To be clear: I have never ordered from Murray's, but I did order three authentic Indian patch madras shirts this spring from their associated store, Castaway Nantucket. I love the shirts, but they are extremely oversized. I ordered xl for the first two and one of them is in reality an xxxl, while the other one is in reality a xxl. So, for the third shirt, i ordered a large, and it fits perfectly--and I'm getting the first two taken up at my seamstress. The shirts are all gorgeous, with a very durable, hefty fabric, but quite expensive, like all of Castaway's products. I doubt that the inconsistency in sizing is uniform throughout Castaway clothing, but probably confined to their madras clothing, which is made in Chennai (formerly Madras), India, as I have found wild inconsistency in madras shirts from another retailer. I cannot say that for sure, however, as I have no other items from Castaway. Last note: each of my shirts are long-sleeved, and the fabric is so thick they are too hot to wear on a very hot day. read more

I bought a short sleeve Nantucket red polo shirt during the winter. When it was warm enough outside I wore it twice, laundering it in cold water after each wear. (I wash all my colored clothes in cold water) The shirt shrank (about a size) during the second wash. I told this to the store staff, but they weren't very helpful, not even giving me a discount to purchase a replacement. Surely they could afford some sort of a discount on an $85 polo shirt. I am giving one star because the shirt is not good enough to withstand a simple washing, and the staff wasn't willing to help. read more

I've been a loyal customer at Murray's for over 20 years, but after my recent experience, I won't be returning. When I brought back a defective pair of shoes just one day after purchase, I was met with immense rudeness and condescension. The saleswoman actually said, "I haven't had issues with shoes in 24 years," as if that somehow invalidated my concern. I was also told they could only do whatever the shoe rep allowed -- as if the store bore no responsibility for selling a faulty product. While I understand that quality issues can happen, I expect a reasonable & polite solution and most importantly, not to be made to feel like I am the problem. The staff were so incredibly impolite and inappropriate, I'll be sure my friends and family know to avoid the store in the future as well. We really like stopping in Murray's when we're on Nantucket. First of all, who can resist a clothing store that refers itself as a "toggery"? It reminds me of a UK friend who occasionally (and without kidding around) refers to her clothing as her "togs". Stepping into Murray's is kind of like returning to a more genteel era when there were loads of these kind of small, local department stores in which the shopping experience is completely manageable and has plenty of helpful sales assistance. Murray's deal is that it specializes in classic clothing of the East Coast preppy variety. It is also from whence the widely (and wildly) copied Nantucket Reds come from. "Nantucket Reds" refers to the very specific color that a canvas-like cotton fabric is dyed. It is most common to see the fabric turned into pants or shorts, which have become, for better or worse, the "de rigueur" clothing item to wear here on the island. Of course now you can find everything dyed this color including shirts, blazers and hats. The fabric is "100% cotton and guaranteed to fade." And as they fade and become more worn they look even better. And please, be able to distinguish between pink and Nantucket Red! ;-) I know, I know, it can all get to be ridiculous and it's true that some people just try way, way too hard sporting this look but I'll admit I do love the Nantucket red color. We did see a number of over the top Nantucket Red preppy types and took to calling them T.T.H. (Trying too hard). You must have a sense of humor about all this if in fact you are actually going to wear them. There are lots of of other classic clothing options to be found here for men, women and children. Don't bother stopping if you're looking to buy a piece of clothing which is an "up to the minute" off the runway hot fashion trend. This is the stuff that will stay in style (preppy style anyway) for the next 100 years. Think khaki, madras, blue blazers, button down shirts and striped boating sweaters. Things have always been pricey here but the quality has always been good. I am sad to report that the Nantucket Reds are now imported from China and no longer made in the US. I am therefore not sure about the quality anymore. They lose a star from me on that account. On this visit, the only thing I bought was a baseball hat. We shall see how that holds up. But it's still worth a stop in if you're strolling down pretty cobblestoned Main Street. read more

Murray's Toggery Shop was on my list of places to see before I got to Nantucket. Why? It's the home of the original Nantucket Reds™ and I'm a bit of a preppy. We stopped by the store on a Saturday afternoon. There were at least 6 employees in the store and we were the only customers. One of them managed to grumble a greeting. It's a lovely store with a nice selection of Smathers & Branson needlepoint merchandise, Sail to Sable dresses and tunics, Nantucket souvenirs and the Nantucket Reds. We found the Nantucket Reds to not be our style and were turned off by the icy reception so we did a quick walk through and headed back down Main St. One and done. read more

I was shocked by the poor customer service of this store. This is going to sound snobby but dear sales professionals, you are WORKING in a store in Nantucket, not shopping in it so please recognize that your very livelihood depends on people like me coming in and having a pleasant shopping experience. I don't ask for much, a pleasant smile, answering questions without condescension. I wandered about this store and none of the sales people even looked up to acknowledge me. I went to the shoe department, tried on a few pairs of shoes and bought nothing. The sales staff acted like they were doing me a favor by getting the shoes in my size. When I asked a question about fit, I was treated like a nuisance. My hubby was in the Vineyard Vines section and no one asked him if he needed help or offered any assistance. We left this store and went to Vineyard Vines by the ships (yes, I know it is owned by Murray's) and made our purchases there. For the record the hubby and I were very well dressed. We didn't look like vagrants who were going to waste the staff's time. Needless to say, we won't be coming back. read more

Murray's has always been considered a "go to" place for Nantucket Reds. Sadly, the 100% cotton men's polo shirts (imported from China) are lacking in quality. After a couple of washings, my polos have shrunk considerably making them unwearable. For $75 a shirt, I would hope for better results. My Ralph Lauren and Vineyard Vines polo shirts don't shrink - they're also 100% cotton. Murray's should not associate themselves with such a poor quality line. read more

The clothes there are beautiful but the people who work there are in no way friendly or helpful. I walked into the women's section where i said hello to two employees. It was obvious that I was interested in their clothing but neither employee ever spoke to me. Angry, I took the clothes I wanted to purchase to the men's side. I didn't want either of the women who ignored me to get credit. The men's side was no better. The employee with the pony tail ignored my husband as he shopped. i won't go in there again. There are lots of nice clothing stores in Nantucket who might actually appreciate our business. read more

Iconic, but staid. It's an older shop that feels it's age in a bad way--lots of circle racks that are stuffed with clothes, lots of odd cheap accessories. You can get the ACK Reds here, and this is the place to get them, but it's not somewhere I'd want to linger beyond that. It does the job it needs to do, but it's not a stylish or exciting/inspiring spot. With a little love and design, this icon could become a preppy staple, but it needs thoughtful buyers and some merchandising help. read more

Hm. Giving 3 stars because I came and found what I was looking for -- the every sought after "nantucket red" pants. I was in the store roughly ~15/20 minutes and not one sales person came over to help me. I was buying the pants as a gift and was going to ask questions about putting some ensembles together but felt as if I might be interrupting the staff had I asked them. I also kept checking my phone and the time to see how much time had elapsed HOPING someone would've come by but alas no one did. I purchased the pants. IT is a nice store, but the people working should be more friendly and welcoming because I was there looking to spend money and left with the bare minimum. on the bright side there are literally dozens of stores in walking distance! read more

When I walked in to Murrays yesterday, several things caught my attention. One, the interesting diversity of clothing. Two, the slightly standoffish feel of the folks working the front if the store and Three the absolutely WONDERFUL customer service I received from the lady working the shoe department and Eve, the lady with the measuring tape. Eve did an amazing job of asking me what I was looking for and taking me to it. I was looking for skull and crossbones stuff and she cheerily helped me. Unfortunately the collared shirt in the front was only offered in yellow. I require a way more ominous color in my skull and crossbones wear! I had a great experience at Murrays. I went in wanting to buy a pair of shoes, and had to wait because the sales lady thought talking to someone who wasn't shopping was more important than helping a customer. Yes yes, I know, the bastion of all things preppy . . . well perhaps, but their reliance on a single trick (the Nantucket Red fabric) has rendered Murray's almost in the category of tourist/kitsch. While the original Nantucket Red trousers are classics, not only have they been copied and improved upon by dozens of other companies, but the last pair I ordered was cheaply made (China or some such), the pockets were mistakenly sewn shut and attached to the pant, and had a bizarre fit pattern (too small waist, enormous seat and rise). When I complained to Murray's, they did nothing . . . no surprise. read more

Most unfriendly shop I've visited in years. I went here after the tourist season was over, so they weren't busy. The staff ignored me and just stared. I walked over and looked at some of the belts and the prices were nuts. The whole vibe was so bad that I walked out and over to the Nobby Clothing Shop which dates from 1930. The owner (third generation) was a really engaging, friendly guy who not only sold me a nice Nantucket belt (for a fraction of the price they were asking at Murray's) but gave me some useful suggestions on places to visit while on the island.
