What an amazing dinner experience! We sat at the bar and Matty and Sky were great, service was quick and top-notch! The holiday cocktails were delicious. The brussel sprouts were a great start. The harvest pasta was a perfect blend of classic fall flavors and perfectly portioned. We finished with the beignets which were paired with Whit's custard and a bourbon anglaise. The food was pricey but very good. The waiters were dressed unprofessionally for the upscale restaurant they are attempting to be, they did not check up on you, you had to order through a QR code, and you had to get your own water (which they did not tell you, we had to ask about water after having been there for 15 minutes). Overall, would not recommend. The food is good but does not make up for how expensive yet unprofessional it was. I am not sure this restaurant will survive if it does not match it's atmosphere/staff presentation to the price of the food. read more

Sat in the bar waited 25 mins for the first round of drinks and well over an hour plus for food, while others around our table had recieved their food before our table did and came in after us. Everyone in the party recieved their food except for me and my husband; the food did not come out all at once. 2 people got their food, then later 2 more got their food, then 2 more got theirs spaced out around a 15 minute time frame. A few minutes later one of the individuals with us went up to the counter questioning why 2 people still hadn't received their food. A few minutes later the waitress cames over and said it was going to be 10 more minutes for our food (we had steak and lobster). By this time a couple of people had finished eating their food. It had been 15ish mins since the first set of plates were delivered. Yes, it was on Valentine's Night but they also had a very limited menu. You order on your phone for food and drinks.....when my husband asked for water they pointed across the room and said you can get water over there, when he asked for extra napkins he was told the same thing. Would definitely come here again. Great atmosphere. Tasty food with large portions at a good price. Great service. Came here early for dinner. I would definitely recommend coming early, as it seemed like they filled up quickly. As well, their pit smoked beef brisket is limited, so it does sell out. They have some great seating both inside and outside. Lots of staff to help with service. I'm not sure what is going on outside on the lawn, but there are picnic tables which almost seemed like people had ordered takeout and did a little BYOB picnic in front. Incredible atmosphere. Incredible food. My wife and I love the fireplace, the old fashioned rooms, and the back patio. And I have never had better deviled eggs than here! Incredible. We love the steak and anything with their chicken. Homemade corn bread is so classy. From a service perspective, they constantly tidy up our settings, which is exactly what a high end restaurant would do. And any smart manager would keep the drinks flowing, which they do extremely well - great pours on the wine. Excellent date night destination! read more

BEWARE, FUTURE BRIDES! I usually don't write reviews, but I want to inform others about The House at Gatewood's unprofessional and insensitive owners. Earlier last year, I met the owners, Jen and Ron, to discuss having my dream wedding at their restaurant in December. As Covid cases worsened, we decided to keep the original date in December but keep the ceremony small and push our big wedding to November 2022. Jen and Ron agreed, so we proceeded to put a deposit down to save the date. Well, to put it bluntly, your deposit is entirely useless. To further elaborate, Jen won't contact you as the bride. Instead, she texted, not called, my mom in March to deliver this ridiculous news: "We need to discuss the date in November. Unfortunately, we can no longer do 11/5 or that weekend. We can either change the date or give your deposit back. However, the restaurant won't be useable that weekend." First and foremost, have the decency to call me, the bride, about this news, not my mom. Secondly, please explain how you define "won't be useable" when it comes to a venue? When we asked Jen to explain what "won't be useable" meant, she wouldn't respond. We have concluded they probably had another bride or event that wanted their space for the entire weekend. Jen decided to be selfish and take the event with more dollar signs than consider someone's feelings. So here I am now with no wedding and my dream dress hanging in my closet and facing the expenses of my photographer, DJ, and florist. My advice to Jen and Ron is to think about who you hurt, especially as business owners. You have kids of your own, and I hope they don't have to face the heartbreak that I had to face. Now when I think about it, you NEVER even apologized. My advice is to leave it to the professional because the owners are far from professional and unsympathetic. read more

Brisket cooked perfectly, Mac & cheese ( got double & no beans ), cornbread and ordered a side of Brussel sprouts. Do not waste your money. There are much better restaurants in Hillsborough. As you will read in other reviews, the cornbread is sweet but ok. I had the autumn salad with a dressing that was extraordinarily vinegary. Only ate a portion til I couldn't stand it. Ordered an app of dry rubbed chicken thighs for my entree with a side of seasonal brocollini. Both over seasoned. The thighs were a large portion of 3 - but were so spicy you could barely eat them. I only ate one. The brocollini was also over seasoned with too much garlic. Very unpleasant meal. My husband had short ribs over fettuccine also over seasoned and too spicy. No dessert was offered so I'm not sure if they serve any. The atmosphere is amazing inside and outside. That is the only nice thing I can say about this restaurant. read more

Hubby and I finally visited The House at Gatewood in Hillsborough. Atmosphere was nice. You are served cornbread when you sit. Cornbread was on the cakey side but we liked it. Appetizer of Brussel sprouts. I forget what they called them specifically. They aren't on the menu anymore on their website - probably a good thing. They weren't all that. Hubby had corn crusted catfish. Came with fries. It was good but the restaurant is stingy with ketchup. Maybe a tablespoon in small metal bowl. We asked for more and received another small metal bowl with the same amount. I had the scallops (of course!) on risotto with squash. Squash in the risotto was not cooked enough but the scallops were spot on. No dessert. I had a cocktail. Hubby had a cider. $85 bill. Willing to try it again. Meh. We wanted to go for weeks as people were buzzing about this place. The decor and atmosphere is very nice. The outside patio is a great feature. The food was so so. I had fried catfish that lacked salt and flavor and paled in comparison to Hillsborough BBQ. My wife had a burger and said it too was nothing special. My 10 year old had fried calamari and that was good. Too heavy on the sauce, but you could order that on the side. The service was decent. We might give it another go, but I can't say we were impressed. read more

We went to the House At Gatewood about 6 weeks ago and it was very nice and the food was awesome! The pork chops and the rib eye were amazing not to mention the corn chowder was the best I have ever had! With that said, you would think we would give it 5 stars but, unfortunately, we went back last week. The chicken thighs were overdone, the only bread they offer ( unfortunately)...the cornbread, was dry and the corn chowder was watery and tasteless. We are giving them 4 stars based only on our first visit. read more

Called ahead to get our name on the list for dinner last night and our part of 6 was seated promptly when we arrived. Great selection of beers on tap. Boiled shrimp appetizer was good. We were disappointed that they were already out of brisket at 7 PM, but other appetizing alternatives were available. I had the blackened catfish. Catfish was cooked perfectly. The slaw with blue cheese accompanying it was delicious. Another member of our party ordered the New York strip. The steak was cooked perfectly and the sauce that came with it was delicious. Another member of our party had the salmon. Once again, the salmon got high marks along with the green beans that accompanied it. Desserts included banana pudding and beignets. Both were excellent. I have never posted a review but then again we have never been treated as poorly as we were this evening and I am compelled to share this in hopes that the ownership can self examine. We had wonderful food to be sure. We were a large party served at two tables by the same waitress. My father opted to pay both tables' bills nd questioned the automatic tip on the bill. In truth he usually tips better than 18% but he's old school and the idea that he's not able to reward service as he sees fit is off putting to him. After being passed to the owner my father shared that he would like to be able to choose the tip amount and he mentioned that we weren't offered water refills once. To which the owner responded by yelling at my father in a profanity laced tirade (including the F word). about the cost of water in Hillsborough. There was some further discussion about the bill and tip arrangement. The exchange ended with the owner telling my 72 year old father to get the "f*^%" out of here. Not once, but twice. Love the atmosphere and the food. Large portions of everything from your starters to the dessert makes it worth the money you spend. Perfect place to spend a a Friday evening for dinner with the warm fireplace going. The only thing I have to say negative is that Yelp has the incorrect address. I am posting a picture of the business card given to us during our meal, which has the correct address on it. Beautiful setting, friendly service, generous portions of hit or miss (but not bad) food. The house and decor are beautiful country chic (Chip and Joanna would approve). The outdoor space looks incredible and would be perfect for an event. The bar had cozy seating areas along with community tables. Our next visit will probably be in that space for drinks and small plates The service was very friendly, though not perfect. Our waitress was a little quick to remove plates and didn't replace silverware. But she was trying hard, knew the menu, and we felt cared for. The food varied between really good and just ok, but always in large portions. The cornbread was a nice surprise, but verged on cake-like sweetness. We started out with the Fried Green Tomatoes, which turned out to be dressed as a salad with arugula, radishes, pickled onions, goat cheese, and aioli-- it was the best dish of the night. My wife had the 4-Side plate with summer salad, baked beans, skillet potatoes, and tobacco onions. She really liked the salad and the beans, but the potatoes and onions were forgettable. I ordered the brisket with Mac n cheese and baked beans. The Brisket was good not great, but had a nice Smokey flavor. The baked beans were my favorite dish of the night--smokey, sweet, peppery, with lots of brisket crumbs. The Mac n cheese was nice and creamy with a tasty buttery topping. Luckily there were some pickled onions on the tray to cut through all the richness. I also had a Gatewood Manhattan, which was again was good but just not memorable. We'll be back. The setting and atmosphere is worth it, and the food is almost there--with some tweaks, it could be fantastic. read more

This was the first time dining with the establishment. Unfortunately, we weren't too impressed with the family meal we ordered for $50. It was supposed to feed four people and honestly, it realistically fed 2. Additionally, the risotto was pasty and not creamy. Not to mention it only included salad and entree, not dessert as well, like other establishments in the area. The property itself is very beautiful! Really great space for an event (wedding/bridal shower/party). The decor is just as beautiful. Super smart layout for a restaurant. A little open dining and then some private. I got the chefs special of the night, scallops, awesome, not a morsel left on my plate. Deviled eggs were very good! The ribeye was super divine, nicely seared, flavorful crust! We shared a spring salad that was fresh and seasonal. Good house cut crispy fries. The brussels were tender and well seasoned. The coconut cake was delicious as well. I would of liked an espresso or latte though :( The hostess' were super sweet and very helpful assisting us on our first time there! The complimentary cornbread is very dry with little taste, add some honey and salt! Wish there was more on their menu honestly, more appetizers, entrees, salads? I was confused on why they were serving brisket (a $20 dish) in a paper boat and aluminum trays... your not a food truck, or even a quick casual bbq place; ie) QShack... my scallops were beautifully plated, we expected the same for the brisket! She acted like getting us water was the end of her existence, gave us the immediate eye roll she set the water down so hard it sloshed up and split on my phone, no apology... more eye rolls for me asking for an extra napkin because of her carelessness. We ordered beer, and she purposely gave us beer that was half foam, I kid you not! I asked for her to pour a little of the foam out, she rudely said that's just how our kegs pour?! When I asked about the dinner specials, she said she doesn't memorize them and she'd get a server to come to the bar and tell us. It's like we were putting her out by wanting to be waited on?! We are super easy going people, I even tried to strike up a convo with her to get her maybe in a better mood, NOPE. She was stuck on being a spawn of satan. When I come to a place and spend $200 I don't expect to be treated like trash or my fanny to be kissed, just treat me with normal human kindness! The manager was behind the bar and could tell we were about to get up and leave so he came and smoothed things over and got our dinner order going. We appreciated his hospitality and kindness. We both got drinks, ordered a small salad as our appetizers (which we explicitly requested to be brought out before entrees). We waited...and waited...and they finally arrive! And then, 30 seconds later, here come our entrees. The waitress said sorry, it was put into the system incorrectly. Our food got cold while finishing our salads. The decor is decent but the bar needs some 2-tops and 4-tops. Not everyone wants to sit on bar stools at a communal table. Also, the bar needs a more extensive line of liquor; the cocktails choices are rather limited. I don't appreciate eating at a decently nice restaurant and then being served on paper barbecue trays. The management may think that this is a cute touch. It isn't. For the prices you charge, get plates to serve your food. And finally, your wait staff needs to do a better job SERVING customers rather than milling about talking with one another. This restaurant has so much promise and we want to go to it (and the bar) on a regular basis but it needs to make a few changes before we'll become regular customers. Good luck Gatewood! First visit tonight. Great atmosphere! They have done a super job on the space and decor. My food was excellent, got the pork chops, sides were grits and collards. The grits and tasso gravy were delish. Collards could have been cooked a bit more but were still tasty. Service was excellent. I am picky so I don't say any of this lightly. I'm so impressed with our first visit here! The restaurant is in a large house set back from Hwy 70, surrounded by trees, with a large gravel lot in the back that was surprisingly full when we arrived at 5:45pm on Friday. There's an outdoor patio with string lights that should be nice in warm weather. For now in winter, there are two indoor wood fireplaces (one in the bar, one in the restaurant), and a third outdoor fire at the entrance, all of which create a cozy feel. We just had oysters tonight, but they were nice and very fresh, 2 options from VA and one from Mass. Very nice wine selection by the glass. I'd call this "upscale casual" and from how busy it was early, I'd definitely recommend reservations. Very happy to have this new spot in Hillsborough! read more

The House at Gatewood is a wonderful addition to Hillsborough. From the food to the staff to the ownership, we are so happy with our dining experiences here. My husband can be very critical of smoked brisket, as he lived in Texas for a while. But he gave their brisket a huge thumbs up. My favorite on the menu is the pork chops. My daughter and I have food allergies - they handle that in a very detailed manner, making sure we are safe with our dining choices. And we have always received excellent service from the staff.
