I enjoyed this hotel during my first stay in Amsterdam. The service was excellent. Upon my arrival, I had an unexpected situation that turned into an emergency and the gentleman at the front desk was kind enough to let me use their phone to make a couple of calls. I have immense gratitude for that!! Because of that I was able to relax my mind and enjoy the remainder of my stay. The decor and overall aesthetic is amazing. It's located PERFECTLY between the canals, eateries, shops, etc. It's really an awesome central location for walking distance to practically anywhere in the area. I like to get out and explore on foot as much (or as less) as possible, and this hotel easily provided that luxury. My room was nice. I liked the sunken-in structure. I did not like the small television with static on every channel. There was no option to switch the language to english, but I'm not too bothered by that - I understand. Especially it being more 'boutique' than a chain hotel. The heat, while it worked, it took a very long time to get warmth in the room. There was no wall setting, only an actual radiator, which housekeeping had to show me how to properly and safely turn it on/off. I got the hang of it quickly. The bed was comfortable, not too fond of the bathroom, but I think that's more of a Europe thing. Eh. I would probably stay here again, but not in the same room. Amazing location!!! read more

Overall, I'd say this is a 3.5/5 star hotel. The location is incredible! Literally right outside Dam Square. Super central and within walking distance of everything in the city center. If that's the main thing you care about, then this hotel will be fine. My main gripe with this hotel was how dated, small, and dark the rooms were. The lobby is pretty nice and has a restaurant and bar, but the rooms themselves could use a new set of furniture and some additional lighting. I stayed here a week and found that my room was almost always too dark. But again, if location is your first priority then this is a fine choice. read more

I let the old lady book this one. She narrowed the selection down to about 3 hotels and selected this one based on location. The location couldn't be any better. We could basically walk anywhere in Central Amsterdam in under 20 minutes (and enjoy the sightseeing while we walk). The hotel was recently renovated, and both the connecting restaurant and bar were easily accessible. If and when I do return to Amsterdam, I will return to this hotel. read more

We had a lovely stay at this hotel in Amsterdam for 5 nights! It is situated in a great location that is right next to Dam Square and a short 10 minute walk from Amsterdam Centraal station from which we took a couple day trips. The museum district is a 25 minute walk away, and the Jordaan neighborhood is also a short 10 minute walk away. The location really couldn't have been better! The receptionists were super helpful and friendly. My mom and I got a standard room with two twin beds, which was on the sixth floor (they have elevators). Our room was pretty small, but everything was clean and we were happy with our stay. We also had a nice balcony with a beautiful view. It could get a little loud in the evening though. There is also a restaurant attached to the hotel, and everyone who stays at the hotel gets a complimentary croissant and coffee or tea each morning. The croissants were delicious! They also have other great breakfast options and they serve dinner as well. Overall we were very pleased with our stay and would definitely be willing to stay here again! read more

This is a bit of a bait and switch situation. The hotel lobby is gorgeous. Great décor cute furnishings a nice little bar and restaurant. However, when you get up to your room everything changes. The room was spacious but has little to no light. It was so dark at all times in the room despite turning on all the lights. The bathroom has a horribly high threshold which we kept tripping over. The bed was comfortable enough. The television was tiny and hard to see from the bed. If you aren't going to stay in the room much it is ok, but I would definitely see if there are any other options. The location is very good. You are close to all the sites which is why they can bait and switch customers. The customer service was fine while we were there. read more

Do yourself a huge favor and avoid this place at all costs. There's many other hotels in Amsterdam. You'd probably be better off choosing any one of them over this place. My fiance and I stayed here in 2018 and absolutely loved it. We loved it so much that we were disappointed we could not stay here again in 2019 when the hotel was undergoing renovations. Apparently, they also renovated the staff and customer service, because this place is now incredibly awful. We had been looking forward to staying here again for three years so we were anxious to check-in on our recent stay in early October 2021. When we arrived we had the incredible misfortune of having to deal with an old male employee behind the desk. He made the entire experience awkward and uncomfortable for us. I guess he's not accepting of same sex couples because he was taken aback that we were sharing a Queen room. He kept asking if we are sure we do not want two beds and then ended with, "I guess the bed will be big enough." We are well aware of what room we booked and did not need or ask for his outdated judgment. The second incident happened several hours later that same day and was even more horrific. Typically, I wouldn't share this information in a review but it is absolutely necessary in this circumstance. While we happened to be undressed inside the room, an employee unlocked the door to our room and started to enter with two hotel guests! She shouted, "SORRY!" and quickly left but you know what, that "sorry" didn't do a thing for me. It was at this point I decided to write to the manager of the hotel, Herwin Otten, actually expecting something to be done. I received an incredibly weak apology and asking me to come talk to him at the front desk according to his working hours. I am not the type to book a trip and live in the hotel. I had many museum and other bookings planned for my trip, so it was not convenient for me to meet with the manager in person on HIS time, not that it would have done any good. So instead he writes back a ridiculous response. Regarding the awful gentleman upon check-in: he blamed me for it being a misunderstanding and told me the man is very accepting of everyone. OH, OKAY. So because you told me so means I have to accept it and that I should just completely ignore how he made me feel. As for the woman walking in on us naked, his excuse, "She was showing the room to two guests and thought she saw it was empty. She had "just as much of a hart [sic] attack as you did." First of all, my father passed away from a heart attack so I don't appreciate the insensitive analogy. Secondly, why do I care how this woman felt? HER FEELING EMBARRASSED IS LITERALLY NO CONSOLATION TO ME!!! Because she doesn't A) Have the ability to use her head to actually find out which room is actually vacant and B) Have the basic human decency to knock on the door first should not fall on me! He ended this weak email asking what he could do to make our stay more pleasant. Why is it up to me to decide how you should correct this vile mess created by your employees? If you can't decide how to to properly make it up to a customer, that is a failure of you as a manager, Herwin. And yes, Herwin, you are a complete failure as a manager. Oh, it doesn't end here. On our second day at the hotel upon returning for the evening, we noticed housekeeping removed all of our towels yet did not provide any new ones. So that was a fun and unnecessary inconvenience for me to have to deal with the front desk employee working the shift alone. Next up, we have the uncomfortable temperature of the room to discuss. The windows in this particular room did not open, so we only had the alleged air conditioner to rely on. Except the air conditioner didn't really produce cool air. I call down to the front desk and the man puts me on hold and then comes back to the line to inform me, even though the AC states it will cool down to a certain temperature, it won't. It won't go below the temperature outside regardless of how hot and miserable it is in the room. As stated, we could not take advantage of the temperature outside because the windows did not open. So we suffered with sleeping in a hot dry room and both of us returned home with sinus infections we are still trying to shake. How did Herwin decide to make it up to us after all? On our final night, we came back to the room to a 10 euro bottle of wine. Okay, I guess it was a gesture, but it was a far cry from what we should have received, which is at a MINIMUM a night free off of our stay. We will return to Amsterdam many more times but we will NEVER return to this place that was once wonderful. What a dump. read more

I LOVE DIE PORT VAN CLEVE!! This is my absolute favorite hotel to stay in when I go to The Netherlands. Great price, premium location, and outstanding staff. I have stayed at this hotel more times than I can count over the course of probably 6yrs. This hotel has very reasonable prices and is unbeatable given it's location. It is located behind the Royal Palace, which you can see from the restaurant window and some of the hotel room windows as well. Right outside the front door is a tram station that can take you wherever you need to go. Walk 2 minutes forward and you are in Dam Square. If you walk 2 minutes right from the entrance, you will be at Albert Heijn. As for the hotel itself, I love the rooms as they provide everything a man may need. It has a pretty modern feel to it and I've never had problems while staying here. There is Wi-fi available, as well as a computer to use downstairs and a very quiet and relaxing seating area. The restaurant I've only been to for breakfast which is a traditional dutch spread with breads, meats, cheeses, pastries, etc. Don't waste your time taking a cab or tram from the train station (unless you have heart conditions). My wife and I stayed here on vacation. The staff was very friendly. We had room service a couple of times and the quality of the food was surprisingly good. I can't say I've ever had room service food in the states that was as good as theirs. Our room was very dark at night despite having all the lights on. The toilet smelled like sewage frequently. The shower/tub had a strange glass splash guard. It only spanned half the length of the tub. Whenever I took a shower, water would splash outside the tub. There were no cabinets to put clothes in but it wasn't a big deal. The bar, Blauwe Parade, was pretty nice and one of the bartenders(older gentleman) was really awesome! The hotel was wonderful. The front desk staff was extremely professional. They even provided complementary handwarmers and offered the use of an umbrella. Our hotel room itself was remarkable. We stayed in a business suite with a large amount of room and an incredible view. The downstairs pub was great with authentic Dutch artwork. Hugo, the barkeep, was very personable and easy to converse with. He was fun, full of knowledge, and provided a great experience. The only complaint I have was the bar/restaurant staff manager who was Extremely inconsiderate and RUDE. Her attitude deterred us from re-visiting or ordering food from there. This hotel was rated as 4 stars through the booking service I used, but I would describe it as 2 stars. My first night, I was placed in a room at the front of the hotel, under a staircase. The room was tiny and awkwardly laid out (it had a small stair case inside of the room and short slanted ceilings). The lighting was horrible, even with every light on, it was still dark. Also there was an awkward window right beside the head of the bed, that didn't have properly fitted black out curtains. Thus at night, lights from the street came in and kept me up. The bathroom toilet was clogged when I arrived and had a terrible plumbing sewage smell, even after it was fixed. Also the tv didn't work. I was so fed up, that I asked to cancel my remaining nights at this hotel, but I was unable to do so. I guess I booked a non-refundable rate. However they did allow me move rooms.  I moved to a room at the back of the hotel. It was still probably the smallest hotel room I have ever stayed in, but it did have a better layout and lighting. However, when I woke up the following morning, none of the electricity worked and my room smelled like cigarette smoke. This is suppose to be a non-smoking hotel. The toilet also did not flush well so I found myself avoiding using the bathroom in my own room.  Overall, the hotel is in desperate need of a make over. They seem to be in the process of renovating their lobby and bathrooms, but that really isn't enough. I understand that they can't make the rooms bigger, but some lighter colored furniture, better lamps, new carpeting, and upgraded electrics would go along way. Also they have one elevator for 8 levels so it is incredibly slow. I would normally take the steps, but they are extremely steep and short (only half of my foot fit on the step). It would be impossible to take the steps if you have any sort of luggage.  I would not recommend this hotel. It was one of the worst I have stayed at. Yes, the location is great, but you can stay further out, at a nicer hotel, that's cheaper, and just take the tram to this area. read more

Loved this hotel and location! Very close to everything as it is directly behind the Royal Palace and the staff including Cherieza at check in ,who helped us find a doctor to replace medicine that was stolen in our backpack on the train , and Thom at checkout helping us book our onward train ticket to Frankfurt. They were both so accommodating and gracious and I highly recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Amsterdam. Rooms were very clean and all new baths and comfortable beds. read more

First, I have to say I'm slightly torn on how to rate this hotel. It's tough since the Van Cleve is so old there are going to be some things that come along with the age of the hotel like the very squeaky floors which can make it tough to sleep when the people above you are moving at all time of the night like I experienced. The rooms are very small and the room was warm too. The windows in my room were locked for some reason so there was no break from the warm temps when trying to sleep. The staff here is outstanding though. They are very accommodating and always looking to help. You can self park (if you have a car obviously) for $45 euro a night or have a service come pick the car up for $35 euro a night which is what I did. The only draw back to the service is it will take the a while to bring your car back and there is no "in and out" service. The car is stored away from the hotel. The restaurant in the hotel is excellent and the bar is good too. If you're looking for a place to enjoy the room, this probably isn't the hotel for you. If you're looking for a place that has a lot to offer and you'll be outside the room most of the time, this hotel may be for you. read more

This hotel is shitty, and the smell in the bathroom confirmed it! They had a piping issue in my single room and the bathroom literally smelled like sewage. Also, the maid left a used cleaning rag on the chair. It was too nasty! I needed to switch! But even in non-stinky rooms, the furniture was uncomfortable and had flat pillows. With that said, the hotel is in a supreme location. Right by Dam plaza. And for an additional fee, they do provide a decent breakfast. But in summary, this place sucks so hard. My husband and I recently stayed at Die Port van Cleve for a week. The hotel has a lot of history and was originally a Beer House/Brewery of Heineken and the Hulscher Brothers. It is centrally located and walking distance to all tourist attractions and sights. There are many food and drink options across the street, a grocery store next door and the Jordaan neighbourhood is a 5 minute walk away. There is a tram stop located directly outside the front of the hotel for those who prefer not to walk to some of the sights that are located a bit further away. Upon arrival, we were upgraded to a Superior room which was large in comparison to many other European hotel rooms. The room was beautifully decorated, very clean and the bed was super comfortable. We had a view of the main street and the De Nieuwe Kerk (The New Church) as well as the Royal Palace of Amsterdam from our room, which I thought may be loud, but the sound did not bother us. The hotel offered a complimentary croissant and coffee each morning in the Hulscher's Restaurant. Otherwise, we did not dine at the restaurant, but on Thursday evenings they have a lovely jazz night. The hotel bar was cosy, offered a good selection, and the bartender was very friendly. The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful for the duration of our stay. We would absolutely stay at Die Port van Cleve the next time we visit Amsterdam. read more

We were fortunate enough to come across this hotel during our search for places in Amsterdam. I would recommend this place to anyone. We were a late arrival for our very short stay in Amsterdam. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted and informed we were upgraded to a business suite. It was amazing, so much room, spectacular views and the location cannot be beat for the price. I did make sure to add the breakfast when booking our stay and it was nothing short of amazing. We will ALWAYS stay at the Die Port Van Cleve when in Amsterdam and have recommended it to several other travelers we know. read more

I had a couple days to enjoy myself after a week of work in Rotterdam. I stayed here because it was a "deal". So, I guess I was expecting the worse. This is not a business hotel which I'm used to but a decent place in the heart of Amsterdam. Well suited for tourist. The hotel is old and maybe because I had a deal I ended up in a room that was in an "annex". The room was a little worn but by no means a problem. I like rooms to be clean and I would rate this as clean enough...I am picky about cleanliness. My room was over the alley and with the windows open (ah fresh air) there was a bit of street noise but Friday and Saturday in Amsterdam, what do you expect? The staff provided excellent service. Friendly, helpful. Helped me kill some time before check-in by selling me a ticket for the canal rides. The included breakfast (buffet) was ok, typical European buffet breakfast. There is a nice little bar that was comfortable for an evening nitecap. It wasn't very busy but I just wanted to have a beer before going to bed. If you want a place located in old Amsterdam but situated nicely for walking then this will work. Are there better places? Sure but for $200 per night with breakfast included and in this location, hard to believe you could do better. read more

Two stars for the location and free and unmetered wireless Internet. But the hotel is going under a "soft" refurbishment which means the AC doesn't work and the shower temperature fluctuates between 10 and 70 degrees in less than 3 seconds. The lifts are awfully slow and shared by the staff (and their loads). There is no fridge in the room and the room has another persons window as the view. Avoid it if you can and since it's not that cheap anyway, it must be possible to find a better alternative. read more

I had an absolute blast at this hotel! Yes, the decor is not what you'd expect (its a bit outdated). However, the place has charm that far exceeds its lacking interior design.
