This was a really great day, and apparently virtually unknown to people who live outside of France!…read more The trip is especially delightful if you go on a Tuesday or Thursday morning, as you will hit the street market in St. Jean (on Tuesday) or in Anduze (on Thursday), the latter of which is pretty massive. It's a fabulous ride through the French countryside, and the steam engine is a good show all in itself. Ride about half-way back in the train if you want the best pictures of the locomotive on the curves. (The train is so long in August, that the end is too far back!) The train was PACKED with French families, all of whom seemed to be having a wonderful day - especially when the train entered the tunnel and all the kids would holler. We had lunch at a Brasserie in St. Jean du Gard, which was just perfect for the two hour layover there. Just happened upon this attraction, and at 15 euros per adult (5 euros for kids, I think - 3 euros for your dog!) it's way more reasonable than a comparable excursion in the US. If you like steam train rides, this is a winner!

The crew was amazing, the food was amazing, the actual barge was amazing. No, I'm not running out of adjectives... that's just the best one to use. Eight of us chartered the barge for a week and let me tell you, the food and drink was plentiful... as in, it never stopped and you actually had to learn how use moderation. The daily excursions into medieval villages were interesting, educational and well-curated. There are bikes on board and when you are done pedaling, a jacuzzi (with champagne or gin-and-tonic) waits for you. There are a number of "hotel barge" operations in canals all over Europe and not many Yelp reviews so how do you know which ones are good? The canals are rather non-descript and remarkably devoid of avian life - we saw perhaps as many as a dozen water fowl and a few hawks along the banks. Sailing through the two harbors was a little more interesting, particularly the boatyards when several antiquated wooden boats were undergoing restoration. The cow herding exhibition was quite disappointing to anyone who has seen an American cowboy in action. I have seen 12-year old cowboys at local town rodeos who could outperform the French chevaliers.
