Two stars for the ultimate convenience hotel to the UA campus. That's where the perks unfortunately end. I will say it is the best option on campus. Maybe the only one though!!?? We stayed here for Bama Bound on 6-15-25 and again the next night. My wife suggested this place when we signed up for BB. I knew nothing of it except it was not new. I really only like new hotels these days. My concern was only justified upon arrival. I should have researched it beforehand but you live and continue to learn. It was built in 1987 and the last time it was remodeled was 2012. I just found that out right now and you are welcome! Here is an article excerpt on the remodel back in 2012: The 26-year-old hotel is undergoing a $1.65 million interior facelift designed to give it a fresh 21st-century look. That was 13 years ago and it shows in all areas and in every nook and cranny of this place. Old, tired, and slightly ewww.... That my best description. The rooms are decent sized. The bathrooms are like ones from the 80's, tiny. Here are few more lovelies we encountered. We didn't have any washcloths the first night. We only had decaf coffee in the room. The refrigerator was warm. The bathroom floors had pubes piled up in the corners. The carpets are stained. The bed creaked any time you moved. The thermostat with separate fan control was original to 1987 and it was either 90 or 55 degrees in the room. Every single light bulb in the room was a different Kelvin temperature. Our view outside from our window was of the unkept dumpster area. No free nasty breakfast either! No coffee area in the lobby to make up for the decaf bs. The front staff was tepid at best. Elevators are even sketchy. Will not stay again unless it's free. Then I need to weigh my options before making a final decision even then. We were in town for a funeral. We decided to stay here. But unfortunately, this place wasn't what I expected. It was old and dated. For $200 a night, I expected more. I was actually disappointed. When we got to the room the bathroom toliet wasn't clean! I didn't like that at all. The room had an old stale smell, but the bed was comfy for 2 nights. Unfortunately, I wouldn't stay here again. This hotel is a fantastic option on the campus if UA. The room was very clean and updated. The maid service was also top notch and the location is obviously a huge positive. I am traveling for work and the credit card I was given by my organization. was not working. The front desk employees were patient and helpful and walked me through the process until the problem was resolved. Then I discovered that I had a flat tire. A member of the maintenance team filled my tire up with air and directed me to the nearest tire shop. I'm so grateful for all of the help from these employees. read more

Excellent location, great service from the staff, ice cold air conditioning in the summer, super hot water and strong pressure in the shower, and a rather comfortable sleep. This is the place to stay for game day weekend or for any purpose or coming to campus in Tuscaloosa. Highly recommended. The only suggestions I'd have are to update the drapes to make them a little easier to 100% block out light, and to make a little more room where the toilet and sink meet, and to sure up the shower glass a bit so prevent leakage onto the bathroom floor. We had no issues with Capstone. Our room was quiet. A/C worked fine. Comfy beds and pillows. Location is a block from campus and old row fraternity houses. Church, Hillel, and synagogue are directly adjacent. Bryant Stadium probably a 10-15 minute walk from the hotel. The bathroom layout is a little tight as the door opens in wards and bangs into the toilet and shower, and the shower door also opens inward and you cannot adjust the water temperature without getting wet. We were told the pool doesn't open until May which was a bummer. No hot tub either. Small store in lobby carries some Bama gear and ice cream for your midnight cravings. Roll tide! read more

Stayed here while attending a wedding on a non-football weekend and had a nice time. Check in was quick and painless. The room was clean, although the location was not ideal. Some large fans or something were located near my room outside so I heard those from time to time. In addition, the walls were so thin I could hear what my neighbors were watching on TV. Beds were a little worn and the mattress was concave toward the center so I rolled into the valley as soon as I lay down on the bed. Shower was nice and strong although there was a little mildew around the edges. The shampoo and other amenities had a really strong fake lemon smell. It was okay at first but it was really, really strong so if you have sensitivity to fragrances, bring your own. Gym was very small but all equipment worked. TV got a lot of channels but these days I expect to be able to cast my tablet or watch Netflix through the TV. I couldn't even set up my jury rigged Chromecast because there were no accessible outlets near the TV. I will say there were plenty of plugs on the desk and nightstand. The building is only three floors but the elevators are agonizingly slow. Overall this was a decent place to stay. read more

Old dreary hotel! I had a hard time falling asleep the room and hotel were so drab and dirty. It is right across the street from the baseball stadium, so if you are here for a baseball game the location is good. The ceilings in hallways are low and had the appearance that the lights should start blinking like in a horror movie any minute! The gym is small if you care about that. 2 treadmills, 1bike, 1 elliptical and some medicine balls. It was clean though. On a positive note the female that checked us in was very nice and friendly! My Daughter had a tour of the university so I booked a room for 1 night. The room was Dirty, the walls had stains(see pics), and they woke up to a large roach on the ceiling.(see pics) She immediately packed and went to the front desk but the desk ckerk just handed her a business card to the manager and said she would talk to them about it. I called the front desk the same day and the manager would not pick up. The person answering the phone did not seem alarmed and said the manager will have to address it. This hotel is a mixed bag but still a solid option for visitors to UA. The location is terrific and the service quite friendly. The room was in dire need of a refresh but was still comfortable and quiet. A lot of chipped paint, a large hole in the bathroom wall, several stains of various types throughout. The floor was noticeably damp to the point that I had to wear shoes because socks would get wet and it wasn't until the 2nd day I was there that it dried completely. I think if the room was just renovated or maybe even just refitted, repainted, and touched up it would make a big difference but I understand Covid probably has forced hotels to cut costs and maybe put off repairs/renovations. I give this the benefit of the doubt so it would have gotten 4 starts if not for the wet floor. I'd stay here again if coming to UA in the future but not with much enthusiasm. read more

Wow! What a beautiful, beautiful hotel inside! First class! As you walk in, there's a beautiful bar and a restaurant. You can get food to go, and in the morning they put on a beautiful Buffet! Coffee was free! The hotel rooms are super super nice and clean and new looking! We were just passing through Alabama and so glad we picked this beautiful hotel! While at the front desk waiting to pay for a snack I saw and heard a lady ask for a refund of her prepaid to EXPEDIA money for the room that the front desk could not provide a key. Front desk clerk refused saying it was too late to cancel and that she must get her money back from EXPEDIA. SO MUCH ILL WILL WAS CREATED for Hotel Capstone, can revenue be that tight? My wife and I spent at Bama/Texas pre-game at this hotel/bar. Pre-game food and wait staff was exceptional. My wife had a mushroom and onion burger and I had a Turkey wrap along with two delicious Bloody Mary's. So pre-game service and drinks was five star. Could not wait to return after the game. In fact we got to the bar 5 minutes before the game ended, and it was basically dead (only two other people) and we sat at the bar ordering 2-3 drinks. Once the game was over and we had finished our drinks the extremely rude bartender suggested the three of us to give up our seats so when the crowds arrived they could order some drinks at the bar. I guess we were not drinking fast enough or enough drinks but we were buying drinks, and told to leave so others can have the seats so they can order drinks is just rude. No one else was in the bar! This hotel charges excessive rates for game day weekends and they can't afford friendlier or nicer bartenders is unfortunate. Because of the extremely rude and poorly trained bartender I give them a negative four stars. read more

I wish I could stay here each time I am in town. The conscience of being right on campus is so worth it. I felt lucky and privileged to have the opportunity to stay here since we moved in late and it was a Sunday-Tuesday stay. I even got the room discounted through a .com site. This is the first time in my 3 times here to stay in a room where I was dreading returning to the room for the night. The only reason I did give it 5 stars is because I thought the rooms would be a total houndstooth/crimson elephant overkill so I was a bit let down. The hallway noise was not silent and housekeeping came very early each morning. I do not know about room to room noise since we pretty much had the top floor to ourselves. The bathrooms were beautiful. The beds were so comfortable. The water pressure was great as well. read more

We stayed at this hotel because of the location on the campus of The University of Alabama. Overall, we were disappointed in the stay. For the price I expected a comfortable bed, however that is not the case. I was there with my two daughters and all of us complained about how uncomfortable it was to sleep on them. The pillows are flat. The rooms are large, with a flat screen TV. The water pressure to low to wash your hair. There is free WiFI throughout the hotel. There is a Restaurant (no complimentary breakfast, but free coffee in the lobby) and a bar on cite as well as meeting/banquet rooms, and a computer work area (with 2 computers) if you don't have your own, with a printer. They do provide transportation if you need a ride around campus. Staff is helpful and friendly. Would recommend if you want the location, but I will probably not stay here again with other good hotels near by for less money and better beds. read more

It's the box where they keep the bed. Nice enough, but little things add up to keep me from rating higher. To wit: 1) I get the impression that the front desk and the hotel restaurant is staff by people getting their degrees in hospitality management. Eager to please, but not always terribly sure what to do. 2) The AC. Again, nice comfortable bed. But just weird little things. For example, if you aren't running the air conditioner at arctic blast levels, the humidity gets so high, that condensation starts to form on every surface. Maybe it was our room. I don't know. 3) The room. We had two queen-sized beds. The one closest to the door literally had a six-inch gap between the side of the bed and the wall. I mean, you have to squeeze into the bed. Who designed this? Who thought it was okay? 4) The shower. A nice, spiffy shower stall with a glass door. Except, to turn on the shower, you have to actually walk into the shower rather than reach in and wait for the water to warm up. A trivial thing perhaps, but these things count. 5) The restaurant. I didn't eat a meal there. But walking in there and ordering two cups of coffee is an ordeal. Hand someone a twenty-dollar bill, and you'd think you'd just handed them Deutschmarks. They look at it as if to say, "What do I do with this" and then walk down to the front hall to get change. Then they come back and say, "They don't have change at the front desk." Sigh. 6) The bar. Next to the front entrance, acting as the entry to the restaurant. We were part of a wedding, so we already had our beers. The TV is playing the game. So we stroll in there, beers in hand, to catch the game. "I'm sorry sir. If you didn't buy your beer in here, you can't be in here." I know the guy was doing his job. But if you are a guest of the hotel, what does it matter? So I had to stand on the threshold of the bar, my forbidden beer in hand, craning my neck to watch the game. So the place was a little better than a Hampton Inn. But not all that from a guest experience. Putting Crimson Tide memorabilia everywhere doesn't make up for its shortcomings. read more

I've stayed at this hotel on several occasions and have attended numerous events here. It's a standard issue hotel that used to be a Sheraton back in the day. The facilities are decent, but nothing that will take your breath away. The rooms are tired, but clean. The staff is friendly and adequate. The banquet staff is very attentive and every event I've been to here has been executed well, but again, nothing that left me dizzy with pleasure. Bottom line: it's a neat and clean place that will meet your needs, but no blow you away. read more

This is an odd review to write. I stayed there recently with my family. It's a nice hotel, great location, friendly staff, but one big problem. You can't really control the air conditioning. Never, ever have I stayed in a hotel with such a problem. Arrived and the room was freezing. Pretty warm outside but the room was freezing. I turned up the thermostat immediately and two hours later, no change. I called the front desk: "Don't adjust the thermostat, it makes no difference. Turn the fan down from medium to low. That might help." (Yes, she actually said "that might help"!) Hours later it didn't help. Requested two extra blankets for sleeping. The next day I saw a housekeeping staff person. She said to turn the fan off. I did that and about 8 hours later it helped. It never got comfortable though since the room got stuffy. So for the next few days I had to turn on the fan for a while and then turn it off. Very odd. read more

We chose this hotel for our first visit to the University of Alabama because of its proximity to campus. I was extremely disappointed by the "renovations" mentioned in other reviews. Our room's bathroom door wouldn't fully open because it hit the too long toilet, the sink faucet was awkward to turn on because the mirror was installed too low and the shower was difficult to use because the trim hardware was cheap and kept falling off. I had to make my own bed for our pull out couch bed and ask for blankets from the front desk. The cleaning staff didn't bother to make the couch bed the next day. Coffee wasn't replenished, dirty coffee cups were left by house cleaning and little else was cleaned after our first night. I would never stay at this hotel again. Staff is friendly and there is coffee and orange juice in the lobby in the morning. I suggest going to Starbucks. read more

Beautiful hotel atmosphere. However... the manager, Thomas, is seriously the RUDEST person in the most unnecessary of ways. Older gentleman, asked us to keep it down. Totally understandable - was staying here with my mom visiting my brother, as he just started attending UA. We had 2 of his friends come over to hang out and just got to laughing really hard. So when we got a knock on the door, asking us to keep it down, my mom answered the door and absolutely apologized, then extended her arm to shake his hand. He looked her dead in the eye as he slipped his hand in his pocket and declined before walking away. This truly rubbed me the wrong way. So after a few minutes, I decided to walk down to the front desk and ask for him to please shake my hand and accept our apology. I opened the door and he was still standing there (truly, an awkward and really bizarre moment). I apologized right away, and asked if he was still here to knock again... and when I tell you this man's attitude was disturbingly unkind (I am talking raise-the-hair-on-your-neck uncomfortable) I'm not remotely exaggerating. Rudely, he replied to me with: "no? I'm just walking the halls cuz that's my job." I took a breath and maintained eye contact with him. I reached out my hand and asked, "then will you please shake my hand?" THIS MAN TURNED AROUND AND SAID, "No, I would uhh, rather not." He was absolutely vile for no reason at all. We weren't in any way upset that we were asked to keep it down, and not once did we argue him. It wasn't just rude of him. It was sincerely disgusting. The way he talked to my mom was already off-putting. By the time he talked to me and stalked off like a 5-year-old creep, I was truly upset with the entire way this was handled. Note to the staff: when your customers don't talk back and sincerely apologize, drop the macho attitude and be a polite human being. You're stirring up drama for no reason. read more

I usually stay at the Hampton Inn, but they were fully booked. I can see why there were rooms available here. Nice lobby, but it ends there. My room was in terrible need of updating. What was wrong with it? - No outlets for plugging in a cell phone or iron. I had to move the bed to get to an outlet to use the iron, the first of which didn't work and I had to wait an hour for housekeeping to bring a replacement. - Bathroom sink had a huge crack, looking like someone dropped a bowling ball in it. - Peeling wallpaper and cracked grout in the bathroom. - Huge stain on the carpet, which could have been red wine or the remnants of a homicide. - Television signal came and went, so you couldn't watch a show. - WiFi in the room was on and off constantly. All this for a discounted rate of $134 a night! $35 over the corporate rate I get at Hapton Inn for a much better equipped room. What it looks like is that this place has turned into a party hotel for UofA students. Unless you have no other choice, stay elsewhere. read more

Came in with a group for a conference. I booked three deluxe two queen rooms for the weekend. Front desk was very helpful in checking my group and I in. We were able to quickly transfer the credit card from mine to someone staying in the other two rooms. After settling into our room, we realized there was no microwave or fridge like we payed for. This wasn't a huge deal but when I let the front desk know they offered to reduce our rate or change the room. Rooms were nice. Bathrooms a bit small. Great location on campus. Food catered for the conference was pretty good. I'd definitely come back and stay at hotel capstone again. read more

Can't attest to the pricing/process of creating a reservation because that was covered by the university during my stay here. To be fair, I'm not terribly hard to please when it comes to hotels, but I was a fan of this place. Check in and check out was totally painless and the staff members were all pleasant. The free wifi worked fine the night I was there; it never cut out once. The bed was clean and comfortable. The flat screen TV w/ cable was perfectly adequate. The shower was clean and had great water pressure. Tons of clean towels....etc.. I don't need much else. Only deducting a star for a couple of minor gripes. It's a little loud and the walls are a little thin. No included conditioner in the bathrooms (only shampoo). And no free coffee in the lobby :( That especially bummed me out. Overall, I'd definitely stay here again. I'd just make plans to save enough time in the morning to get coffee outside the hotel or eat breakfast there. read more

Intriguing establishment. In a sense this is the epitome of Tuscaloosa hotels. Since the primary business of Tuscaloosa is the University, hotel business is 99.44% concentrated in home football game weekends, arrival of freshmen in the fall (parents complicating the transition,) and new student orientation (again parents!) This hotel is the epitome of that tradition. Outside of those occasions it seems to be almost empty except for folks visiting the university to give lectures or similar. Its primary value is convenience of access, which is important given the parking and roads congestion. The staff is very friendly and can-do. The decor is quite good. Beyond that it is readily apparent the facility is run by an academic organization. Heating and cooling is operated by seasonal policy. Get a heat wave or a cold snap and you will be uncomfortable, freezing or baking. The food service is great but the food itself is abysmal, mediocre at best. In fact the food in the student union is better. Stay away from this facility on fall weekends unless you want to be trampled by fanatics attending football games. read more

Stayed Sunday after parent's weekend, to be fair at probably a 4th or 5th of the price charged Saturday, which was also a game day. Got the corner room overlooking the pool. This is absolutely the nicest motel of the 8 we've experienced, the other 7 having been condemned as uninhabitable by every governmental agency in the world, except for the City of Tuscaloosa. Honest to goodness parents or alums who have made the trips to Walmart to buy sheets or towels in hopes of sanitizing the average Tuscaloosa motel experience, do yourself a favor and get that extra day in on the front or back of a long weekend and stay here without the nosebleed game weekend rates. It's a really good gig if you can get it. read more

Stayed here two nights. The second night, we received notice of a noise complaint because of an alleged loud TV. Our TV, which was not HD, was only on a medium setting. The front desk associate actually knocked on our door at 10:15 pm. My wife heard the knock and was asked by the front desk associate, "could we turn the volume down?" I followed up with a call to the front desk. The front desk associate was rude and threatened me by saying if they got another complaint, it would be a problem for me. Although, I'm paying to stay here like any other customer. Again, the TV volume was only on a medium setting. I asked to talk to the manager and was told he would be here in the morning. I have stayed in hundreds of hotels while on business and for leisure and have never had this issue come up. I moved from Tuscaloosa in the mid 1980's. I now reside in Texas. Is this an issue because we are African American or is it just plain, terrible customer service? Our first night was great but this second night has really ruined my impression of Hotel Capstone. I received an apology from a Hotel Capstone representative. The apology was much appreciated. I forgot to mention the front desk associate mention a 10:00 pm quiet time. I never heard of such a thing if it is your policy. The first night went so well and with the apology, I will more than likely stay here again. read more

The really only notable thing about this hotel is its location in the middle of campus. It is older but has had some cosmetic renovations to make it look newer, but the internet is horrible and very unreliable which is a must and the second must is sleep comfort and they fail there too. The beds are very uncomfortable and the pillows are too. They rarely have rooms available before 3 p.m., so don't count on an early check in. The breakfast is extremely low quality. Everything else is average at best. There are better options in Tuscaloosa, so unless, you need to be on-campus don't pay the price as it is not worth it. read more

Other than the location advantage to the university there would be no other reason to stay here. The rooms are old and dingy. Even though the lighting in the bathroom is extremely poor, you can still see the mold in the shower. You can hear the TV's in the adjoining rooms and anyone talking in the hallway. We had free breakfast coupons and ended up passing on the final days because the food is just that bad. The hotel lost our laundry(needed for a business meeting) for 2 days and didn't seem to care at all. I will not stay here again. read more

I recently stayed there for a few nights for meetings on the University of Alabama campus. The University paid for the stay and I was told that it is among the nicest hotels in town. The staff was friendly, check-in was smooth. The room was nice enough, but it was quite dated. You could see that attempts had been made at updating the room, but things like the air conditioner and bathroom showed the true age of the hotel. The elevators were slow. The room service was excellent - quick and the food was quite good. The location is obviously great and the campus is beautiful. Certainly wouldn't object to staying at Hotel Capstone again and it is one of my top two choices when I am staying in the area. read more

As an undergrad at UA, I came to Hotel Capstone several times during events I was a part of (I served as an Ambassador for the College of Arts and Sciences). I graduated in May of 2013, but I will be returning in August for law school. A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I were in town for a local wedding. I requested we stay at Hotel Capstone, since I had always been impressed by it the times I had been there. As far as the hotel side goes, everything was fine. However, we decided to sit at the bar area before the wedding to get a couple of drinks and an appetizer to tide us over. We ended up spending $40 to sit at a bar and be stuck in a terrible conversation with the bartender. I try not to let things like this bother me, but this was particularly awful. My husband and I didn't get to visit with each other at all, even after we both hinted that we wanted to be left alone. I'm typically a very social person, but our bartender was prying on social issues, and quite frankly, saying some very offensive things. I tried to change the subject several times, but he kept prying it. I stayed cordial, but my husband and I were both very upset that we paid $40 to feel awkward and have to bite our tongues for an hour, when we really just wanted to visit with each other. read more
