If you insist on staying in an "industrial chic" style hotel (lots of raw concrete) this is the place for you. Otherwise... don't bother with this place. Where do I begin? Most/all of the rooms surround an open air courtyard/atrium. Whether it's a late night talkative guest or a hotel staff member who starts cleaning and setting up the atrium in the early morning, noise echoes across the courtyard and into guest rooms like a guided missle (probably due to the the aforementioned abundance of concrete). The rooms are like dungeons... dark and damp... with very little natural light. The open air courtyard/atrium is also susceptible to flooding when there is heavy rain... which is what happened during our stay. The size, quality and quantity of room towels is very poor. THEFT OCCURRED AT THIS HOTEL BY HOUSEKEEPING. BE WARNED. I enjoyed my stay at the hotel. However, I left feeling super violated as I had numerous pieces of clothing stolen from my room after the housekeeping service. After my first night, the blacktop I slept in went missing. I didn't think much of this as black items are so easily lost in a closet of clothing. The second night chose a different black tank top to sleep in. The third night I did not notice the missing items as I slept in something else. On the 4th night when I looked for the black tank I slept in it was gone. As this was my last night and I thought it was super weird I was missing another top from my room I decided to pack up and fold everything to see if the top would come up. As I packed up my clothing I noticed my new workout set I bought for this trip was missing as well, in addition to the two black tops that never showed up. When I went to the front desk and brought this up to the manager and he told me this was serious he would look into the issue. I was checking out that day so the manager Raul told me to follow up via email on the status of my missing items. I assumed they would take a deeper look into what cleaners were in my room the days I stayed and ask them what happened. He responded with the message they have surveillance cameras in the hotel and they found nothing on the tapes however the theft occurred in my room and they stole garments that could easily be worn underneath clothing or taken out with the bags of laundry service. The whole experience was violating especially since I left tips every day for the housekeepers that stole from me with thank you notes for their cleaning service that day. The bigger issue is that management is not taking accountability and this WILL happen again to guests at the Hotel Carlota that have items that are of interest to the housekeepers. I want to leave this review as a warning since no actions or accountability have been taken with the staff. It is very important to have my experience be a lesson to prevent future travelers to avoid staying in a place where this may occur to them. read more

My fiancee and I had a fantastic stay here. We loved that the room was minimalist while not being cold. The robes and slippers were a nice touch. The heated pool and patio area were perfect because of the pool side drink/food ordering opportunity. The bed was amazing. The staff are kind and attentive for example they brought us towels while we were swimming having noticed we didn't bring any down. We received the pleasant surprise of breakfast being included with our stay. They had a great avocado toast that I ate multiple times. Had a nice display with sliced radishes and fresh ground pepper. Will be recommending to friends! read more

Review of The Restaurant: Organic Black Tea from India Flammekeuche with Onion and Botarga Octopus in Peanut Sauce 'Tostaditas' Bread and Butter Smoked Wagyu Beef Tartare from Drango and Seeds Tabule Macaroni, Organic Bacon and Oaxaca Chilis Creamy Polenta, Huitlacoche, Baby Corn and Mushrooms Soft Shelled Crab Rice, Crab 'Brains,' Shrimp and Vegetables Double Espresso on Ice Sheep Cheese, Strawberry Jam and Caramelized Almonds Lime Sorbet, Coconut Dulce de Leche, Mandarin Recently reinvented as a boutique hotel intended to woo tourists, it's design clearly the work of a consulting firm as an impractically narrow acrylic pool is flanked by interior design details invoking an urban-chic feel encompassing everything from ornate reading nooks to high-contrast artistic flourishes, Cuauhtemoc's Hotel Carlota went one step further in its rebranding by hiring Pujol-alumni Joaquin Cardoso and Sofia Cortina to head up its restaurant, the kitchen plainly visible from the street below with an upstairs dining space freely flowing from indoors to al fresco overlooking the pool and patio. Selected for one last meal in Mexico City as a result of location and expectations based on the Chef's pedigree, an impressive resume including not only the time with Enrique Olevra but also stints alongside names like Jean Francois Piege and Inaki Aizpitarte in France, it was just past 7:00pm that two diners approached the dimly-lit restaurant with limited signage, a hostess checking the reservation book before leading guests past a kitchen that still seemed to be cleaning up from prior service, an odd thing to see given the time...as too was the seating area that stood completely empty. Acknowledging that the restaurant is indeed a little new, though certainly not so much that one would anticipate a Saturday night during prime-time to be silent in a place with at least one-hundred seats, it was with light music playing above plus a family splashing in the pool below that bottled water as well as Iced Tea was poured as a lengthy menu was perused, both it and the service available in Spanish or in English, the plates ranging from those seen throughout Mexico's Fine-Dining environs to ideas seemingly meant to entice hotel guests with palates that are more difficult to please. Unfortunately un-wowed by the description of any single plate, everything assuredly made from good ingredients but undersold by the menu and a service staff that seemed appropriately bored and unwilling to get fired up for just one table, it was with a request for items to be rolled out slowly that a total of six savories plus two desserts were requested, an opening volley of Flammekeuche replacing the traditional Bacon with shaved Botarga and Onions atop Crème Fraiche and Micro-greens, the flavor not far off from the Alsatian classic and without a doubt the evening's best plate. Eventually seeing four more diners arrive just past 7:30pm, the two couples apparently part of a larger group that had decided to go elsewhere clearly frustrated with the Restaurant's refusal to serve them a pre-designated menu despite the fact that the kitchen was clearly not busy, it was after a lengthy delay that Chef Cardoso's take on Octopus Tostadas arrived with Peanut Sauce and big globs of Avocado Mousse, the idea seemingly borrowed from a Thai cookbook while both the Wagyu Tartare overwhelmed with Grains and the flavorless Bread served next to it made one wonder just what sort of client the restaurant is hoping to entertain. At this point feeling a bit of regret for not going elsewhere, still just two tables filled as the clock ticked past 8:30pm, the poor showing continued by way of a large bowl of Macaroni topped in briny Bacon that unfortunately found itself lost in a combination of cooked Chilis and raw Red Onions, the smooth Polenta made fragrant by Huitlacoche offering a brief glimpse of what the kitchen can do when they are at their best, the crunchy ears of Corn adding a nice contrast though the plate probably could have done without the Mushrooms. Finishing strong with a sharable bowl of Fried Rice, the fried bits of meat juxtaposing tender Grains prepared by cooking them down with Shell-stock and the Crustacean's entrails beneath snappy Beans and two grilled Prawns, desserts at Hotel Carlota seem fairly simple for a place touting the talents of a Chef trained by Olevra and Pierre Herme, two Fruit Tarts and a Passion Fruit Vacherin passed over in favor of the funky Cheese Plate topped in candied Nuts and Strawberry Jam plus a sweet Pudding that was later revealed to be Vegan topped in Lime Sorbet. read more

Don't do it. Stay away! Online photos can be deceiving. I've worked in the hospitality industry for over 25 years. I've owned my own business and having said that I'm very forgiving and understanding of the challenges involved... and trust me I hate spending my free time writing bad reviews of establishments. My first day I went to eat breakfast. I made eye contact several times and after 20 mins I finally waived and a server brought me a check- someone else's. No big deal. I said I needed a menu to order and she left. Someone returned with a clipboard listing all of the guests names and room numbers in the hotel to make sure I was staying there. Massive privacy breach! I pointed to my room number and was questioned about the name, which was my wife's. I inquired as to if I could charge the meal to our room and was told yes with a nod. Several minutes later a different server gave me a menu. I ordered (in Spanish) a breakfast sando & a glass of orange juice with vodka & ice. She looked at me as if I was an ET who just got beamed down from space and walked away with no explanation except she need to ask someone else who worked there. Several mins go by. I get a glass of OJ (only) delivered. I ask about the drink and she claims that they cannot accommodate this request. I ask (in Spanish) if this is because they do not carry vodka at the bar or if it is due to the time of the day. She walks away. Nothing else. Here we are, 45 mins + and a food runner finally delivers my plate. Decent sando (yawn), yet my arugula salad was sabotaged by what tasted like 2 oz of salt poured onto it. Inedible. No water service offered, or condiments. I ate. I was watching similar discourse for 4 other tables. I was 1 of 9 ppl in the restaurant at the time. I finished. I waited. Still no check-in regarding my experience and at the very least no bill was presented. So, I left, walked down to the bar, and pointed to the Stoli bottle. I asked for an OJ, vodka and ice cocktail and again asked if I could charge it to our room. Yes was the answer. I then went back up to the room for a jet-lagged nap, placing the DND sign on the outer door handle. About an hour into my sleep: KNOCK KNOCK. KNOCK KNOCK. KNOCK KNOCK. KNOCK KNOCK. KNOCK KNOCK. I answered the door and it was one of the servers demanding I pay my bill. I mentioned we were there for a week (readily available information!) and would settle up at checkout. Nope. Had to pay right then and there. That was a first for me. Unheard of- until now. Day 2: I went elsewhere for breakfast. Day 3: I tried again, and sat for 15 mins totally being ignored. I left to eat elsewhere. At this point I was flagged for sure, but at this hotel it meant make their stay worse and don't try and fix it. Wow. Fast forward to us trying to check out to catch our flight and the front desk clerks are telling us that someone has pooped in our bed and that we have to pay $60 USD extra for them to buy new sheets. I had taken a wash cloth the night before to wipe off some mud from my shoes, rinsed it & left it in our room with our daily tip for the housekeepers. I'm shocked we didn't get charged for shampoo and TP! At one point I looked behind our bed and found 6 pairs of ear plugs, and 2 disposed Trojan condom wrappers- along with years of no one cleaning back there. There was also a rigged electrical plug which miraculously didn't start a fire- or has yet to. Total failure, super insulting to my wife, we did nothing to deserve it and no one did anything to fix it. Just attempts to scam some folks from SF. read more

This hotel is so cool and a relaxing oasis from the bustling Mexico City. Inside this stunning building you'll find a beautifully designed public space, including pool, bar, shop and restaurant, while rooms are located on the upper floors. I have to mention the architecture once again, because it really is quite genius. The the architectural style is very minimalistic, it still provides a very cozy, intimate feeling. The rooms are large and spacious - and they are extremely cozy as well. The rooms stocks a comfortable bed, a very large flatscreen tv, cool lighting, books and magazines plus bathroom amenities by L'Occitane. Do I really need to say more? The rooms are stunning. Period. The public spaces are equally amazing. The industrial design is present here as well - but still with a cozy feeling to it. The hotel shop Taxonomia is true to its roots offering Mexican designed clothing, homeware and mezcal. The bar serves you truly amazing cocktails that rivals the best ones, while the restaurant is certainly one of the main selling points of the hotel. Wow, such attention to detail. I did not have their daily menu which seems to be more gourmet-focused, yet I still enjoyed my food very much. From their waguy beef burger to their chilaquiles rojos con pavo in the morning. Surely some of the best food I had in Mexico City, although I only had amazing food. My only negative thing about this hotel was the bath. I loved the spaciousness of it, however the water wasn't warm. Not ice cold, yet it wasn't enjoyable at all. Nonetheless I did enjoy my stay. This is a fantastic urban oasis in the midst of the sprawling capital. Without doubt one of the places I will return to when I visit Distrito Federal again. read more

DO NOT STAY HERE. I booked 4 nights at Hotel Carlota, the first two nights were fine (despite the wifi not working) until the hot water stopped running for 48 hours. Yes, the hotel had NO hot water for two days. To make matters worse, our hotel room door also broke which prevented us from entering our room for 3 hours before it was finally fixed. This caused a significant disruption as we had trips planned out side of Mexico City and other appointments that had to be cancelled. I also found long strands of hair that clearly did not belong to me, in my bed. Management made no effort to make things right. I really wanted to love this place but left very disappointed. read more

Great location! The rooms are very modern, they need to update/fix the shower head and water Pressure. The hotel isn't open 24/7. We arrived early Thursday morning had to wait for the checkin staff to arrive and was charged $40 extra to check in early. I was a guest of the hotel & ate here many times. The highlight was a dinner - for the price, similar to hip places in Condesa/Roma, it was way way way better. AMAZINGLY good. Refined but intense, think fine dining with a Mexican bent. Breakfast was also good - a lot of interesting dishes with local ingredients, plus homemade Kombucha and green juice. Good coffee too. During the week it was a little quiet, which is surprising considering how good it is. My guess is this place will be a major hotspot once people catch on, so get in quick. read more

This place has very much the feeling of a charming boutique hotel. The entrance area is an open spot with a modern free standing glass pool. Right next to it is a great coffee bar, a delicious restaurant and a cute shop, all together on two open floors. - Hotel Carlota reminds me of a nicer version of the ACE hotel. Their design and vibe has a similar kind of feel, although Carlota's room are much cozier and there are no hipster crowds working in the restaurant. - The only down point for me was their freight elevator. I think it's super cool and beautiful to have one, but please make sure to always have an operator next to it. When I stayed there I had to do it myself half of the time and there is a reason why in other countries you wouldn't even be allowed to do it yourself - nobody wants to break their finger on a holiday. read more

The architecture/design of this hotel is very cool, but it's not a comfortable place to stay. I know for a fact that you can get a similarly cool design, with more comfortable rooms, at a similar price, in a nearby neighborhood. Bottom line: eat here (restaurant is very good), drink here (ditto), shop here (cool store in the lobby) but don't stay here, there are better options. Why? It's loud. The hotel is built around a center courtyard, so rooms are exposed on both the street side and the interior/courtyard side, which houses the restaurant, bar and pool. The floors are concrete - sound reverberates. Bring earplugs. The rooms look cool but aren't comfortable places to hang out. It looks like they ran out of money so did the best they could with basic materials -- and superficially speaking they did a great job. The bed was comfortable, but only had two pillows. The industrial fixtures in the bathroom go with the industrial-design theme of the place but were difficult to use, and the shower curtain (really just one of those thick liner) had black spots (mold?) on it. There was a small closet with a few non-removable hangers, and the do-not-disturb door thingie was more a work of art than a useful signal - i had it on the wrong side (who could tell?) and couldn't figure out why people were knocking on my door at 7 am. Oh - and the retro-industrial elevator is DIY and a two-handed operation. Which I guess is fine....unless you're carrying two iced coffees. There were, however, very well placed outlets (both USB and electrical), and once I managed to crank on the shower, the water pressure was great (but the L'Occitane amenities seemed off-brand). They had a clever solution for the fact that the windows don't open (hard to explain here, but trust me). They provided two bottles of water every day, and had a small mini bar with soda, etc as well as odd snacks - things made of seeds. If you're into seeds, great, but if you want, say, a snickers bar, you're outta luck. But let's hear it for Mexican Coca Cola! There is no index of services or booklet in the room that would tell you things you might want to know - like when the coffee bar opens (7 a.m.), the fact that there's room service (no menu in the room) and maps of the area available at the front desk. That said, every employee I encountered was nice and helpful. But i still wouldn't stay here again. read more
