Campfire sites are available to rent for group or family functions as well, pricing and availability for those can be found on the website.

Schaake's covers you for all of the above, just outside of Lawrence. Some other area pumpkin patches and farms offer pumpkin "picking" by simply setting up a ton of pumpkins for you to pick from a pile which is essentially the same as a grocery store. Schaake's is great because you can actually traipse through the fields, step over the vines and pluck your own pumpkins straight from the farm. In non-Covid times, they have a tractor ride to take you out and it'll pick you up so you don't have to haul them back. Covid times, they've added wheelbarrows up front so you can haul them easily. There are other little fun things here like a pumpkin slingshot, a chicken coop, concessions with cider & kettle corn, hay bale maze, cows, and an old school playground area. If you like the peaceful openness of rural Kansas, this farm will certainly deliver on that, even though it's very close to Lawrence. If it's one of those perfect weekends in October, know that it's going to be very busy, but it's always fun no matter how packed it gets. It is worth noting a couple of things: the admission price covers a great deal of the activities inside but not everything, so check the website for exclusions. Further, the food prices felt like we were inside an amusement park. For reference, a turkey leg cost $16, which nearly matched the cost of a turkey leg in Los Angeles' Disney California Adventure Park's price (~$16.50).

It's a medium smaller sized store with some produce and cider and cider donuts! The donuts are by the cash register in brown paper bags and sold by half dozen bags for just under $5 with tax. They are really good! I'm used to the ones in Louisburg south of Overland Park, but these are softer and more fluffy cake cider donuts covered in more cinnamon and sugar. They are worth the stop! I saw they have cider ice cream too, but didn't try it.

I have ordered from all grocery stories for delivery since the pandemic started, and Aldi has been my best experience. Aldi goes through instacart, and it has been very easy to use on my computer and the app. Once my order is placed and time slot for delivery chosen, I can add to, edit, and update my order until the shopping begins. I am able to choose specific substitutes and list notes for the shopper. The delivery fee is only $3.99, whereas the other stores charge $9.99. Both times my stuff was delivered, the way everything was packaged and placed by my door was flawless! I never was much of a fan of Aldi produce but lately what I have received is great quality. I would recommend Aldi delivery for local groceries right now if people are not comfortable going to stores, though the other grocery stores are now offering free pick-up (when some previously charged for this option).
