A really wonderful lakefront resort, with everything you might want. They have free water sport rentals like stand up paddle boards, kayaks and canoes. They also have free bike rentals, a great sand volleyball court, horseshoes, basketball, tennis and pickle ball. And if the lake is warm enough, there is a waterslide in the lake which looked fun. We were here Memorial Day weekend, and the weather was beautiful our first day, so we took out the paddleboards, and that was fun. The weather got chilly quickly, so I didn't have the opportunity to try the rest of the amenities. The pool is currently closed for construction. (There is a nice pool at the YMCA in Grand Rapids which we used one day for a $10 day pass). We stayed in a two bedroom lakefront cabin which was nice, but fairly rustic, and one of the bedrooms had absolutely no storage, (no closet, shelves or dresser). Next time, I think we would stay in the lodge rooms, which are a bit more upscale, with fireplaces, full kitchens, Jacuzzi tub and nicer furnishings. They have a restaurant/bar on site with a an outdoor patio and nice view of the lake, which is convenient. They also have free coffee and muffins in the morning at the front desk and at Otis's.The staff and management were incredibly helpful, friendly and accommodating. I definitely recommend, and look forward to coming here again, hopefully when the weather is a little warmer! read more

My family and I stayed in a suite at the lodge during a family wedding. We got a suite plus another adjoining room so that we had plenty of beds and space. The suite included a table, chairs, a full kitchen, a couch and a big chair, plus whatever was in the two rooms with beds. The main bedroom of the suite had a massive jacuzzi plus a bathroom. Our room also came with a Keurig. Pluses: a restaurant on site. Our room was big enough people could gather in between activities. Plenty of outdoor games, water sports, a pool and tennis courts. The main area of the lodge is large and comfy. If you are in a party with a large group, they set up a large buffet breakfast every morning. Negatives: Our gas fireplace didn't work and the side bedroom was extremely dark at night. Not enough lights in the room. read more

I had a golf reservation for last Thursday at 10 am. Abby the pro shop manager calls me at 8 am, says we have to cancel your tee time cause not enough carts and we have a larger group that's playing that morning. I couldn't believe it. Abby, some day when you are more experienced at managing you will realize the mistake you made. My friends and I will never be back. Pokegama is a much nicer course to play. We accidentally stumbled upon this amazing place when we decided not to go to the North Shore. It is absolutely perfect. Tons of open space; activities for all ages; clean; friendly and affordable. Every year a group of friends and I come up here for a formal event. Although off-season (it's not exactly golf weather in April in northern MN), we always have a great time and Ruttger's is very accommodating. This year our event was held in Jack's Restaurant on the premises, and it was a beautiful restaurant! The steak and chicken served to us was fabulous, and the vegetarian option was absolutely divine! I am told the golf course is pretty good, although I've never played. The cabins (more like townhouse-like things) are also pretty spiffy. Comfortable with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (standard size), a well-equipped full kitchen and living room. All of them have sliding glass doors to the outside where there are numerous bonfire pits perfect for a chilly night! I would definitely suggest this place for any kind of retreat or large group event. They are very welcoming, even to rowdy young'uns like me and my friends! read more

This was the second summer that my whole family went here - we loved it so much the first time! It is a very family friendly place. We had grandparents children and grandchildren and there was something for everyone there. Included were free yoga classes outside in the mornings, a pool and beach, sailboats, paddle boards, kayaks and peddle boats all to use anytime. There was a morning coffee cruise offered each morning on a pontoon boat to survey the lake and look at nature. They also have a golf course that was very used but I don't golf. The accommodations offer a lot of choices. Everything from a hotel room, hotel suites, little independent cabins, and varying sized town homes called villas. They have full kitchens, grills and fire pits. We already made our reservations for next year!! read more

We spent our evenings out our backdoor using our firepit. During the day we could choose from golf, tennis, volleyball, paddleboarding, bags, kayaking, and fishing. Im sure Im leaving something else. The full kitchens make it easy to save money by cooking in, but the onsite restaurant and bar is ready when you want to go out. Morning breakfast is also included which is such an amazing perk. I haven't been to Ruttger's for awhile which is really too bad because I forgot what I was missing. We had dinner at Otis's on the deck overlooking crystal-clear sugar lake. The deck is spacious and had plenty of umbrellas to shield the sun. The drinks were good and the food was extremely tasty. I recommend the duck and bruschetta appetizers. They were amazing. The service was quick and the staff was super friendly. Better yet, the prices were reasonable. I will be back much sooner rather than later. read more

We just returned from our second year in a row as guests at Sugar Lake Lodge and we've already made reservations to return next summer. This is not an "all inclusive" resort but they sure try hard to be generous and not nickel-and-dime you. Example? All rentals of non-motorized boats are free and there are plenty to choose from including kayaks, sail boats, paddle boards, and more. Rentals of motor boats including the pontoon boats do cost but the rates are quite reasonable. For those with little kids, there's a free Kids Klub and the kids in our group wanted to go back each day. The resort also offers free water skiing or tubing most days. For the bigger kids, there's a bar and a couple of restaurants, golfing, fishing, firewood for the fire pits, and more. Accommodations are reasonably priced and varied. There are small cabins, traditional hotel rooms in the lodge, two and three bedroom townhouses, and probably some other options that I didn't see. Lodge rooms, I think, all overlook the lake. There's a swimming pool for those who don't like to swim in the lake, but the lake was warm, clear, and had a nice sandy bottom. Beside the pool is a small, sandy peninsula that serves nicely as a beach. read more

Overall we were pleased. Beautiful setting, ok golf course, water toys included, great food at Otis' Grill, incredible flower gardens and very friendly employees. The drawback was the small size of the bathroom in our golf studio apt. And the sulfur smell of the tap water. This was very noticeable when taking a shower. About a 15 minute drive into Grand Rapids. Don't miss a visit to the Forest History Center. read more

We stayed for our anniversary and they treated us fantastic. From Betsy at check-in, the gentleman at the golf course, Abby again with Yoga, and everyone at Otis's. It's clear that the staff that is there during the Summer season is the reason why people love it here. Thank you all for your customer service and friendly attitudes. Feel free to read entire review below but I'll sum it up: visit during June - August and you'll love it. Props to the staff. Avoid offseason unless you want to be treated poorly by owner To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. We were excited to stay here based on a lot of great feedback from others. We stayed here for a wedding that was just down the road. There was about 10 others staying there with us as there was a block of rooms reserved. When we arrived Friday night there was another large group having a conference there over the weekend. The gentleman that greeted us, Kraig, was very friendly and helpful. That's about all of the positive I can say about our experience. It was a two night minimum to reserve there but we thought it was worth the cost because of the activities and amenities that Sugar Lake Lodge had to offer. We were very mistaken. I emailed the week before to ask about options since it was after Labor Day and they mentioned that some things weren't available like Yoga class but nothing was explained that we wouldn't have any options. I went to the front desk on Saturday to ask about things we could do and the person at the front desk who I assumed to be a manager that was on made it even worse. He wasn't helpful and even rude. He said that nothing was available to us and we were told this before booking. He claimed that we would have gotten a phone call explaining that none of their normal amenities would be available. Nothing like this was done. To make things worse he didn't offer anything to try and make our stay more enjoyable. Other than saying that it want their fault and asking us if we would prefer to check out to go to a different hotel!! Unreal. Paid full price but none of the things they offer were available. Unfortunately for sugar lake lodge they had multiple times to try and make it up to us and failed to do it. I know the 5 other couples that I spoke to that had the same issues and were equally frustrated. If it's off-season and you aren't going to have the same amenities then you shouldn't charge the same prices as prime season and also make it clear with communication for online reservations. read more

Sugar Lake Lodge - Fun day of golf at Sugarbrooke, course in great condition! - Resorts Near Me - Cohasset, Minnesota

Beautiful lake and grounds, but the staff were not so good. The TV in our room did not work, the high school kid that came to "fix it" stated it was not working for the prior guest and they were told just to deal with it. Paying $250.00 for night I felt this was unacceptable. We went to the front desk and were told by the agent that there were no other room available and nothing she could do. Asked for a manger, who never showed, Kraig came and said are complaining about the shower, because there was a problem with that also in that villa. They said they would replace the TV with another, I went back to the villa to shower while we waited only to find that the tub didn't drain and I was now standing in ankle deep brown water. Another man came to the room, said he didn't have another TV, but did find another Villa for us to stay in which was much nicer than the one we were in. Funny, I thought there were no other rooms. Don't eat at the restaurant, they made the worst margarita ever, the pulled pork sandwich had maybe a tablespoon of meat on the bun. read more

This is for the grill.......the food was excellent and the server cheerful. However the management will not allow individual tickets with groups over ten. We had to figure out how much each family owed and pay with one credit card. If we would have figured it out differently it wold have favored those who ordered alcohol. Love this place! Just returned from a few weeks here. We had such a good time! The golf course was in fabulous condition, even after a 2 inch rain fall. Tim in the pro shop was super....and Mike on the grounds crew never fails to stop and say Hi! We got spoiled with some 2 1/2 hour rounds! Enjoyed the coffee cruise a number of times....Katie, who served coffee and muffins, was so pleasant. Of course we had to eat at Otis's....and like the expanded menu from last year. The kitchen accommodated our request to add a few items to our pizzas--nice. Ask for Brooke, she was a fun server. We also enjoyed the breakfast buffet at the Lodge a few times. Great value....and something for everyone. The front desk is very helpful (Jennifer, Craig)....and offering free coffee and bags of ice is a nice touch. Had to spend some time (and money) in the gift shop--fun items in there. At the marina, we rented the pontoons a number of times, and also enjoyed the free paddle boards and kayaks. Didn't use the fishing or sail boats, but many did! Items we also used and enjoyed: horseshoes, volleyball, bikes, fire pits (ample firewood!). Items we didn't use, but saw others enjoying: tennis courts, basketball hoops. The pool and beach area have lots of new loungers....and there are a lot of new adirondack chairs around the resort. We stayed in a golf course villa. Rooms have been updated with new carpet, bedding and wall decorations. Lodge brought extra grills when we had guests, and a large picnic table. The housekeeping staff stopped every day and refreshed towels, made beds. The wifi is Much improved from previous visits and the cable has a wider variety of channels than before. On the natural side....the lake is a gorgeous aqua and sooooo clear! We have never seen or heard so many loons as this year. At night, we had to do some stargazing as the stars seemed so close. Gotta thank the Lodge for arranging such phenomenal weather during our visit! While there, we saw family reunions, a bachelor party, wedding, and a business group. The resort has something for everyone...and Sugar Lake staff appears to go out of their way to make everyone happy. Somewhat surprised that during the summer weeks, that the resort is not busier. People are missing out on a great experience! We have already booked this little slice of heaven for next year! read more

Very cute place to stay on a gorgeous lake. We stayed here with another couple, only downside was our rooms were about 2 miles apart. If you're staying with other people make sure to ask ahead to get rooms near each, the resort spreads pretty far and we had no idea it was so large so we didn't realize we should call and ask ahead. Otherwise great place, they have all kinds of things to do, heated pool that looks over the lake, kayaking, pontoon rentals, a double cove beach, and a yummy restaurant. Most of the stuff is included except for the pontoon rental. The restaurant is really good, the pizza is great!! The rooms are nothing crazy special, just a normal room, but we're not there to stay in the room so the beautiful grounds, golf course, and lake totally made it worth it. They have fire pits dotted all over with plenty of wood to use and tons of little spots to sit with nice chairs to look out on the lake. We will definitely be back and plan on staying longer next time! read more

I was an employee here for many years and I know that many of the housekeepers do not do adequate work. Make sure to check your sheets to see if they are clean! The resort is great, but certain staff members will not make your stay enjoyable. There are only so many housekeepers for such a large resort and they are often times rushed, resulting in poor work and unsanitary conditions. read more

We came here for an event. For coming at the end of the summer season, it was pretty quiet. I was expecting to be just sitting around for a weekend because there was nothing to do---I was so delighted to see the staff cared and i had a wonderful time. I was blown away at how much detail the staff took for the few of us staying at the resort- they put so much effort into catering to any request- most of the staff was multitasking with several things- they put in extra effort to make sure we had a good time. My husband and I stayed at Sugar Lake Lodge for our honeymoon. We will never be back. The grounds were absolutely beautiful and the restaurant is the only thing that saved them from getting a lower rating. Food was excellent. The beach was absolutely disgusting! Geese and geese feces EVERYWHERE! Also, my husband and I waded around along the crystal clear beach and we both ended up with chiggers! (swimmers itch) We would never recommend this resort to any one. read more
