I made the mistake of being on my phone and I apologized politely. That's on me for not noticing anything, and admittedly I wanted pictures since a friend of mine would've really appreciated the store and possibly want to join me another time. They're not responsible for my attention span issues so I get it. But after I accepted her answer and tried to be nice about it, she kept glaring at me and shittalked about me openly with a coworker (both were elderly women). Considering my appearance, I couldn't tell whether she was just upset about my phone (which is understandable) or lowkey racist... My gut feeling says both. I was on the verge of tears after I left. I love my town, always something happening*. The LBC has been on a bike kick lately installing custom bike racks in front of almost every shop within its border, all designed to reflect the business. Check out the "love" heart in front of Hot Stuff. Isn't that darling? Bike shops have "bike" racks, eye glass shops have eyeglass racks...you get the drift. I'd be down if some parts of this town were "bike or walk only". The Shelter Surf Shop now sports two custom "surfboard" bike racks, too! I've been coming here since the nose was still on The Sphinx in Egypt! Now that they are expanding I have an even greater appreciation for the store. Now truth be told I come here maybe 3-4 times a year because the gifts and novelties are for a specific genre if you will. Also, as open minded as mom an pops are I wouldn't give them a card from here. However, when it's time to attend those crazy birthday parties, special events etc. I have always found just the right gift. A little pricy? Yes but the term "you get what you pay for" does apply here and, I'm happy with what I get; calendars included! Hot Stuff is Expanding....... Hot Stuff just took over the storefront next door and has doubled space with new offerings to an already very eclectic mis-mash of merchandise -- the new hats and bico Austrialian jewerly are cool. You can tell the current layout is kind of a work in progress as they are adding more display cases and merchandise the past couple of times I've visited over the past couple of weeks. The selection of gifts, gags, adult novelties and gay accessories will amuse you (and the one receiving the item). It's sorta like Spencer's with a twisted rainbow. You'll be able to find something to meet your needs, but maybe not just the "exact right thing"....so talk to the owners and let them know your thoughts as they seem like good folks striving to meet the needs of a very demanding (and frequently fickle) community. To move my rating up a couple notches, please increase the topics and variety of your cards. Went to get a graduation card for nephew and couldn't find anything funny and really had a hard time getting a birthday card for a friend yesterday. Ended up with a boring "Ruby Red Slippers" clicking your heals three times...inside....but you won't be 29 again. Wrapping it up with major kudos to the owners for expanding in this economic environment. Went in to browse because I'm from Long Beach and had lived right down the street for over 20 years. Was rudely surprised to find a mean spirited woman working in there standing behind the counter not willing to help or answer any questions. Seemed very homophobic and condescending when I asked about some rainbow bracelets. So sad because I love Hot Stuff and actually went in there to see if a friend was working. Next time I'll make sure to see who's standing behind the counter before I go inside!!!! Very disappointed!!!! read more

Great place for fun gifts and cards

Ugh I LOVE this place! I always visit here before I go to eat at chen's Chinese food :) the employees are always so nice and theyre usually gay so its always welcoming! At least for me haha. They have beautiful stuff, accessories for incense, dream boxes, cute gypsy looking bags, delicious smelling candles, little random things... and then they have the adult side. The toys aren't ones I'd buy but I do love their cards and fun little things haha. its always fun to go in here. The merchandise is reasonably priced as well. read more
