I always walk away with something to love. The clothes are lacking, although this last time I walked away with 2 jackets. Where this spot shines is the home goods - wooden duck decoys, brass candlesticks, baskets... if those old types of things are your jam, this is your spot. They also sell: old books, beach chairs, furniture, limited jewelry, coolers, kitchen items from silverware to coffee makers and everything in between. Overall, a Nantucket gem. PS: I turned my back at the register to try on some earrings and answer a question some ladies had about my dress and some tourist took a broach right out of my pile (it was very clear that it was taken). A 3 story home that has been converted into a charity retail shop, focusing on benefiting the local hospital. It is full of good, donated product, and has the widest selection of DIFFERENT things that I've seen in a thrift shop. The bottom floor is basically an unfinished basement, with rooms dedicated to certain items, especially furniture. One room was selling used books, and it has as many books as some small libraries. They had local product as well, and my wife picked up a hardly used scarf. The hallways are very tight, allowing only two people to pass when going sideways, and the staircases are one person-at-a-time. No chance for wheelchairs or strollers. Because it is so hard to move around, it was appreciated that each floor had their own cashier. I didn't see any long lines to checkout, and there were volunteers everyone, keeping things running. The prices do seem very knowledgable...you are not going to find any crazy bargains because the 'purchasing' department didn't understand the worth of some products. It is located in a very touristy area, so bargaining attempts by non-residents must happen once in a while. There was a funny sign stating that bargaining was insisted, the pricer would agree to give the discount but first increase the price by the same amount. This thrift store is consistently VERY busy so I'd recommend going for one of their late nights or on a week day. The staff is very kind and helpful. There's a great selection and don't skip the basement that's where the gems are. The pricing is good however the clothing at times can be pricy but it's always in good condition read more

We were visiting the island as part of a tour group and totally stumbled upon this thrift store. We don't know what the hours are but it was pretty crowded mid-day on a weekday when we stopped by. My wife found some nice items, including a pair of Nantucket red shorts that we literally saw for a whole lot more at the local clothing stores. My friend inquired about using the dressing room while shopping there today. After watching another customer in the dressing room get help from an employee, she asked the employee if she could use the room noticing her customer was done. The employee abruptly said 'no' and walked off. My friend thought it was odd and asked another employee that walked by and was told, 'I don't make the rules!' She spoke with management. The manager implied that the prior customer was not using a room and only trying on garments on top of her clothes. Then she said due to Covid rooms had been closed. Yet my friend told the manager none of the above was true and decided not to buy anything because there was no apology for how she was treated. We are African American consumers and racist treatment is unacceptable. We had a party of 14 today in Nantucket (which included our white friends). We all walked out and decided not to support your store. We plan to spread the word about your ignorance and lack of grace. read more

As with all thrift shops, the more often you shop, the odds of getting a "find." Yet your odds are vastly improved by an extraordinary staff making sure that stock is replenished constantly. I've checked out with great books, the kitchen tools I left at home, a cashmere dress, knitting needles, several vases, a Christmas presents, pieces of China, prints and the list goes on. The best part is if your guests have seen the "sights" and you need to pay bills, you can leave them for hours at the shop and hav a very nice latte around the corner. Very hit or miss, but when you hit, you hit it big. Clothing, housewares, china, and silver from Nantucket households. I've found handmade needlework, Gucci purse, Chanel jackets, and endless local Nantucket basics (cashmere, jeans, shorts, dresses, belts, etc.) If you're a vintage hound like me, you'll enjoy poring over the selection and with luck find some treasures knowing the money is all going to a good cause. read more

While you can find inexpensive used clothes, you can easily get ripped off here too. In their room of more expensive trinkets, they frequently price things WAY more than actual value. - I have seen things here priced up to 20 times more than actual value when I went home and did research. DO NOT BUY HERE WITHOUT DOING YOUR RESEARCH FIRST. You could easily spends hundreds on something that's worthless. Granted it's supposedly for a good cause, but then again the manager receives a big salary and the people who donate items receive a tax deduction... read more

Hospital Thrift is your basic picked over thrift shop on the island. You would think there'd be some high end options but it was slip picking. Men's sizers were large and the majority of the women's clothing was well worn... Better shopping for sweaters and warmer clothing. oHousewares were worth a look for rare collectible items. read more

Five to ten years ago, this was an amazing thrift shop. I found so many unique vintage dresses and skirts, even a great vintage bathing suit. But now it has been "discovered" by the masses, and it's really picked over. Nothing worth buying now, alas. The prices have gone up as well. read more

My family has been coming to the Hospital Thrift Shop since the 1930s - for 4 generations now. As summer 'Sconset residents, it was almost the first stop when we got on-island and still is. But that's only because I desperately want to capture SOME piece of Town that once existed...you know, the place that's virtually disappeared now with shops that have nothing to do with the island because the rents are so ridiculous no one can afford them except Ralph Lauren, rich spouses who can take a tax write-off by opening a pricey dress store, and endless T-shirt shops. Unfortunately, this year I felt that even the Thrift Shop had sold part of its soul to the Devil. When the "better" room downstairs opened some years ago, that was fine...it was one small room dedicated to some nicer items that were perhaps worth a slightly higher price. But now it's out of control. Hermes ties for $75 that sit there endlessly week after week along with sterling cufflinks that literally have a speck of 18K gold for $500!?? I stopped looking in that little case after the first 10 days this year as almost NOTHING was added and the prices were ludicrous. Jaliska and Simon Pearce glass at virtually retail? Victorian Silverplate priced as if it's sterling? Please. It's fine to look up what things are selling for, but do your homework about HOW to look them up. Those Hummels weren't sitting there taking up space on a shelf and unpurchased for no reason. Look up the REALIZED prices and then cut 'em in half. Or more. (Often even realized prices have been artificially inflated...you can't always count on them being real.) Bottom line is... you're the THRIFT SHOP -- not a high end gift boutique. No one's saying the money isn't going to a good cause, BUT you'll sell more stuff at reasonable "thrift shop" amounts than waiting for someone to wander in and pony up $100+ for a COPY of a Mary Starbuck poem. Sorry...I'm not finished: now we've got the upstairs "boutique" clothing room with shoes for $30-$35 and clothing in the higher double digits. STOP IT! (And to have to ask for the shoe match that's kept in the back room is insulting, too.) Some high-end designer clothing pieces were lovely and worth the $15, $20, even $25 price tags, but again, use common sense. It doesn't matter that an item sold originally for $150. A pill-y, used, no-name cashmere sweater for $35 is silly. Put $10 on it and it'll fly out the door. Then you'll have room for more stuff and make more money. This goes for the brand-new things from last seasons' failed shops in town, too. Price them to SELL, not sit there for weeks on end! You get this stuff for FREE -- and there's no shortage. Basic guideline -- if something is still sitting that at a high price after a week (maybe 2) lower it and move it on out. Going back downstairs, the Middle, Mens', and Linens' rooms, and the basement are still pretty fun...but oddly, sparsely populated and again, some things are simply too high-priced. Just because Nantucket Reds sell for their crazy prices at Murray's doesn't mean you should be charging commensurately crazy prices at what is supposed to be the THRIFT SHOP. The book room is a true waste of good selling space with lots of empty places on the shelves. So much great space taken up by a new photo album for sale for $8???!! It was great in days past when the book room was in what's now the new boutique room. Similarly, the way over-populated (and too-pricey) kids' room should either be cut in half or moved and that wonderful, large space used for something else. There have been some good changes...glad to see credit cards are accepted and the volunteers are all very nice, but it was rather sad to see one volunteer actually be AFRAID to let a customer use the bathroom upstairs. Really? She was going to get in trouble?? Please, Hospital Thrift Shop, stop becoming like everything else in Nantucket - only for the rich and leisure groups. It's always been a haven for so many and a place we could find a little bit of the old days. And on that note, a shout-out to the Seconds Shop down from Downyflake on Sparks Ave. which has such nice things at perfectly reasonable prices and which SORELY deserves a new, bigger space to accommodate its wares. And kudos to the wonderful consignment shop near Valero's. Yes, it's a business for her, but she hasn't changed her prices since the opened (a Nantucket sweatshirt for $3.50 vs. the Hospital Thrift Shop at $10 or $12) and everyone should be grateful she is there and isn't greedy. read more

When they have a half off sale (which they do starting on Columbus Day as they prepare to close for the season), then I think they're reasonable. Maybe because of their downtown location they have to charge more for used items. They do have a room featuring nicer china/crystal, but I would wait for their half-off sale before shopping there.
