This hotel is awesome! It's the only 5 star hotel in Rouen and it has lots of history and charm. We had a hard time accessing it by car as our Navi took us to a certain point and then only the valet/bellboy can lower the metal post to let the car in. He was not there when we arrived and signage was not clear. We ended up driving around for 15minutes and our Navi kept bringing us back to this spot. Luckily, the valet was there the next time we arrived and he let us in. We had him valet our car at 25 euros per night and we did not use the car in Rouen as everything is walking distance from the hotel. The entrance and courtyard are so beautiful and a historic site...tourists are constantly stopping to take pictures. The front desk is large with helpful staff and a guestbook to sign. There are jars of caramels and candy to have a sweet treat and a carafe of flavoured water and glasses to have a drink. They also have umbrellas that they offer you when you go out if it's raining. The lobby bar is up a few steps and has a glass floor that looks over the pool area. I could not see the pool due to sun reflection but I could see the lobby through the floor when I was down at the pool. We were given an accessible room due to being given a late check out. Other than the shower being open and contributing to a wet washroom floor, the room was awesome. Huge ceilings, large space, and comfy. This hotel follows better "green" practices than others. Glass water bottles and glasses and porcelain cups. But they did change towels twice per day if needed (being an accessible room our towels got very wet keeping the washroom floor dry so we needed this done). They left little tins of caramels, 2 sunglasses and a reusable bag when we arrived. Then they left little treats each night. One morning we slept in and cleaning staff tried to get in the room twice to clean. There was no "do not disturb" sign we could put out. The restaurant in the hotel was great. They accommodated my dietary restrictions and made a great meal for me. All the major sites are within walking distance, as are several eateries and shops. It is a 20 minute walk down to the water where the Armada festival was happening.

Interesting iron railing motif from the hotel Entrance

The rooms are dated but public spaces, spa, fitness center, have all clearly seen a renovation.

It is a few blocks from the train station, just yards from the Joan of Arc Tower, and a 10-minute walk to the city center. Upon checking in, we met Gregory, perhaps the friendliest and most helpful front desk clerk I have ever encountered. He even offered us discounts at a restaurant and a nearby parking garage. The latter was most appreciated, cutting our overnight parking rate from 20 Euros to 7 Euros. Thanks, Gregory! Given the low room rates, we expected the hotel to have dated furnishings. That was true, but it is also quite shabby. The three of us stayed in two rooms: Room # 2 and Room # 6, the latter being the hotel's twin bed room. While our traveling companion had no complaints about Room # 2, I had a big problem with Room # 6. Just approaching the room, I could already smell mold. The bottom edge of the shower stall and shower curtain were covered in black mold. That really bothered me and left me with an uneasy feeling about staying there. Less important than the mold, but also worth mentioning, is the layout of Room # 6. It's actually quite huge, but the space is poorly used. A big, empty armoire dominates the most usable wall. Meanwhile, the small desk is cluttered and jammed close to the bed; and there is no place to sit comfortably. They would do well to remove the armoire and replace it with a nice desk and chair. Guests would get more use from that setup. Of course, ridding the bathroom of mold should be their first priority! The Hotel Morand has its good points: location, price, very friendly staff, and discounts at a nearby parking garage. But overall it's shabby, and Room # 6 should be avoided due to mold issues.

Cozy decor with old pictures of Rouen 100 years ago, and a fireplace inside. I think that most rooms are rather small but they are all nice (except the one on the ground floor, to be avoided because their kitchen fridge is on the other side of the wall, so the noise is ridiculous). The continental breakfast has suffered from the subpar bakery across the street which supplies them. The bread used to be nice but now it's very mediocre. The tea, freshly squeezed OJ and the farmer yogurt are still excellent, though. They also do a brisk lunch service (most savory dishes are just OK, but the Normand chicken is nice), and they have great home-made desserts which they serve all afternoon long, with tea or coffee. Service is a little rough around the edges but still bearable. I have only one issue with them: they play the same Diana Kroll CD non-stop, from morning to evening, every day. I don't know how the staff cannot go nuts. As a hotel and tea room, I give them 4 stars (too bad their Wifi only works on ground floor, and they have very few TV channels); as a restaurant, I give them 3 stars (it's still a good option for a lunch in town, particularly on a Monday, when most places are closed).

Inside, the room is artfuly curated with what seems to be flea market finds: aged furniture, black and white photographs of a distant past and vintage posters on the walls, an old piano, warm up the space. So do Diana Krall and the like whose songs are played on heavy rotation in the background. Despite the occasionally patchy service (the owner is a bit stiff), it's still an excellent place to have lunch (their savory tarts are good), or relax in the afternoon, cosying up in one of the coveted armchairs, while drinking a cup of tea and eating a piece of cake.

If are lucky to score a street side spot...no problem. Otherwise, you'll have to utilize a number of Pay parling lots. Keep your parking ticket with you and the hotel will validate it for a slight discount. The hotel itself is a refurbished series of residences surrounding pleasant courtyard. The weather being what it is frequently in Normandie (rain), I did not get to spend much time there. The rooms are basic. Traveling with my father, we had a room wit two twin beds. Clean, neat room and bath. Breakfast is served (for a charge) in a wonderful room off the courtyard. Huge spread of cheeses, meats, breads and croissants, teas, jellies and of course, some wonderful big cups for their great coffee. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. There are a number of notable properties in Rouen. The best depends on your needs for location, the number in your party. Plenty of sights here in Rouen too, so you'll spend much of your time out and about. Yet, it is always nice after a day out, shrugging the rain, to come home to a pleasant place to warm up and enjoy. This place does that just fine.
