Covered walkway coming in full of flowers and plants. The restaurant interior still gives you an open air feel with a wall of glass and the light scent of flowers. Staff came to us immediately for our drink and appetizer order then allowed us the requested time to view the menu. The ambiance and feel of the place is incredible! We ordered the Greek mimosa and the spartan Bloody Mary along with the avgolemeno soup to start. Then the Pasticho and mousaka .Being Greek we are very particular about our Greek food. The Greek mimosa was excellent, the flavors aren't anything like a regular mimosa it is a whole new experience, if you like a red or rose wine try it! The bloody mark has a bit of a bite but it too has a great flavor I would not order if you don't like spicy or can't have salt. The avgolemano was delicious just the right amount of lemon too simple and elegant just lemon egg chicken rice and broth with light seasoning. The Pasticho was excellent! They even bought the right noodles ! About as close to my yaiyas as a restaurant can get! The mousaka was also delicious. Many times you get it the eggplant is either greasy or hard. Kipo's has been a staple of Chapel Hill forever, even at its previous location downtown. The atmosphere tends to be the draw-- it's decorated well, there are some fun foods (flaming cheese?!), and there tends to be a Greek dance train on weekend evenings. I went with a group of 6 adults this past week and realized that the atmosphere no longer outweighs the other nits for us. The restaurant was maybe 80% full, but our servers couldn't find the time to check on us. We had a bottle of wine served, and maybe 15 minutes later needed more wine. We finally got our server's attention and we got more wine. Once our entrees came out, our server and wine guy never came back to our table. We even told them we would like more wine but they never came back with it. We would've bought 4-5 bottles of wine that evening had someone come back to check on us. Instead, we just sipped our waters until we were ready to leave. The food was honestly mediocre all around. The lamb was overcooked and inedible, the eggplant dish was over salted, etc. We liked our dips platter, but it came with a tiny bowl of pita and like three pieces of celery for $24, so most of the dips went uneaten. If someone had asked if we needed more pita or vegetables we would have said yes, even if we had to pay for it. But nobody did. I could go into more details (mansplaining and some belittling all around), but it's not really important. We realized there are restaurants in Chapel Hill that we'd rather visit in the future. I hope Kipo's is able to make some changes because we really love it. But in the meantime we're going to give it a break. read more

The covered outdoor area is very well decorated, and allows for a private little haven despite being so close to the street and parking lot one is not able to tell even in the slightest. Hidden away in the corner of the shopping center it is a little hidden gem. The interior is also quite nicely curated but if weather allows, I highly recommend opting for outdoor (coming for somebody who typically does the opposite. Went for a semi casual lunch and it was a great option. The menu reflected solid Greek options, with both meat and veggie focused dishes. While everything tasted quite good, the lamb was incredibly tough. Despite being described as slow roasted, both in gyros and sandwiches the lamb was near inedible. Knives and teeth could barely cut through, and despite chewing some swallowed had to just be of larger chunks. The meat itself was tough and there was just so much connective tissue. Now it did taste good but the eating experience was quite disappointing. Portion sizes were generous, and pricing was fair. Even desserts were large and easily shared with full plate sized baklava and slices. Service was friendly, though a bit slow for lunch and especially this cuisine. I had heard such great things about Kipos so we thought to try it this weekend. We started out with the sourdough and olive tapenade as well as the saganaki. Sourdough was yummy. Saganaki was probably my favorite but we didn't get it on fire :( so that was the only sad thing. i had the salmon which was just okay - it didn't really have flavor to me other than lemon. like the spinach rice was soaked in lemon juice. my tongue was raw after - i wouldn't get it again. The indoor and outdoor dining spaces are also large and roomy for each party. The dolmadakias were fresh and very acidic-- each order came with four grape leaves and three lemons. My mom and I shared a salad and sandwich, which was plenty for the both of us. The Marouli salad was fresh with a fresh, acidic punch from the lemon vinaigrette. I also LOVED the crunch from the sunflower seeds. The Kotopoulo sandwich had a thick, buttered brioche with juicy chicken, pesto, tomatoes, mozzarella, and arugula. I wish there was a little more filling since the bread was thick and dense, but it was a very decadent bite. The flavors went together very nicely. Also, the fries were cooked to PERFECTION with their crunch and seasoning level. Friend and I had a midweek lunch at Kipos. We hadn't been since the shopping center and the restaurant flooded,and we were anxious to try it out. It was a warm May Day so we sat outside, which was a good choice as the hostess told us the a/c was broken! They've repainted the murals outside and the 'grape arbor' was freshly painted,too. This made for a relaxed luncheon setting. Our waiter was quite attentive and came to us right away. We ordered fried calamari and bread w tapenade to start. Both were delicious. Calamari was hot and crisp and bread had good texture and chewy crust. Our entrees were only 'ok'. Disappointing experience. I really wanted to love Kipos. The decor is lovely inside and the patio is very inviting with greenery. It makes you feel like you're in the countryside in Europe. I don't know if we just went at the wrong time, but service was extremely slow. We waited for our food for at least thirty minutes. Then the waiter let us know they ran out of hash browns, so they would substitute french fries for one of our plates. I think my husband's lunch had a total of 10 fries. Did they pull the plate away before they finished plating? Also, it was supposed to have two over easy eggs, and they gave us grey scrambled eggs. I mentioned the mistake to the waiter, and he questioned us and said he thought it scrambled eggs. After a back and forth, he said he would order us two eggs. We grabbed the menu to double check and he was incorrect. No one came back to see if we were happy with our food or if we needed anything else. My pork souvlaki platter had tough, overcooked, flavorless meat. The fries were fine. The sauce for the pork souvlaki was the only thing that was flavorful. Their beer tap lines were down, and they said they'd had that problem since yesterday. It's been a long time since i've had such a bad service experience at a restaurant. read more

We had a wonderful dinner at Kipos Greek Taverna in Chapel Hill. The ambience was absolutely charming--sitting outside on the covered patio surrounded by the scent of blooming flowers, it truly felt like we had been transported somewhere far from North Carolina. The covered patio was a bonus, especially when it started to rain during our meal--it didn't dampen the experience at all. The food was fantastic. My husband ordered the lamb chops and I had the moussaka--both were bursting with flavor, but the lamb was definitely the standout. Pretty good meal! I was blown away by the design and decorations of this place. Both the outside and inside are furnished so nicely; it seems like a lovely place to take photos. We came for a midday lunch on a Sunday and sat in a little corner inside. Unfortunately, it took us forever to place our order. Even though we were ready for a good 15 minutes, no one was servicing us. Finally, a waiter did come up and asked if we were being helped, but I said no. I guess the communication between staff was lacking. Anyways, I ordered the moussaka and my friend ordered the souvlakia. The wait for our food was also pretty long, even though they were not too busy that day. The moussaka was really good. It was a mix of ground beef, potatoes, eggplant, and cheese. It was SUPER heavy though. And honestly a little boring. It was very flavorful, but all of the flavors were a lot all at once, so I wish it was less overpowering. I definitely felt a little nauseous afterwords, but the cheesy crust was nice and tasty though. Impressively made! The souvlaki was delicious. Sides were wonderful. That Greek salad was a beautiful presentation. It appeared like they considered every nuance from plating to flavor. And you could tell that the staff cared about this place. We watched another table as they were brought a dessert that was flamed at the table. And the staff member was smiling as he lit the flame. We left after 8:30pm. During that time, the place got quite busy. At its busiest, the restaurant was almost completely full. I think service suffered as a result because I think they were understaffed. We liked our server Roman and thought he did a good job under the circumstances. The hostesses were friendly too. It was just slow -- dinner took over two hours. Kipos opened in 2013 and moved to its current space, in a corner of the Eastgate Crossing Shopping Center (Trader Joe's), in 2020. This restaurant is part of the Giorgios Hospitality Group. In Chapel Hill, the group's restaurants include the likes of Bin 54 (steakhouse) and Osteria Georgi -- a high standard. All the Giorgios restaurants I've been to, including Kipos, have been consistently good. My wife and I sat on the patio. Kipos has an attractive, spacious, covered patio with ceiling fans and heat lamps. To give you a sense of how covered the patio is, a storm rolled through while we were eating and we didn't get wet, though one guy at the table next to us had to move to a different seat at the same table. It's pretty well covered. It was lively inside and out. Inside, the bar, dining room, and open kitchen were loud and bustling. Despite the noise level, I think this is a good date spot and it also works well for groups. My wife and her coworkers have come here regularly over the past few years for work dinners (they've always sat inside). During our visit, the menus offered a decent variety of food and drink, from "Olga's Handmade" Spanakopita ($12) and Kakavia - Fisherman's Stew ($32) to house cocktails, local North Carolina spirits, and a bevy of Greek wines. Below is what two of us ordered for dinner. It should give you an idea of what the prices are like. Craft Cocktails * The Manolada ($14) - strawberry-infused rum, fresh lime, basil, and sugar, topped with ginger beer Meze (appetizer) * Melitzanosalata ($10) - roasted eggplant, walnuts, peppers, parsley Mezedes (appetizers) * Keftedes ($12) - beef meatballs, tzatziki * Wood-Fired Grilled Octopus ($17) - herbs, lemon Dinner Specials * Flounder ($27) - flounder filet served with roasted cauliflower and carrots Entrees * Moussaka ($19) - eggplant, beef, potato, bechamel souffle Dessert * Manouri Cheesecake ($13) - Graham cracker and sweetened manouri cheese, fruit and honey Everything was delicious. Presentation was beautiful. The Manolada was ice-cold and refreshing. What was neat about this drink was the staff soaked strawberries with rum to make the strawberry-infused rum. Even with the strawberry flavor, added sugar, and ginger beer, this drink wasn't too sweet. I'm a fan of ginger beer and ginger-beer cocktails, and this one hit the spot. My wife recommended the Melitzanosalata because it's one of her favorite apps to order here with her coworkers. We both like eggplant and thought it was tasty. Melitzanosalata is similar to the more common baba ghanoush, but has a slightly different texture and flavor. The melitzanosalata we had here was fresh and relatively chunky. Some melitzanosalata are smoother and creamier, but this was on the chunkier side, which was not a bad thing. Our server Roman recommended the Keftedes. They were yummy. We got four savory, warm meatballs served atop refreshing, cool tzatziki (nice contrast). Also, the meatballs were delectably crispy on the outside. I went to town on those as well as the Wood-Fired Grilled Octopus. I've had a lot of grilled octopus in my lifetime; what stood out most about Kipos' grilled octopus to me was how full of flavor it was. It had appetizing consistency too -- soft, not rubbery. Addictive. My wife loved the Flounder. The filet was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and had great lemony, garlicky, and herbal flavors. It was a satisfying light entree. I liked it, but enjoyed the Moussaka more. My wife thought the opposite. She thought the moussaka was a bit too heavy. Kipos' moussaka reminded me of English shepherd's pie. It was really flavorful and hearty, and served in the same bowl/pot that it was baked in. This was a really filling and gratifying dish. Generous portion size. The Manouri Cheesecake was good. What made this dessert unique was the soft Greek manouri cheese used to make the cheesecake. It gave the cheesecake a distinct funk that I could taste right away. Manouri cheese is made from goat or sheep's milk, so that's where the funk came from. The texture of this cheesecake was much more airy and light compared to traditional "American" cheesecakes. Sometimes I get overwhelmed when live music is playing because it is usually too loud for me. The musician was right behind me, but I was not overwhelmed at all, and enjoyed the background music. The food at Kipos is impeccable. we went with a couple of regulars who swear by their food and they were not wrong at all. I wish I could remember what they ordered - all I know is that one of them always gets the roasted half chicken and swears by it. I had a bite and it was great. I had an amazing time. my short rib with orzo was absolutely delicious and I would love to order it the next time I am in the Chapel Hill area!!! we really enjoyed the bread with the dipping oil as well. To be honest, this dish was a huge miss for me. The pork was dry and flavorless. The potatoes were extremely sour for my taste so they were not easy to eat. It is located in a shopping center and definitely stands out because it is this cute white restaurant in the corner with a planty walkway. The indoor and outdoor was packed- we were thankful we had made reservations. The outdoor seating is so nice and surrounded by so many plants and flowers but we had reserved for inside. There was a musician inside playing beautiful live music and there was a vibrant ambience inside the restaurant. Our server along with other servers were so cool and friendly throughout our whole dining experience and they made our dinner even better and helped us choose menu options. Everything on the menu looks mouthwatering but then they have their weekday special AND another menu of specials. I had my eye on like 8 things I wanted to try so I know i'll be back. We ended up getting the beef meatballs as an appetizer, moussaka, shrimp and scallops plate off the specials menu, and the lamb shank since it was the friday weekday special. Everything was fantastic. The food was so flavorful you felt like you were in a different country eating it or eating someone's mom's food. The moussaka was my absolute favorite dish out of everything and I would probably get it every time I come. The portions are big and the prices are great to me. Been here twice and now. The bread with olive oil and vinaigrette keeps the wait bearable. The moussaka is a favorite however gets a little heavy. Definitely a huge portion and you end up having to bring home leftovers. The lamb falls off the bone--so tender. The grilled octopus is so yummy however is pricey for the portion you get. The music was really loud inside and wish it was a bit softer so conversations can be heard. Lively and beautiful interior and exterior. Great date night place. read more

Everything is great except the portions! The service was probably my favorite part. I thought our waitress was really really funny. The ambiance is good too. It was a Friday and they had someone playing Greek music. Fun! The food was fine but I want more! The portions are the reason I'm only giving 4 stars. It's crazy to me that like $10 gets you just four little potato slices or $12 gets you four keftedes. read more
