If you want a "continental Austrian" meal (mostly Germanic in this part of Austria), and have tickets to the Tyrolean music, folk dances, "shoe-slapping" and yodelling show next door right afterwards, then this is where you would eat. It's a place mostly for tour groups because of the location and how it's organized. It's organized very well. Everything is pre-set and everyone gets each course at the same time. The main course our tour company arranged for was schnitzel, of course. Everything is alright. In large group eating situation, this stuff is "safe" for everyone and easier to plan. Beer, wine, water flowed freely. If you despise the circumstance of which the tiny beer glass in front of you is negatively affecting your manhood, simply ask for a Liter glass and you shall receive.

There are about 8 deserts available. We each had a soup and a main. The portions where large and the taste was good, yet basic without much fantasy. A bit like the stuff an Austrian grandma would cook I guess. The waiter was alone and seemed busy. When I asked for a recomandation he did not have any. He was friendly nevertheless.

Overall fine hotel... with some SERIOUS caveats…read more It sounds almost unbelievable, but be aware that at least in the room we had, the bathroom doors and walls ARE SEE-THROUGH. This isn't an exaggeration: the walls and doors are actual, transparent glass. Frosted in some small places, but transparent enough to give a view into everything - including the shower (also with 100% glass walls) and the toilet, from which you have a truly splendid view into the room and vice versa. Great for open-minded couples I suppose but an absolute nightmare for anyone not willing to put their most intimate moments on display or ask their roommate to please leave the room while you're taking care of things. If, however, you can live with the display-window aesthetic of the facilities, the room, while compact, is pretty nice. The building is a bit older but that didn't stand out in a bad way, and everything that was of importance worked very well and was completely clean and well taken care of. In addition, I feel it must be said as a point of huge praise that the breakfast buffet is SPECTACULAR. Other hotels may have fruit on offer, but this hotel has FRUIT - not just the usual selection of local fruits like apricots or seasonal ones like watermelon, but a giant selection of exotic choices like passion fruit or tamarillo as well. All of which were fresh, unblemished, and readily restocked in an attractive display a mile long. Similarly impressive was the cereal selection, which included a muesli bar with at least two dozen different toppings. Truly above and beyond. It's not a giant buffet like some big chain hotel (this is a modestly-sized place after all) but for its weight class, it punches way above what you'd expect. In a world where breakfast has often been the first casualty of service shrinkflation, this one stands out. However, I just cannot get over the see-through toilet. Sorry, that is a deal breaker. Good gods.

I enjoyed the simple breakfast of coffee and cold cuts which is common across Germany and Austria and have to say that I really loved the various types of schnitzel. I ordered mine each night with a mix of side dishes. I fell in love with the Hungarian cooks Tyrolean spinach dumplings which were the size of baseballs. Affordable lodging, friendly warm hosts, and while the older members of the family don't speak English very well, the young managers and staff were able to talk to me in English quite well. Basically anyone under 35 spoke English. At night, I was lucky to see in the cafe a group of local musicians playing traditional music, and the ZIllertal valley where the hotel is located is a center of folk music, so the owners can usually point you to another cafe or hotel for music. Really sweet people, and prices that were a deal. There is a train that links the ZIllertal to the mainline train between Innsbruck-Vienna-Munich. Well worth the detour off the well worn tourist path for a taste of real Austrian hospitality.

So, the reception is exemplary, the food is as well. I'm no Austrian food specialist, but the food feels very traditional. You can taste the quality of the ingredients, and the passion applied to prepare the foods. The interior style is, well, very traditional. There is some difference between the rooms, but they are quite generous in general. Here and there they would benefit from some modernization. Staying here for winter holiday with food included is just a steal!
