I went there for a balayage The result is good, I show them a picture of what I wanted and the result match really well. For the colour + deep treatment + blow dry I spent 127€ which is definitely ok (moreover compare to the prices in Dublin) The only thing, one of the girl taking care of my colour was definitely not delicate at all, hurtes le few times even during the shampoo... I mean, maybe she had a bad day but still, wasn't really nice Except on that, the rest of the crew was really nice offered me tea checking on me often and so on. read more

I happened to be in the city waiting to collect one of our ladies to bring her back home. I had maybe 3/4 hours to spare so thought I would have my hair done. I remember the name House of Colour from way back so decided to check them out. I asked if somebody could colour and style my hair. Not expecting to get an immediate appointment, I was delighted. Was offered drink, even food if I wished to order. That was nice. It was a clean and tidy salon maybe a little dated. Everything was A1 with the exception of the lack of customer/ staff/manager communications. I could have it their way or no way! The auburn colour which I was looking forward to never happened! Apparently the hairdresser told her Manager that what she gave me was in fact what I asked for, mousy brown dark/dull horrible. Not going back there again anytime soon. read more

I went in for a full head of highlights with olaplex and cut. They use heat lamps which I wouldn't recommend with bleaching as it leads to breakage. I got a toner so it wouldn't come out brassy but the opposite happened. Left with white blonde slightly grey highlights. The front is very bad and i cannot tie it up as it looks even worse. The lowlight was also not even skinny sizes overall and there is a chunk of lowlight in one spot. Not worth the money and I will not be returning again. read more

I'm one of those people that hates getting my hair cut, mainly on the principal of the whole awkward chats with the hairdresser while you cringe as they lob of the inch you asked for but strangely looks like 3-4 inches. This place is different. I was shocked. I came out.......with my hair.....dare I say it? The way I wanted! The exact colour AND cut! Now in all fairness my hair is notoriously hard to dye thanks to my lovely mixed heritage I've natural maroon/redish highlights in a very dark brown head of hair. Bleach is often advised. Also I'm in a constant search for a hair brush, there may have been an incident at a hair dresser where she may have found a few leaves and twigs stuck in my hair...... RIGHT well anyway, I arrived earlier than my I was booked but I was greeted with a smile and offered a drink while I waited less than five minutes. I was then introduced with a highly upbeat girl who was to dye my hair. I showed her the "Butterscotch Blond" colour I'd been eying up in their Catwalk Colour Brochure to which she agreed to do and then introduced me to the stylist. The service from then on was excellent as they listened to what I wanted and did seem genuinely interested in the conversation. Most of the conversation circled about the cringe worthy music videos that are played on flat screen TVs beside the mirrors. When the dye was done and the cut complete I was greeted with an open mouthed Sexy Exy ( have a look at the ole blog for his bit) who was amazed that my hair for once looked decent and respectable! Now I'm never one to go for a fancy hair cut or dye job, I enjoy my scruffy student look but they do student discounts AND on certain days you can get a free hair cut. Got a haircut here - they were able to book me in same day (yes!). Upon entering you check your coat in, and they offer you a menu with coffee and tea choices (food if you need it). The stylist sat down next to me and we had a brief discussion on what look I was going for. She explained everything along the way and was very patient with me. They take customer service seriously and excel at it. Not only that, they're really good at what they do; I have really thick hair and people who don't "understand" it end up leaving it like a puffy mushroom. I'm very wary about letting a stylist touch my head since my last official salon visit in Arizona over a year ago. But after reading reviews about House of Colour and walking by this salon numerous times I decided to check out what they had to offer. I was sold when I heard that their students gave free haircuts. I'm sorry to say they no longer offer this, instead they charge 10 euro, but they still advertise them for free on their website and they need to fix that, so I docked a star. Still, by comparison, that's a steal in this city especially for a uni student myself. If you want a student haircut they only do so Mon - Wed from 10am - 4pm. Overall, I was pleased with my experience at HoC and with the student taking care of me. I feel bad I don't remember her name. She really made me feel comfortable and even brought me two complimentary coffees and reading material. She called the instructor over at appropriate times to assess her work and I left with super shiny hair and a great cut. It did take about two hours, which I thought was a bit excessive, but I knew that it was a student job from the start so it's something to expect. I would definitely make another appointment. The students can do amazing things, and if I had more money I'd love to pony up the cash to see what their pro-stylists can do! read more

After much thought, I decided to try a new salon. I booked an appointment here. First of all, they didn't waste anyone's time with that useless patch test (for reals there is no scientific evidence for those). Second I came in, was greeted immediately. They took my coat and gave me a coat check ticket. They have a blow dry bar menu! I talked to my stylist, Nicole and we came up with a plan for a cut and colour as well as a treatment. My hair suffered a severe trauma earlier this summer but looking at it now you'd never know! The colour is gorgeous and the cut is fab! Also- they give you wine! Wine! What else could make your hair appointment so amazing? Everywhere has tea and coffee and granted they do too, but a choice of red, white, or rose? Yes please! I hadn't had a proper haircut in over 5 months and since the budget is currently an issue, I decided to go with House of Colour's student offer. FYI: The website may still say they are free but they now charge €10. I was nervous since I had a bad student haircut experience involving 4 hours and no haircut at the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis last year and had been cutting my own hair ever since. But...€10...seriously. Normal cuts being 5-6 times that amount not including colour. My appointment was 2 weeks out because in this economy, of course these things are booked up. Still, I waited patiently and was pleasantly rewarded. My student stylist's name was Fiona and she was a pro. Well, not literally. ZING! She asked the director a few questions before she started cutting to ensure her plan of attack was right, which made me feel more comfortable, but I wasn't worried. What worried me more than the stylist was the instructor insisting (in front of me) that there was no way I wanted it that short on top. Thank goodness the stylist listened to me rather than her teacher. The instructor also insisted that she put a plaster over my industrial (ear piercing) even though I said it was many years old, wouldn't get hurt if she snagged it, etc. So she relented and put the dumb plaster, which immediately got stuck in my hair and I had to rip it out. Stupid lady. Still felt awesome walking out of there and only dropping a tenner at the counter. read more

I have been going to House of Colour Middle Abbey Street for many years now but had the most upsetting experience yesterday and felt I was treated very badly. I had an appointment yesterday morning for 11.30 for a cut and colour with the stylist I usually see. Today is my is birthday so it was supposed to be treat day as I travel quite a long a way. I am also 28 weeks pregnant. Having had the colour put my hair I was left sitting until after 13.00 with the colour still in. Then i was moved to the sink to be told that there was no hot water. Eventually had colour rinsed out and was left again to sit and wait. 14.00 and still no sign of anybody. I had become cold from sitting with a wet head for hours and was starting to get cramps....not ideal being 6 months pregnant. I decided that it was unfair to expect me to wait any longer and took off my gown and left with still a wet head and no hair cut!! My day absolutely ruined. I am not an unreasonable person and understand that emergencies arise. The point is that I was ignored for all that time with nobody having had the decency or professionalism to tell me what was happening, offer an alternative stylist, to go away and come back or something!!! I am still quite upset about it today because of the way I was treated and the whole day was spoiled. I will not be recommending house of colour in the future and most definitely will never be back!!!!! read more

I went in for a full head of blonde highlights a long time ago. I got toner as well. When i looked in the mirror it was red not blonde when it was dry it had strange black or dark spots all over my hair and it was stripey as well as being reddish there was also LOTS Of banding. I complained but was told to go home and maybe come back. I cried that night and took pictures and sent them to the management they asked me not to put the pictures online in case they got a bad reputation. The girl said she could see the banding (you could see it from space!) And the stripes and black dots. I wouldnt mind but i was already blonde and only needed my roots done. I have never EVER had a worse hairdressing job. They refused a refund at first and told me to let them fix it. Needless to say i GOT MY REFUND ...be VERY careful i left there looking BIZARRE and no one said anything. read more

A little update! Went back here Friday 19th Dec. Service still as good as last time! The place was busy (Friday evening), the whole place was buzzing and staff was very helpful and took time to check in while waiting for my stylist and that was great. I had Shannon again to do a simple hair trim with wash and blowdry. She was really friendly and did exactly what I wanted. The only reason it didnt get 5 stars was because I had to wait 25 mins to get my chair and stylist. I think it was because of the time of day (evening) and it was a Friday. But it would have been nice if I didnt have to wait that long. The girls were still nice and apologized in a friendly manner. Alao got a nice voucher for me and a friend to get a wash and blowdry for 35€ which is great! read more

147 Euro worth of Noes. I had a balayage done for which I paid 147 Eu and I deeply regret the choice of going to House of Colour. The balayage was so badly done that after few weeks only you can see a perfect straight line of hair growth...not exactly what a balayage should be as far as I know. FREE HAIRCUT!!! yes really! Book a cut here with a student and it is totally free! I had Gabby a stunning friendly competent student. She was great! Gave me a lovely head massage whist washing my hair, gave me a fab cut and best blow dry I have ever had plus straightened it with the GHD! And then I paid nothing! I gave her a 5euro tip but that was it! It took an hour and a half for the whole wash cut and blow dry and I was so happy with it! It is a great salon too with free drinks, TV screens and lots of magazines! This is now my new favourite salon in Dublin! read more

I didn't have my hair cut by a professional for three years as the thought of going into a salon was so scary for me. I have really thick hair that most people just don't seem to understand. HoC had been recommended online and by friends, but I was really pleased with how my stylist Max was the one person who coloured, washed and cut my hair and how he immediately set me at ease by explaining how he was going to deal with my hair during the consultation. The colour is great and really natural - he talked me out of mad break-up style hair! I will definitely be back. The relief of being able to walk out of a salon without regrets is amazing! TIP: They prefer a patch test of 48 hours rather than 24 as per their website. read more

Very friendly hairdressers, with an average cost of €48 for a wash, cut and blow dry. My haircut was decent, but my fringe was pretty bad.

My first experience in this place was excellent, I went in for a hair cut and got a really good hairdresser who totally understood what would suit my hair. I was thrilled. I returned again but the girl who did my hair previously wasn't available. The service this time was awful. The girl who was dealing with me was very pushy about trying to get me to colour my hair, I felt embarrassed repeatedly saying no to her after she asked me this about three times. After being there for an hour, all I had done was have my hair washed. When I went up to pay I mentioned this to the person at the til. I then had a chat with the manager who was not entirely apologetic and told me there was nothing she could offer me but a free conditioning treatment the next time I came. In the end I was reluctantly given €10 off the price of my hair cut. I left feeling bad about myself and as if I was being unreasonable. I don't like to pay to be made feel like that so I won't be returning and wouldn't recommend this place. read more

The staff here are genuinely nice, however the building is way past its prime. The toilet downstairs is a real kip, as is the whole downstairs area. I am surprised the staff put up with it. Its not fair to customers but not fair to staff either to ask them to work in such poor surroundings. While my hair was being washed one of the ceiling panels crashed to the ground! Apparently it had happened prevoiusly and was supposd to be fixed. But the cut was good. The colour was not so good, they had no record of what was done before, the person who did it before was sick so I had a new person, she had no idea what colour to put in. I didn't like it, went only to color my gray roots and I did get a RED color instead of a brown one. It is not such a difficult job, just a simple brown color!!! Anyway I rang them to see if I could have had it fixed in 3 weeks, because now I don't want to treat my hair again, I already had a problem of hair loss and that could be too much stress for my hair...but no, they said I could have had it fixed only now! I bought a voucher on citydeal and decided cut my hair on this "proffessional salon". Yes, staff is friendly but I got unprofessional. I have long hair, treatment was awful, hair didn't brush well after. She cut my hair for 15 or 20 minuts. At home i found that my hair not equal cutting close to fase. Would not recommend this salon to anyone thinking of getting an olaplex treatment. Booked a 12:30 appointment for the treatment and was only called an hour before the treatment to be told about the add on blow dry that i have no choice but to do. The blow dry was priced at a ridiculous price of €29. I accepted because clearly i didnt have much choice. Showed up early for my appointment and was looked after right away by one of the staff who hardly spoke to me about what my treatment entailed. She started off my treatment by aggressively brushing my hair to the point it hurt my head (I have long hair that I look after very well). The hair washing was not a pleasant experience either with her dragging her fingers through my wet hair in the sink. She completed the treatment with a blow dry that really was not the best I have ever got. She immediately brought me to the desk to pay which I did. I later realised after rechecking the price list that the treatment was meant to entail an eye mask, head and hand massage which I did not receive. For the price you pay, you'd expect the full treatment but this place couldnt even offer that. read more

Went for a student cut in House of Colour based on the reviews here and it was the worst decision ever! There was virtually no supervision of the student. Someone came over before she started and asked what she was doing, but no one checked on her when she was cutting or colouring my hair and no one asked me whether the colours she used were what I asked for. I got a very basic cut which left me with no shape on my hair and bleached blond hi-lights! I looked ridiculous. I had to put a semi in to cover it all up and now I'm boring brown all over. She also didn't have a clue how to style my hair and no one came to give her any tips. I'll never go to another student class ever. It's just not worth the risk. read more

I really don't like leaving negative reviews, and I've waited a few days until I collected all my thoughts and feelings thinking maybe I overreacted, but that's definitely not the case. I had an appointment for colour change as I was not happy with my Balayage. We did the strand test which showed bleaching the ends would completely destroy my long hair, so I made a tough decision to cut about 10 inches off.. I've had the same cut a few times so I knew what to expect. Unfortunately, my worst fear came true as she cut it along the straight line, without thinning out the bottom. I have a lot of hair which is very thick, so now with the shoulder length hair, the ends stick out and i look like a mushroom! I've already booked someone else to fix the cut, I've been wearing my hair in a bun as I hate it! Unfortunately, that wasn't it. I wanted to lift the balayage so she recommended highlights, which I agreed to. She also recommended a treatment. So after a few hours, she's drying my hair and guess what- highlights are NON EXISTENT! there's absolutely no change of colour. I went through the whole ordeal of damaging my hair even more for it to not even show!! Treatment did nothing either. I think I was in absolute shock to say about anything, I just wanted to run home and cry. Oh and on top of everything it cost me 170 euros! Absolutely ridiculous! I've read a few reviews saying how they're welcoming and care about customers- did not feel any of it. I had my hair coloured here buy a student , The teacher actually applied the highlights to my hair so i guess that's actually worse in my case because I repeatedly said I didn't want blonde highlights something toned down like a light brown only a shade or so lighter than my own colour I even showed them a picture of what I wanted so there would be no confusion. Rang Saturday morning, just chancing they had an appointment for the same day (they did!) & was booked right in. Was just getting a cut, treatment & blowdry, but the stylist was so attentive & really listened to what I wanted, and took into consideration how I style my hair day to day. I hadn't really intended on getting the 'botox' treatment (I think it was called) but I am so glad I did. It was 25euro, and lasts 30 days, but my hair looks SO much healthier (just split ends at the bottom from blow drying which are now gone after the trim & treatment) It was the little things that made it great, like the fab head massage with the shampoo, while washing out the botox treatment out of my hair, I was given a cold eye mask (bit weird since I had makeup on, but nice idea) and the girl massaged cream into both my hands. She knew it was my first time to the salon, so gave me a little bundle with a loyalty card, price list with her name & day off on it, and a 20% voucher off cut & colour because I mentioned I was considering balayage (this was my original plan, but another one of the girls advised me during a consultation on Monday, that I would have to dye my hair brown first, then blonde at the ends, which I wasn't too mad about since my hair is naturally mouse brown, without any colour, and I'd have to get my roots done after that.....the stylist I had today kinda totally disagreed with that and suggested just sandy brown balayage on my hair, but would bring it up to nearly a halo to make it really natural- literally exactly what I was looking for!) So I'll definitely be going back to get my balayage, but today was brilliant - even offered tea/coffee/wine! I am utterly disappointed with my hair cut and colour. This was the first time dying my hair and asked for an ombre colour and instead got streaks of my hair stripped of colour. I had a consultation and patch test the day before and was happy with what was planned however the next day I had a different person and she changed the plan. When I arrived home and had a better look I noticed that my neck and all around my face had been dyed too and had to scrub it all off. I was really excited to get my hair done and coloured for the first time and am so annoyed that I now have what looks like grey/blond streaks in my hair especially because I checked about three times with the stylist to ensure there would be no blond as I have very dark hair. read more

Hmmmm - over-rated. I've been going to the Charlestown Branch for a few years and at first I was really happy with them - the service is undeniably good, lots of tea& biscuits offered and staff are friendly BUT for a salon that calls themselves house of colour, they really don't do colour very well at all. I have dark brown hair that is greying. Each time I visit I STRESS that I don't want my hair to have a red tinge, I just want dark brown like my natural colour with some blonde highlights to break up the dark and blend a little when the grey comes through so I get a little longer out of my colour- however every time it has a red tinge. They have actually tried telling me that this is own natural red coming through - trust me, I do not have ANY natural red in my hair. I've had to stop going as i can only conclude that don't stock any non-red brown colours. Another very annoying point is that the person you make the apt for is not the person who will actually do your hair necessarily. I have booked apt at inconvenient times based on a particular stylist being available, arrived at salon and the stylist in question will do consultation cut but not colour, a junior will do this. They talk the junior thru the process but this is not good enough when paying for and booking apt with senior stylist.. I've had stripey/yellow highlights that have had to be fixed as a result. So, in spite of tea, coffee, awards etc etc I really couldn't give them a good review.It is also expensive - colour and cut costs approx €130. read more
