I've been going to the House of Joy for ages! I am a little sad it is no longer a store/museum dedicated to its whorehouse history. However, the new owners are fantastic people and artists. This shop is incredibly charming and so well-curated! It's beautifully restored old building filled to the brim with goodies! Room after room of fantastic old prints, calendars and signs from all over the world (so risqué back in the day!), various odds and ends, lovely antiques and amazing authentic Russian military memorabilia. Anybody who has ever gone through life being called "weird" or "quirky" will feel at home the minute they walk into House of Joy. House of Joy is a tiny little store in a house which once did business as a brothel. It's cramped, but it's packed with quirky goodness. USSR propaganda? Check. Vintage jazz records? Check. Old, original postcards? Check. Dust? Check. If you love really old things, this place will get you off. I was tempted to rent a semi truck, uproot the place, and move it back to Florida where the closest thing we have is a Goodwill, but I couldn't do that to Jerome, the Most Awesome Town in America. What a weird place. Seriously, this is a must-see store but it's highly unusual. Here you'll find cold war propaganda (from the communist side, no less), old school brothel posters, early 20th Century adult postcards, roaring '20s costumes, Disney antiques, and Russian Harley Davidson shirts occupying the same small, charming floor space. I found a funny Castro refrigerator magnet while I was here but if I were a rich man I'd probably have purchased the German propaganda poster about turning off your lights at night so that the Allies won't bomb your house, or maybe the pig statue draped in Old West prostitution gear. NOT kid-friendly, but so totally whacked out that you'd really be missing out if you didn't pop your head into this place for a few minutes. read more

Right away, I loved to old sign out front. Apparently this place used to be a brothel. It's now a cute antique and oddities shop. It's not very big, but they have interesting things. The woman who was working at the time was very friendly and welcoming. If I was a Sedona local, I'm not sure I would make the trip just for this shop alone... but it's not any single thing in Jerome that makes it special, but all the things put together that makes a nice day trip! And when in Jerome I would certainly make this a must see shop! It's small but cool and full of character. My toddler was starting to act up around the time we hit this place in Jerome, so I couldn't make my stop a long one, but if I had more time I'd love to have spoken more with the woman who ran the shop to learn more about the history of the place. I was so happy to happen upon such a gem. I own a Vintage store in So Cal and instantly fell in love with this shop & the amazing lady who rang me up. World War artifacts/uniforms, pin-up posters, pasties & burlesque dresses, capes... in love! Jerome as a whole was so much fun; nice people & great history. I recommend a 1/2 day visit. read more

Want to find a unique gift? Well, my friend, you are in luck and MUST check this place out. Just as you are about to pass the store, you see this hot mess of clutter that upon second glance you find is filled with amazing finds and then hook, line, and sinker, you are entering the store. One can't help but notice the stench of "old things", but as your eyes focus you will find this small space is packed with everything from vintage posters, pins, magnets, calendars, miscellaneous clothing, hair accessories, and yes, I found nipple pasties. This store is awesome. There are also lots of political and military finds. This store is a must visit when you are in Jerome. read more

It was a bordello. It was a great restaurant. Now it's a cool little retail shop selling all things bordello-related (except the ladies, of course!), great old ads, coins, hats, baubles, artwork and curios. Super fun little shop, completely filled with nostalgia (much of it tongue-in-cheek.) I'll definitely be back in to pick up some of the cards next time I'm in the area. read more

I love this store. It is bursting at the seams with personality. It's a shame they're closing. I always viewed them as a Jerome institution. I love going in and perusing their WWII propaganda prints and other oddities. If you're visiting Jerome in the near future make sure you visit! read more

Cute little shop with lots to look at. I loved all the little things like old checks and bus tickets from the time my grandparents were kids. We weren't greeted by anyone upon arrival and no one told us to have a nice day on the way out, but we cetainly enjoyed looking around at everything. read more

The House of Joy is AWESOME! As the name indicates, this was a brothel back in the day. Today you will find the most weird, eclectic items for sale to adorn your house. From posters and magnets of scantily-clad yesteryear working girls to communist-era Soviet propaganda posters you're bound to find something unique to put on your wall. I picked up an old French Absinthe print (LOVE vintage prints from Europe) for my living room. I want to go back and pick-up one of the Russian Army flasks.....THAT would be cool! The back room of the place has a small selection of adult toys and clothing so the place does live up to it's name as much as the law will allow! read more

Love this weird store! We were staying in Sedona and decided to take a drive to Jerome to get some lunch and explore. This place used to be a brothel and now is a store than sells WW2 memorabilia and oodles of other oddities. There are tons of things to keep your eyes busy in here and definitely a good place to pick your friends up a weird magnet or some pasties. Yes I said PASTIES. I have never seen such a vast selection of boobage ornaments and they are all handmade so what the hell if you need pasties, this is the place to go. After you visit this strange little store hit up The Haunted Hamburger for a delicious burger and great view. read more

Lots of interesting history in this place. I never leave this shop empty handed when visiting Jerome. There's a variety of old memorabilia related to brothels, pin-ups, military, and advertisements. There's also a large selection of prints of old photos and handmade items including greeting cards, magnets, and wall art. I believe they are currently open Thursdays-Sundays. read more

I always make my parents go to Jerome when I visit them in Sedona. I always come to the House of Joy. I love the crusty old owners, love the fact that it was a brothel, and love the oddly steep feeling of vertigo I get in Jerome. House of Joy is filled with cheesecake pin ups, fun, saucy accessories, vintage posters, sexy antiques and random bric a brac. There's a bunch of artsy shops in Jerome. This one is full of gold. Soviet posters, hip flasks, medals, hats, vintage nudie calendars, and "Gay Johnny" fridge magnets (the old meaning of gay I suppose). Another beautiful historical building on the edge of the mountain. read more

The House of Joy was the only 5 Star restaurant in AZ at one time. I lived in Cottonwood from 1974 - 1978 and ate there a couple of times! It was reservation only and sometimes it took weeks to get a reservation. It was only open from Thursday - Sunday (?) and the food was out of this world!! I am delighted that it is still there and I look forward to shopping there the next time I'm in the area!! read more

I love this place. It's small and crooked but i love that it used to be a brothel. My parents used to go there when it was not only a shop but a restaurant. Their friends went there every year for their anniversary, I guess. Cute. I guess the husband and wife (I'm assuming they're married anyway) that own it were the server and cook. The man was kind of a crusty biker dude and made a few meal options a day so you got what there was basically. So awesome. When I went a few months ago there were pasties with a hand written sign saying they were handmade by a grandmother in Iowa. That's the kind of quirky stuff you'll find there. What fun, I always plan a visit to the fabulous fun store where ever I'm in Sedona. You will find unusual treasures from old music posters to Russian tank helmets to fishnet stockings and one of a kind hand made goodies!
