My husband and I visited hotel Rapids eatery on a Saturday morning for breakfast. This is a small spot within a somewhat recently renovated hotel. We really enjoyed that they had a unique option of crêpes and delicious coffee, which is not common in northern Minnesota. Overall, we had a great breakfast. I would highly recommend getting both a savory option and a sweet option as the portions are not very big. The coffee was also delicious. The service was very friendly and quick and the overall vibe was cozy. I would definitely recommend. Because this is in a hotel the parking lot is large with plenty of space. read more

TLDR: we recommend this motel, and will stay again anytime we're in the area! Posting separate cafe/bar review. We stayed 3 nights in unit 20; it sits atop the office/bar, so it sticks out from the rest of the motel, windows on 3 sides. It's a super cute unit! Very impressive remodel. I loved the black-and-white photo art on one of the BR walls, it would be really cool to see more art in here. We loved that it had a heated mudroom at the foot of the stairs to remove your boots before you come up to the unit. A little bench or stool in there would be nice to sit and take off your boots for those of us who are over 40. ;-) The suite had just about everything we need, which typically never happens. There were even wine glasses! It could use a can opener and some dish towels, but other than that, the kitchenette was well appointed. We loved having a toaster. There were even hot plates (but no pots to cook in) and 2 coffee makers. My only complaint is there was no decaf coffee, and when I asked at the front desk, they said they only had caffeinated coffee for the rooms? Seems like an odd thing to skimp on, but I was able to purchase cups of decaf from the coffee bar downstairs, so not a huge deal. The fridge is a pretty decent size for a motel, it even has a separate freezer! An ice cube tray in the freezer would be nice. Each bedroom had a TV, desk, closet and full-sized bed. It would be nice to have closet valets to set luggage on- I typically like to avoid setting my bag on the floor. We loved having separate rooms and desks in each room, and took full advantage of them, as each of us had to work over our stay. Recommend getting queen beds in the bedrooms when they replace the mattresses. Beds were okay, but old and pretty soft, and probably should be replaced soon to match the upscale vibe they are going for here. Website says their bedding is "luxurious" and it felt fine, but we prefer 100% cotton sheets. And we noticed there were some rips in the comforters and pulls (from a dog?) on the rugs. Not a big deal, but details like this matter when you're trying to be upscale. We stayed toasty warm even though it was below zero all weekend. It has electric baseboard heating throughout the unit, but not sure what's up with the super loud heater in bathroom? It was the only heater that made loud noises, and we couldn't control when the noises happened, so it was irritating while we were watching movies together. But the great thing is we didn't ever hear any noise from other guests, even though below us was the office/bar. We did however constantly hear street noise, which can't be helped on a main thoroughfare. You get used to it after a day or so. Recommend bringing earplugs if you're a light sleeper, truck traffic goes through there all night long. They desperately need blackout curtains in all the bedrooms, it was wayyyyy too bright with just the blinds closed, even at night. Installing blackout curtains would help with the street noise as well. The only sour note in the whole weekend was the front desk clerk, Kayla. I'm not sure what her problem was, but she was rude, defensive, sarcastic and seemed angry to see me whenever I entered the office/bar. She seemed to snap at her coworkers as well, and made them visibly uncomfortable. Also- it really would have made our Sunday morning tons easier if we could have gotten a late check out, but they refused to allow it unless we paid for half a day. ($77). But, it was such a fantastic experience otherwise, I am still giving Hotel Rapids 4 stars! read more

Ok, I felt like I had visited a Rosebud Hotel straight out of Schitt's Creek POST renovations. It was honestly so much fun, and completely changed my opinion on motel stays. Would I stay at another motel? Only if it's redone like this In each room they had cool images of what the hotel looked like back in its "prime" aka before renovations. It was really cool to see! They had one of the best pet policies we've seen in idk how long: * $15 per dog * dogs allowed on furniture * no breed or weight restrictions * dogs allowed to be left unattended in a crate * pup packages provided with pet bed, tennis ball, and treats Hotel Rapids really has it all, too! They have the nicest mixologist from Denton that made HANDS DOWN the BEST old fashioned I've ever had. They also make phenomenal crepes. I did the "make your own" with bacon, egg, and cheddar - I ate the SAME crepe for 3 days. They have truly mastered the crepe making. There's also two patios, a sauna, workout room with one of those wifi trainer mirrors, and a yurt for activities. We can't wait to come back to Grand Rapids just for this cute hidden gem! read more

If coming from the south, you drive thru the countryside, then come to a 'town'. This hotel is right on the main drag. When we pulled up, we thought we were at the Schitts Creek hotel. Knowing they allow pets in some rooms here, I asked for a pet free room. I love dogs, I'm just allergic to them. There was a short, dark haired girl at reception, who was also (maybe) the bartender. As we were checking in, I nicely asked her to confirm we were in a pet free room. She ignored me and went about the check in process. Thinking she didn't hear me, I asked again. She again ignored me, so I let it go...figuring she heard me. Well we get to the room and it has an overwhelming perfume stench. This is a blatant sign of an establishment trying to cover up pet smell. Then I noticed dog hair all over the floor. My husband picked it up and I decided not to make a fuss since we were with another couple. That couple got a different room with no perfume or previous pet presence. After about 20 mins, my eyes started to swell and I couldn't stop sneezing. So I go to the front desk and ask the girl why she put us in a pet room when I asked her not to 2 times and put it on my reservation. She said *verbatim* "oh I thought you didn't NEED it and were just trying to be difficult." At that point, I almost lost my sh#t, but as an educated professional, I can play a poker face. I asked her if she had other empty rooms. She said yes. Then I said 'so YOU decided, without further inquiring on the reason for my request, that I was just being difficult and to spite me, you gave me a pet room'. She just blinked her eyes and stared at me. Not the brightest bulb in the box. I also saw dog hair on the top bedding when I went back to the room. Needless to say, we didn't stay here that night. I contacted the 3rd party I booked through and requested a refund on the aforementioned grounds above. Ohh and it's so loud there with the sooped up cars coming thru, they give you ear plugs (note image). You won't sleep anyways, as my friends who stayed there noted. So if you want a loud hotel, no sleep, to be covered in dog hair, with a spiteful front desk staff bc of the simplest request, this is your place! read more

If you look at the outside of this place, you might think "this is just another roadside motel". The building may have initially filled that function, but this is definitely not your "stay in the place and hope that no hookers knock on your door" kind of establishment. The rooms are recently renovated and feature a great combination of modern and historical decor. They have obviously put a lot of effort into the renovations, including soundproofing. We stayed in a room over the bar, and did not hear either bar music or highway traffic noise. The beds were comfortable and the room was clean and free of those off odors you sometimes get in motels. But then again, this isn't a cheap motel... The lounge features a great selection of drinks and beers, including from the area. The only thing they don't have is beer from Rapids Brewery - and that involves special licensing from both parties. Their mixologist made me an excellent drink that I will have a hard time duplicating. The lounge is a great place in summer - they have an open-air component to their lounge and it's a great place to sit and have a drink. I was pleasantly surprised to, in June in northern Minnesota, not get eaten alive by mosquitoes the size of small birds. Breakfast is NOT your standard hotel breakfast of eggs, toast, and sausage. They offer an amazing selection of crepes - all made fresh. The crepes are light and delicious and worth the trip, even if you stay somewhere else on your visit to the area. Our server was professional and friendly and make some excellent recommendations for us. Other reviews talk about how friendly and professional the staff are so I won't repeat that because I don't need to. if you're heading up to the Range, give this establishment thoughtful consideration. read more

Don't even hesitate -- just come. Where do I even start? If you come to Grand Rapids, you HAVE TO come to this place. Our eyes were initially caught by the great photos on the Google listing, but we had no idea the experience we were in for. The first employee we met was Brooke. She was not only friendly but we noted that she also makes crepes and operates the kitchen (their crepe menu is EXTENSIVE btw). We asked her about their bar and she told us we had to come to the bar with Chris, the bartender, because he is the best in town. We didn't have time to stop at the bar on our first day, but we stopped for breakfast the next morning and met Nancy. Not only did she ALSO make incredible crepes, but the way she talked about her coworkers made us want to come back. That night, we met the highly-acclaimed Chris, who we ended up keeping way past his clock out time by accident by sharing stories and passions. The amount of creative passion he exerts for not only his cocktail curation but the hotel team/family kept us effortlessly in conversation for hours. If you want to have an interesting convo, stop by the bar. We also met the manager Lauren, who was super friendly and talked about how much she loves working here. All in all, you can tell that every single person here not only wants to be here, but loves people and creating an awesome experience. And that's not even covering the hotel. As for the hotel, the modern speakeasy vibes are amazing and it's a place you'll want to spend your free time on your trip. The room was clean and cute and everything was in great shape. Don't hesitate to stay here -- but if you do, make sure you het the full experience! But even if you're not staying here, you need to come here. Privately owned! Local owners work to keep this place going. So much character! It's an older "motel" with very updated and modern rooms. Really cool. With Covid, they were offering a $10/person breakfast voucher with made one of their fantastic selection of 12 different crepes about 2 bucks. Delicious. Each room has a little kitchenette, and the whole thing is 1/2 mile from the organic grocery store. Staff was friendly, helpful. This place should be SO supported! They are doing it right! read more

Ooof. I cannot remember a more disappointing hotel experience. I'll give the owners credit - they've done some beautiful work restoring the building. It looks absolutely beautiful online. And cosmetically great in person. But damn the queen room I thought I booked turned out to be an undersized "double" that was so cramped the bathroom door stops on one of the beds. The HVAC unit looked new on the outside- but apparently that was just a cosmetic job. It clattered and pinged and rattled so much we turned the heat off to silence it (38-degrees and raining at the time). The beds were hard, and small. Stayed here for a work trip with about 15 people. This hotel is cozy, stylish and accommodating. They were especially accommodating to our needs. We were a in town to film a tv show, we were coming and going at all times of the day and night with no problem. Names escape me at the moment, but the lady who manages the front desk in the morning and afternoon is awesome. She was checking people in, making crepes, pouring coffee and tending to everyone's needs in the lobby. The owner was a super nice guy too and very hospitable. The rest of the staff were very nice as well. This is definitely a place to go for a stylish get a way. Not a ton of amenities but the hospitality, crepes and (really tasty) coffee will make it special. And oh yeah..they have a yurt! read more

We stayed here for a hockey tournament. We were a little concerned when we found out we were assigned to a "motel" with no pool, having 13 - 9/10yo girls with us. However, the place is great! I can't tell you how friendly the staff is! The crepes were delicious, the rooms were clean and comfortable, the yurt was fun to hang out in, the drinks at the bar were great, I could go on-and-on! The owners have done a wonderful job transforming an old roadside motel into a destination stop. read more

We needed to make reservations in Grand Rapids to visit family. We are not late night people so I try to make sure to get a very nice, comfortable room to have a drink and read my book. When we arrived I realized this is a MOTEL, not a HOTEL! My first impression was not good. We were given our room key and proceeded to our motel room. Right outside our room was a small pile of cigarette butts and various garbage scattered around. I think it was the kitchen entrance right outside our room. Walked into our room and instantly saw very stained carpet. There was 1 very small window and terrible lighting. I knew that I would not be reading my book in this room tonight. On the plus side, the yurt with fireplace was nice. The happy hour is a good deal and the bartender was very nice. We tried to stay outside as long as we could enjoying Oktoberfest beer and the fireplace. The next morning as we left our room the pile of cigarette butts was still outside our room. We enjoyed the crepes and coffee in the morning. Went sight seeing with family on Saturday and arrived back to our motel room at 5:30. An employee was right outside our room smoking. She was a nice young woman so I feel bad saying this, but our room was clearly the smoking area and no one cleans it up. To end my review I want to say that my biggest disappointments are that this is not a hotel and for those of us that live far away, they need to be clear that this is a motel, the stained carpet, the terrible lighting in the room and the smoking and cigarette butts outside our room. I've been meaning to get this review out. I stayed there with my son, friend and two of his boys on our way to Lake of the Woods for Ice fishing. I cannot begin to say how awesome it was! A small group of us from work stayed in the suite. Upon arrival the decor appeared modern and looked nice. However it was noted that the counters were sticky and clearly had not been wiped off, no biggie... however when we did our bed checks to ensure there was no bed bugs the top bunk bed in one of the rooms firstly wasn't made, had no sheets or blankets or pillows and on the mattress protector it had a stain that appeared to resemble dried blood among other stains. It was brought up to house keeping where the lady had argued over the size of the bed for the sheets and just overall seemed displeased that we were asking for clean bedding. When housekeeping showed up she had a incredibly fake customer service attitude and looked upset that we had to use the top bunk. Then, in the middle of the night in went to the bathroom and realized that we do not have any extra toilet paper. I understand that things happen, I've worked housekeeping for many years growing up but I feel overall things could have been handled without attitude, or we could have been moved to a different room. It was decided that we will not be staying here when we have to come back in March for our next work training. read more

The remodel in our rooms is flawless. Beautiful. The staff is super sweet. The details are lacking though. Doritos on the carpet and food stains on bedding.
