Although we are still staying at Hotel Kutuma and will be checking out tomorrow, we wanted to leave a review before we leave because our experience has been so wonderful. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel welcome and at home. Everyone has been exceptionally kind, professional, and helpful. Our room is beautiful, comfortable, and impeccably clean, with unique charm and attention to detail that make this hotel truly special. The location is excellent, within walking distance of great restaurants, cafés, shops, and many of Montreal's attractions. Everything about our stay has exceeded our expectations. We booked this hotel so last minute and when we got there the front door was closed and we had to wait 5 min or so until someone came down to talk to us. This is a boutique hotel and I guess they just close the front door during the night. Anyhow, we told the worker who came down that we were there to check in but he didn't even hear us and kept saying they're fully booked. I tried to explain that I made a reservation through booking.com and was confirmed but he wouldn't even check and said they must have overbooked. Nothing we could do when he insist they don't have a room for us, so we just got in our car and start looking for another hotel. Then after 10 min or so, he came back down and knocked on our car window saying that it was his mistake and they have our reservation. Out of frustration, I wanted to just cancel it and stay at someplace else but it was already past midnight and we were exhausted, so decided to just check in. I was initially so upset with this guy about not even checking before he rejected us, but he was so apologetic and waived our parking fees and also gave us free breakfast so I felt better immediately. Our room was on the 3rd floor and there was no elevator but he helped our luggage to our room so had no problem. After we got to our room, we were so surprised pleasantly as it was much nicer than we thought. Also their breakfast was really good and we could even choose either dine in the restaurant or get it delivered to our room. Overall, I enjoyed our stay there and even though we had a little mishap before check in, we were compensated fairly and left there feeling good. read more

Totally wish we'd been able to stay at Hotel Kutuma for our entire trip! It was a beautiful and affordable little boutique hotel, situated in a great location so you can easily walk to all kinds of fabulous restaurants, tourist spots, coffee houses, shopping, and Mount Royal. Kutuma is a very small and eclectic hotel. All of our Uber and cab drivers were like, "what, where?" when we gave them the name and address. There are only a handful of rooms, I'd guess no more than 12-15, and the theme is African! Animal print everywhere and a fantastic Ethiopian restaurant down stairs called Blue Nile (which I'll write a separate review for). Our room, a King Suite, only cost us about $450 for 4 nights - taxes included. That's a fantastic deal, especially when our experience was so wonderful and unique. Our room had a king-sized bed of course; a large TV mounted to the wall; a pretty huge comfy couch with big pillows; a large coffee table with wine glasses and place settings for 2; and a kitchenette complete with refrigerator, electric stove top, microwave, toaster, clean dishes/cups/silverware/wine glasses, a coffee/espresso machine, a tea kettle, and storage space. It was so perfect. The bathroom was spacious and ultra-clean. There was just one sink and not a ton of counter space, but no big deal. The only thing I truly didn't like was the frosted glass bathroom door. From the room, you can see right through the door directly to the toilet (especially because the bathroom isn't around the corner or anything). I mean, it's frosted glass, so it's not like a clear window.. and I was traveling with my significant other... but I still like privacy in a bathroom! The concierge and staff were wonderful. We showed up our first night at 1 AM, and they gave us a call to make sure we were okay and knew how to get there, plus they sent us up some complimentary wine upon arrival. It was an extremely relaxing visit, and I would totally recommend Kutuma to anybody looking for a unique, clean, affordable, and intimate hotel with a delicious restaurant/bar right down stairs. read more

I used to stay in a chain hotel in city center and after I tried this hotel, this would be my go to place when I have guests visiting Montreal (now that I live here!). Very personal welcome, warm and welcoming staff and room. Awesome breakfast. Valet parking for car. Great location, close to subway and many restaurants, bars and stores. They also have a restaurant for dinner and I heard great things about it but did not try yet. read more

My first time to visit Montreal started out very well. Hotel Kutuma is a lovely boutique hotel that is wonderfully located within walking distance to the many places to see in Montreal and surrounded by so many awesome restaurants that it's hard to choose. The room/suite is beautiful with its African themed decor. The front desk staff is very friendly and helpful. I only have a couple of small details that make my rating hesitantly lose one star. The room does not have enough or very well placed outlets. It made it very difficult to plug our phone chargers in. Also, there is not a shower stall in the bathroom. A shower head comes from the ceiling above the double whirlpool tub. The water splashes all around the tub when taking a shower because there is no barrier. One thing that I really like is how comfortable the bed is. I would definitely come back. read more

This has been one of my favorite hotels I've ever stayed at! I LOVE boutique hotels, and this one fit the bill perfectly. I wish the check-in time was a bit earlier, but they're small, and they were still courteous to hold my stuff while I explored Montreal. They also have a ton of stairs to get to your room, which was not a problem for me, but if you struggle with stairs that might be something to lear you away. The service and room was exquisite! I loved the staff here, and my room was super relaxing, and very charming! The restaurant attached to this hotel was where I had my favorite meal, and the first time I ever got to try Ethiopian food! If I ever come back I'd book this place again 10000%. read more

"Um, can we move in?" This thought occurred to us for the entire 3 night stay that we booked for our mini-moon. Why stay in a soulless hotel in tourist- or nowheres-ville when Kutuma offers super comfy, spacious rooms in a central location for excellent value?! BED: Memory foam pillows and bed topper. Super heavy comforter and throw blanket. BATH: good water pressure, faucets take a little bit of tweaking. AMENITIES: Kitchenette with full electric range, mini-fridge, microwave plus kettle, coffeemaker and express coffee too. GENERAL: Super clean & responsive housekeeping. Street noise is negligible if you're used to living in the city & it's an unusually quiet stretch of St Denis anyway. The outer door is a bit tricky but 24/7 concierge helps. read more

This is undeniably one of the top choices for a boutique hotel stay in Montreal. Superb location on Rue St-Denis - excellent if you want to escape the typical touristy traps of the Old Port and Golden Mile hotels. Each room in a mini suite ( some not so mini) including a very functional kitchen, luxe bath, and high end fixtures throughout. There is even an espresso machine in the room! The hotel shares space with the excellent Blue Nile Ethiopian restaurant which means that not only can you get Ethiopian food room service, but you can get superb VEGAN room service. How often do you find that? Of course, what makes any boutique hotel truly worthwhile is the staff, and Kutuma's is uniformly excellent. Never run into anyone here who isn't top notch and it manifests itself in every small detail of every stay. My highest recommendation! read more

This place was a gem. Reasonably priced in a perfect location in the heart of the Mont Royale neighborhood. Literally a three minute walk from the metro station and surrounded by many many restaurants and bars. The staff was super friendly, with good tips on what to do, where to eat, etc. Our room wasn't ready when we got there because it was hours before check-in time, but they kept our bags, called us when it was ready, and took our bags to the room. The room was amazing. New, upscale finishes. Fridge, microwave, coffee maker, iron, everything you would expect from an upscale hotel. The hotel only has six rooms/suites, but that was definitely a positive. I would definitely stay here again on our next trip to Montreal. read more

Worth noting: This is my first Yelp review, and I felt inclined to write about my experience. Hotel Kutuma was the perfect ending to every touristy, walking filled, face-stuffing day. From the beginning, I could tell this hotel was great in how they were willing to accommodate my needs. They do speak English as well in a city that leans toward French, so I felt very comfortable. On the day of my check in, my plane landed early-ish in the morning. Given they had to prepare the room, I was understanding that I could not check in right away, however they were very understanding and held my and my girlfriend's luggage, allowing us to explore the city for a while that first day. I stayed there for a total of five nights from 4/20 to 4/25 (yesterday...), and whenever I entered the hotel, three things would happen each time. One: I would be greeted with the most amazing smells from the building shared restaurant. Two: I would be greeted with a genuine smile and hello. Three: I would feel a wave of comfort knowing I was about to come into a beautiful hotel room. My difficulty in writing this review is deciding to talk about the service or the hotel room itself. For now, I will talk about the room. I was staying in "301", one of the deluxe suites. I had a nice window view, a very large bathroom with a shower hanging above a centralized jetted spa tub. Nice. The bed was stupid comfortable, and large enough to save my girlfriend from the usual dread of finding my leg draped over her in the night. The large kitchen was equipped with an oven, a coffee maker, espresso machine, a tea kettle, dishes and utensils, refrigerator and freezer. Between the bed and the kitchen was a living space with a full couch and large matching chair. Basically, I never felt claustrophobic in my entire stay there; the room was huge. The decor was beautiful and unique, and I could not have been happier with my room. But again man, the service. On my final night there, I walked in and my girlfriend and I both smelled something sweet. I asked the gentleman at the lobby if they served dessert at the restaurant (Nil Bleu, which we had already enjoyed for dinner twice). He very quickly ran to get a plate displaying their dessert mousse cake things and provided his recommendations. I understand that this is his job, but he and every other employee there seemed genuinely happy to help, and at no point, did I feel I was a bother in asking for anything. One "asterisk" on the quality of this hotel that I have read in the past is that they only have stairs. I was a bit worried about this, but I think most people will find that with how much walking one is bound to do around the city, a couple flights of stairs is child's play. Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. The decor is unique and the service is unparalleled. And the food is re-donksville (that's good btw). If I go back to Montreal, I would immediately try to book here. Au revoir! read more

I have never been moved to review on Yelp before, but my experience at Kutuma has changed that...Everything is wonderful about this place. What makes it better than the rest however, is the staff. Every single person I met ( I stayed 5 days) was incredibly friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. Right now as I write this, Vlad (hope I spelled that correctly) is busy searching out good food for me to order.... I am offered delicious coffee at every turn, and my room is beautiful. Each day when I arrive back, my messiness has been replaced with a perfectly turned down room- complete with music playing. This will be my third night ordering from the restaurant downstairs- which is also fantastic. I highly recommend this hotel to everyone. PS. It is worth paying for the valet parking, as this is not a very car friendly part of town. read more

WORST EXPERIENCE IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. MANAGEMENT IS A JOKE. I booked the Deluxe Suite 2 months ahead of time after explaining on the phone that it was for a bachelorette party of 8-9 girls around 30 years old from out of town, they warned me that the noise policy was quiet after 11pm and I said no problem, the girls will only be there to have some snacks and get ready for dinner, nobody will be coming back later. The girl on the phone even tried to convince me to get the penthouse suite because of the size of my group but I said it wasn't necessary. 1 month later I called back to ask some questions about the suite, mentioning the bachelorette party and I was informed that I got upgraded to the penthouse suite for free! On the day of the event, I got there around 2pm in case I could get an early check in to set up the suite because the girls were scheduled to arrive at 3:30PM. The hotel said the room wasn't ready yet and they made me wait 45 minutes. That's ok, I was early. But then, the guy comes out and tells me that he was asked to tell me that I can't have more than 2 people at any time in the suite. I said that it must be a misunderstanding, we discussed the size of my group many times over the past weeks. I asked to speak to a manager and I was told there was NO MANAGER ON SITE. On a SATURDAY. I ask the kid again, there must be someone I can talk to to fix this, and he comes back with a man in a suit that I understood was the hotel owner. I proceed to explain the situation to him and he CUTS ME OFF MID SENTENCE AND SAYS "NO NO, SPEAK TO THAT GUY." POINTING AT THE KID. Ridiculous. Owner wouldn't even take credit for his decision and threw the kid under the bus. What a disrespectful and shameful thing to do. I had to call a bunch of hotels around a find a last minute expensive small room. So yeah, don't go to Kutuma unless you like to encourage businesses that treat their customers AND their employees like shit. I'm happy we didn't go after all because the A/C was not working well and it was really hot in there. read more

Nice small hotel with only a few rooms. Quiet, clean and secure. Fun African decor with popular Ethiopian restaurant on the main floor. Cons are no lobby to hang out in, and slow wi-fi one of the days we were there. Definitely recommended if you don't want to stay in the Old Port. read more

I want to like this place, and it's trying to be a good hotel. The people are very polite, the bed is nice, and the bath is fancy. It has a kitchen. However, my room faced the street, Saint Denis, and was quite noisy, especially on the weekend. It was hard to sleep, and the noise is beyond the hotel's control. Though there were lots of clunky footsteps in the building somewhere. Its hard to park at the hotel, and I ended up paying $15 a night for valet parking. It's best to have no car in that area. We checked in intending to stay a week, stayed a couple of nights, and then had to leave town early unexpectedly. The hotel charged us for two nights after we left because of a 48 hour cancellation policy they have, which applies even after you have stayed a while. You pay the entire stay up front when you check in. The hotel is part of a restaurant, and really has no lobby. There is a separate stairway and a booth next to the restaurant. I think the staff is shared with the restaurant. The rooms have exotic lights, which it took a while to figure out. And I could never get the AC set right, despite asking twice, so it was hot the entire stay. I think if the hotel had a more dedicated staff it might work better. read more

I cant believe that Im the first to review Hotel Kutuma. I stayed here about a year ago when i flew to Ottowa to see my girlfriend. we decided to drive down to Montreal and saw Hotel Kutuma and was entrigued by the Ethiopian theme (I am Ethiopian) and let me just say that I have a tendency to be harsher on Ethiopian owned businesses out of wanting a desire for them to always be better and improve but let me say that this place left nothing to be desired. Hotel Kutuma is divine, my hat off to the owners, and for a price tag of just $179 a night for a suite, it was a steal. The Hotel is themed around Ethiopia and the decor has a very African vibe, zebra skins, leopard skin, etc. but its done is a very tasteful manner. The owners did an amazing job in paying attention to detail, everything is just marvelous. Since the Hotel is small, the service isn't overpowering, you hardly see any hotel employees and I think its done purposely. We didn't really need anyone coz everything was perfect but on the couple occasions that we did they were very responsive and prompt. If you find yourself in Montreal please give this place a try and you will absolutely love love love it. read more

Based on reviews and the fact that it had a 4-star rating, I stayed here. It is not a 4-star hotel AT ALL. Firstly, the sheets were old, stained, and there were long hairs in it!! They changed the sheets with more worn sheets (also with visible stains) and I was really skeeved out by the old bed cover. And the rest of the bedding was dingy. Carpet needing vacuuming and the woman there agreed. Every 4-star place I've been in always has a lock safe and extra latch on door. Not here. The location wasn't as amazing as other reviewers have said especially if you're on foot and want to get around and see the rest of the city. The weirdest thing was I wanted to grab a bite to eat and the concierge sent me to the left down Ave Pine, then down St Laurent where there is just college fast food. I can't understand why she didn't send me to the right, through the park where there are lovelier little spots?!?! (Honestly, it's better to stay somewhere else and then pop over for half day). read more

I loved staying at Hotel Kutuma, and would love to stay again. Reasonably priced, great location, and the hotel staff is excellent. When we arrived we were greeted and told to sit down in the restaurant area while they prepared our check-in paperwork. They offered us some juice beverages (we both got the pineapple and coconut -- very, very good!), and then showed us up to our room once it was complete. Our room was on the second floor, which was nice, and although it faced the street, I didn't hear all that much noise. (One night we walked down towards the UQAM end of Rue St Denis and that's where all the noise was hiding!) The room was clean, comfortable, and featured a nice kitchenette area with a good sized mini-fridge, which including a freezer section for ice cubes and things like that. The African theme is present but not tacky or overwhelming. Our room featured the bathroom set aside in what was designed to look like a hut. We turned the lights on in there at night and it looked really cool! This place was comfortable, unique, and I really had no desire to leave. read more
